Every time I begin to think I might know a good bit about leather working, I come across someone who just blows me out of the water. This is ( to me) the most fascinating leather dying I have seen. Thank you soooooo much for your video.

Brother I've been watching your craft for years. Even being a leathercrafter myself, your work blows me away. That was the most perfect spot of hide to get the side wrinkles in the dye like you did! Amazing work friend!!!!-Jathan
@RoadAgentLeather Жыл бұрын
Thanks! You're obviously experienced enough to know THAT is the key: Not every piece of the hide will wrinkle like that. It takes careful study to identify which section to use.

Nice video!! 1 suggestion: I learned that when using ox-pho... to blacken hardware before installing it. I blacked the same type of copper rivet on a stock cheek riser I made. I blackened the rivet as an after thought, and when I did that a bit of the blue-ing leeched into the surrounding leather. Now there's a blue-ish stain on the surrounding leather. Its looks a little odd, and not a natural way for the leather to discolor. If its blackened before, then that issue is eliminated. - That's a beautiful holster, as always.

I've done that too. If you watch my previous weathering effects video from 2019 I used Birchwood Casey's Super Blue to corrode a cup of nickel spots.

I definitely like the retention strap on this holster. And not gonna lie, you're definitely more skilled than I am, which makes me wonder, WHY ARE YOU SO BAD WITH RIVETS? I suggest a ball-peen hammer and learning how to peen rivets properly. It might take a couple of minutes longer, especially when compared to the machine rivets you use in other videos, but the results are so much prettier.

It turned out really great 👍 👍👍👍. One question. I know you were showing how to age the leather, and you put charcoal on the stitching. Why not just use gray thread. I'm not questioning your method. I'm just asking
@RoadAgentLeather Жыл бұрын
To me, it just looks a little more natural to add the grim to the thread afterwards. It also adds the effect to the leather immediately adjacent to the stitch line

Awesome video and amazing holster. That said, just found your channel while searching for a leather-working answer. I have a black leather hat that I am trying to age, so it turns to a more grayish hue. Is there a safe way I can accelerate that without ruining the leather?

You do fantastic work! I am going to be making a holster for a friend of mine and try your technique. What machine and what type/size thread are you using? what type oil are you adding to the pot (?) at 08:08? I have the Cowboy 4500
@RoadAgentLeather Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's a Cobra Class 26 running #207 bonded nylon. I use regular sewing machine oil in the thread oiler. I do this pretty much any time I'm sewing through glued leather (which is 90% of the time)
@timuragrba5515 Жыл бұрын
Hello. Excellent work, as always. I wanted to ask you. You did not coat the product with a protective agent. Will paint or antique not stain clothes?
@RoadAgentLeather Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I haven't had that issue with the antique paste. Additionally, the un-dyed liner material is what is coming in contact with the wearer's clothing on the inside surface.
@powderpatchandball424 Жыл бұрын
Do you put a final finish on this holster or just the Neatsfoot oil at 5:00? What thicknesses of leather for holster and liner?
@RoadAgentLeather Жыл бұрын
no finish for this piece. The shell is 7-8 oz veg-tan. The liner 2-3 oz milled veg-tan.

OLD Leather Smith here, you do Beautiful work. I have some suggestions, this I use in my shop so I know they work, a BLUSH BRUSH 4 making it look older, U use a machine and hand stitch why not all hand stitch then it would truly be HAND MADE charcoal works better on copper Rivets. I am guessing it's not 4 quick draw because then you would harden the back leather. Suggestions only. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

I was wondering what oz. Leather do you generally use on your holster projects .
@RoadAgentLeather Жыл бұрын
if it's going to be lined, I use 7-8 oz for the shell. 2-3 oz milled veg-tan for the liner. If not, 9-10 oz.
@notfeedynotlazy Жыл бұрын
It would have looked even better with the lining also being weathered. Looks a bit too new. Maybe covering a mock sixgun in heavy dark grease, holstering it a couple dozen times, then trying to clean it? 😀 (Or more seriously, weathering the lining leather to look old and grease/dirt-stained before sewing).
