I can't believe I'm commenting this on an American show but here goes: For people who say that gun laws won't prevent people from getting guns since they will just find a way to get one illegally, think of it this way: If there are gun laws, unqualified people like the Las Vegas shooter would have harder time getting it. The only people who are going to get it will be people who know how to handle it properly. If your biggest argument against this video is "people might still get guns illegally", you are basically saying, "If we can't solve the whole problem, why solve part of the problem?" or, "Why make small progress when you can't make the _WHOLE_ progress?"

I'm not sure where you're from, however I've studied this subject in-depth over many years. Firstly, many knowledgeable people are seeing past the omissions and lies spouted by the media. For example, at 3:20 he claims there's been 521 mass shootings in 477 days. This is downright propaganda. The source and data used to acquire this number was any shooting that resulted in more than one death. Therefore, a gang shootout in which 2 people died was considered a "mass shooting" in his source. Mother Jones uses a much more reliable assessment of mass shootings. According to Mother Jones a mass shooting is: -A perp who took 4 or more lives -Shooting occurred in a public place Using this data, there's been 49 mass shootings in the U.S. since 2000 and 10 that resulted in 10 or more deaths. There's no evidence to suggest gun laws or bans prevent crime/homicides In the United States and abroad. In some states with high gun ownership/strict gun regulation we see higher homicide rates and in other states with high gun ownership/lax gun regulations, there's very low rates of homicide. That statement can be reversed as well. It should be clarified that this is homicides **overall**, not gun specific homicide, which is data a multitude of media outlets and researchers use and isn't an accurate measure to determine if gun-control works. Take a look at Australia for example. According to the Australian Institute for Criminology (AIC), after the 1996 gun ban, there was a slight increase in overall homicides that held for almost a decade. There was also a massive spike in robberies (going from 85 per 100,000 to 138 per 100,000 in 2001). There were also increased sexual assaults and kidnapping/abductions. Yet, the Australian government often boasts about their reduced gun-homicide rate - while negating the fact that their overall homicide rate slightly increased. In the U.S., Australia, and the U.K., violent crime has been decreasing for the past 20 years. Thus, to pretend gun violence has been on the rise is factually inaccurate. In addition, nearly 70% of U.S. gun deaths are suicides. If you remove suicides from the data, America's rate of death from gun homicide is 4.19 per 100,000. That's reasonably low considering there's a gun in America for every man, woman, and child. Lastly, there is no middle ground for gun-control. How do I know this? Because the media and liberals in America are wanting to ban "assault rifles", despite the fact all rifles (including AR-15s) kill less than 300 people per year. Yet, pistols account for 80% of gun homicides (they are also used in more than half of mass shootings). So I ask you, why aren't they asking for a pistol ban? Spoiler Alert: they eventually will. The point is, it's a slippery slope. Once one ban of a firearm type is in place, it will push the spotlight onto another, and another, until the consensus is that ALL guns are bad and should be illegal. In conclusion, there's no evidence to suggests banning guns equals lower crime/homicide. Guns don't kill people, people kill people (look at the terrorism occurring in Europe with terrorist using vehicles as their weapon of choice), and America's 2nd Amendment is there for a reason. It specifically states "shall **NOT INFRINGE**". Otherwise, we'll turn into a country like we're seeing in Europe where the police are arresting people for posting "hate speech" on Facebook.

Some criminals will get guns legally. But lets not pretend that every criminal with a gun rn has access black market gun distributors that are selling guns from across the border. Yes they may own guns illegally, but im pretty sure that those guns are usually stolen from former legal owners (you can fact check me on this i dont actually know) because its easier to steal a gun from a legal owner than it is to get a gun across the border of the country.

You are a weird country. Gun control basicly means you have your guns for hunting and to get them, you must prove you are sane . If you need machinegun to shoot a deer, you are a bad hunter. Fyi, 2016 in Finland the whole policeforce shot 6 bullets on missions. Maybe you should take notes in that too.
@rob_42277 жыл бұрын
Elli Sillanpää my country has a weird kink with guns. It's a grassroots industry that helped build the country and it's so entrenched and its supporters are so brainwashed and politicians are so bought and paid for it's nuttier than the masturbating bear on Conan O'Brien. We keep trying to rock that boulder down the hill, but I think it might take more than even this Vegas shooting to do it. However one of the three grassroots, tobacco actually has been neutered by the government in this country and although Big Tobacco exists, it is a shadow of what it once was. Cigarettes are $10 a pack, smoking rates in America are down 50% from 1965s, and T companies are paying for all the anti-tobacco ads that get advertised everywhere. I think that will eventually happen for the gun lobbies, gun manufacturers, and the NRA, but I don't think it'll happen very soon.

Asbolutely brilliant satire! And kudos to you for managing to speak about a tragedy with humor, while still absolutely nailing the serious issues underneath. Even if we disagree on how we manage our guns, the debate has to happen. I don't think gun ownership is bad in itself, but is it asking too much for competency tests to show that you know how to use it properly and understand just how powerful and potentially destructive it can be? How about allowing for background checks at gun shows? You could make a purchase at the show, and it would be delivered/shipped to you after the nation-wide background check came back clear. Yes, people who really want illegal guns could get them; but at least it would take a bit more effort and planning.

I am so glad that a person's right to own a piece of property is more important than a person's right to life, liberty, and their pursuit of happiness because that's the way it's written in the Constitution the right to own a gun is way before those other silly things like all men are created equal or freedom of speech or the right to live.

Annabelle B. I agree., I'm not black. But I can understand the Black Lives Matter intellectually. I will never be able to truly FEEL racism because it doesn't happen to me. Jesse Waters can't even understand the issue intellectually. Jesse pontificating on the subject is ludicrous. My students are hearing opinions like Jesse's every day as their parents watch FOX or as they are on gaming forums. They are 10 years old. One of my students joked about going to a Black Lives Matter rally wearing a white lives matter T shirt. He's not a racist. He is just an 11 year old trying to be funny and push buttons. I took him to task over it. I asked him if he would joke about it if his family lived with the real threat of being killed at any given traffic stop. After the serious conversation, he now understands the issue intellectually. He is now aware to the extent a kid can be. However he can never truly FEEL it. He's white. On the other hand, the right wing lacks basic empathy. If we can somehow get white people of the U.S. to feel empathy -to put themselves in the shoes of the oppressed, the world may be able to move past this. All I know is that humans always seem to do the right thing last. This trait is going to be at the root of our downfall as a species. And other species besides. Humanity as a whole doesn't have any idea what they are doing. It's heartbreaking.

My stance is this: Gun control should be secondary to addressing the mental health pandemic our world faces. A firearm is a tool, admittedly a dangerous tool even with proper safety precautions, but a tool nonetheless. The mass shootings discussed in this video reflect a greater crisis. Why are so many individuals finding themselves in a mental and emotional state where violence seems to be their only recourse? Even if access to firearms is restricted from these individuals we are still left with the problem of their instability. I am not arguing for or against gun control. That is a discussion which needs to be had. But before we focus on addressing a symptom perhaps we should identify the root cause? The numbers of untreated mental health problems in the United States alone is staggering. This is a problem which spans the globe. By ignoring the greater problem we leave these individuals feeling there is no help, no hope, and no other recourse than violence. Gun laws do not solve the problem, they only make it less visible. Note: I am neither Republican nor Democrat, neither Liberal nor Conservative. I neither own nor desire to own any firearms.
