I enjoy my Steam Deck so much, I forgot my iPhone SE 2022 earlier today at home and I need it for work. Obviously, I went back home to get my iPhone as I’m typing this comment from it. I’ve never been so attached to a gaming device since maybe my PSP or PS1? Steam Deck has literally been my DAILY driver that I use it even more than my daily driver smartphone at times. Now what if I finally beat FF7 Remake? Would I play the Steam Deck as frequently again? Maybe not. Maybe I’m only using it so much now because I finally got to play Shenmue III and FF7 Remake that I never got a chance to play them on my PS4 nearly a half decade ago. But I believe I will continue to game on the Deck long after I beat FF7R. And if I’m bored with gaming, it can still be used for KZbin and Netflix. It can still act like a laptop. I use my Deck so much, my brand new Switch Lite which I got two weeks prior to my Deck has been collecting dust. I might play the occasional Mario Kart 8 Deluxe race but that’s it. Same with my modded Vita, modded PSP, and all my Android smartphones. I recently charged all my Android smartphones because all their batteries had died thanks to only being on standby mode while never being used. I do wonder what the next Steam Deck will be? Valve makes a Deck to serve as a baseline for all PC handhelds. The next Deck doesn’t need to be super powerful. With indies being more fun and being released more frequently than AAA titles, what’s the point having all that power? I wouldn’t be surprised if the Deck 2 is only on par to the base PS5. Even slightly lower teraflops than the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme. Powerful performance is great to have but not if it means sacrificing power efficiency. No point owning a handheld that only offers an hour of battery life. And AAA titles seems to be dying out. Too risky to spend all that money while taking 4-5 years to make it. I look at current indies like 16-bit/32-bit gen games but with more modern graphics. Fun and highly replayable. More playing, less watching. Steam Deck changed the game. It wasn’t the first PC handheld. We had many PC handhelds during the mid 2010s. But Steam Deck is responsible for making PC handhelds becoming more mainstream thanks to the far more affordable price and Valve’s already established ecosystem and fanbase that supports other users. It’s like what iPhone and Android did for smartphones. Changed the industry forever. Prior to the Deck, you were paying $1200+ for a PC handheld. There’s no ROG Ally and Legion Go without the Steam Deck. And Valve seems to love their fans unlike a company based in Kyoto, Japan.

As the father of two young kids, I've loved my Steam Deck. I play it handheld when I take my eldest son to karate every week and use it as my main gaming device, docked. I have a dock in the living room and another in the sun room so I can seamlessly move between depending on whether I can get access to the living room 😂. I was never getting away with having an enormous console / desktop sitting around and it doesn't offer the flexibility I need. It's a great setup, but the main issue is wanting more horsepower. Many games run really well but recently I've been playing loads of Hell Divers 2 and I've had to turn the graphics relatively low to get good frame rates. As strange as it sounds, if the deck had another connector I'd genuinely have bought a powerful eGPU to boost it when docked. Something I can pack away when not in use so the area is clear for the family. The Neo is interesting because of the extra base performance. I think I'll make sure my next device can support an eGPU. I know it's not optimised and can be throttled by CPU / bandwidth etc, but I just need flexibility / portability and something to boost performance when playing more demanding games docked, on the glorious big screen.
@MrAlanMacdonald6 ай бұрын
I should add, I thought combining steam deck as a handheld with GeForce Now Ultimate or priority when docked was the answer, but lots of games including Hell Divers 2 aren't available on that platform. Which is a shame as it would be a great setup and not need an eGPU or upgrading to a newer handheld as often.

For example I I have downloaded images for their own SBC's from them that just simply didn't work. Some of the images that did work the OS's were cobbled together and even the term "worked" was questionable. I am not trying to spin doubt but am being hopeful that they have learned from these mistakes. Maybe it's best to have any software outsourced or better yet design the device to be compatible with off the shelf software because like I said above, their hardware is fine. I think 2 of my garage automation modules are original orange pi lite? They gotta be 6 or 8 years old by now and run 24/7 in a plastic case I have't cleaned once. Probably should do that lol.

Most of these are allegedly not "unknowns" with a little reading into their site/q&a/wiki/etc. As far as games being "optimized", that's on the developer + how well it works on Proton(handled by Valve), neither of which have to do directly with the hardware unless there is a game specific feature that makes use of it. At best, Manjaro may have system adjustment options built in the OS in the same vein that Valve does with Steam OS if specific games need to be tweaked for specific performance settings.

@@allenfrisch The Claw was an edge case of multiple isolated issues that stemmed from its design choices that was never meant to mix n match well for its price point. Going with Intel's current CPU offering was never going to work out as efficiently this generation when compared to its competition that makes it not worth the price to efficiency. AYANEO makes it very apparent that their introductory prices are a part of their early campaigns and something they've done with most of their products to my knowledge. I doubt this is a case of a bait n switch if the info is there in plain sight. The Orange Pi handheld in this case has not made mention of any early bird campaigns like the other guys and have already announced their pricing along with an estimated quarter release not too far from now if that's anything to go by. $499 is like £(398) cheaper than the steam deck oled and close to the og steam deck price. I knew valve and ASUs was making a profit but man. Technology can be so cheap.

I think the OS is promising especially to put in in my Ally

I don't understand why these companies don't just use SteamOS... We all are going to use Steam anyway and it would only improve compatibility if they just ship with it.

I can't get over how uncomfortable it looks compared to the SteamDeck, but $500 is dirt cheat for a handheld with a 7840U. Also, I just am not a fan of conductive pads, they just feel worse than dome switches latency-wise.

Man, that price makes this a Steam Deck Killer!

When SteamDeck Oled exists, 500$(before reseller's price gauding!) is not competitive at all

Bro, you're camparing ? zen2 apu to zen 4 apus 😂. It's not competitive, you say? It's day and night difference

@@sayyedhaseebfr lmao I was just about to say the thing lol. steam deck is so underpowered with today's standards and while its still really good, if we talk about in the Performance area? *NAH* even the ps4 Still beats it in some games at certain wattages. I think this guy doesnt know what he is talking about z1 extreme is way more powerful than steam deck and this chip is basically the same performance as that or better 😂

Even a kid knows the generational improvements between zen l2 and zen4 you genius! I am pointing out the fact that there has NOT been generational leap forward in practice!

Not competitive at all? Let's talk about benchmarks the Z1 extreme is 50% more powerful than steam deck and this chip in this device (8840U) is like 14% more faster than z1 extreme. if thats not competitive idk what is its clear you just are super biased for valve and thinks your outrageous opinion as fact when facts don't care bout your feelings

Okay but this might actually finally be a steam deck rival price-wise

I wonder if this handheld will be or good quality, I hope it doesn't break easily being this cheap maybe they're cutting expenses in important parts

I would rather handheld start adding more that 16gb for the base model. At least up to 20/24gb of ram. Games are starting to become ram hungry.

Still too way high priced… the other handheld that do the same thing or too high to. It’s a select market of people that want that.

Okay so I was thinking way ahead of myself I was thinking that man 16 GB of RAM there's a lot of handhelds out there right now for 16 GB of RAM so that sucks but then I checked out their website and they saying that they're having two different types 16 gigs of RAM and 32 gigs of RAM option so if that 599 is that 32 gigs of RAM I'll get that shit in a heartbeat because it has a 2280 SSD also which that is awesome 👏👏👏👏 and it's not going to be one of those Indigo Girls that they be pulling up it might end up being sold in stores so that's awesome that's another Plus

Sadly Orange Pi make some nice hardware, but their software 'stuff' tends to fall down pretty badly. I will be holding breath on this because honestly I am expecting more of the same. A nice bit of hardware, but a seriously flawed software suite. :/
