This brings back memories of when I first heard this tune! I sat bolt upright as soon as I heard the Reich/Metheny sample, since I’d bought the Different Trains/Electric Counterpoint album a couple of years before that and listened to it a lot, and I couldn’t believe someone was sampling a minimalist composer rather than the usual James Brown grooves. This track is such a wonderful combination of unexpected samples and burbling synths, and it’s great to see a breakdown like this.
@bleepsandboops Жыл бұрын
It's a brilliant combination! I was in two minds to play the Reich/Metheny piece from scratch rather than sampling it (I did EC 1 ages ago over on my other channel - kzbin.info/www/bejne/inTElaZpg9R4ntE) but figured that would be a step too far for people expecting bleeps and boops!... 😂

Amazing work - I heard they used a sample of jump into the fire by Harry Nilsson - probably the extended drum solo at the end of the track.

Thanks! Yep, Harry's in there - my guess is they used a noise gate to get rid of the reverby sound on the original record, so it was less obvious which track was sampled?

Oh damn posted hours ago! This is amazing and I doubt I could do it justice even with a DAW etc. I thought it was confirmed not Levar Burton in the booklet from the re-release of The Orb's Adventures? (maybe I'm not recalling that well, I only borrowed it from a friend) Alex even said it was him, but to me it's never sounded like him, growing up with Reading Rainbow and TNG later. But then again in those shows he's sort of acting/presenting and then completely acting. It's hard to imagine his voice raising in that way and sounding so thin and missing this kind of passion he always has in his voice. I remember this huge argument over it on a mailing list in the 90s! I guess it doesn't matter and probably Alex knows especially because of the legal stuff. I just can't believe it's him! I'd love it to be him though.
@bleepsandboops Жыл бұрын
As a big TNG fan, I'd really wish it to be Levar Burton, especially with Michael Dorn popping up on the Orbital albums too... It's one of those things where if you read enough corners of the internet, you can probably convince yourself one way or the other... especially if the same interviews are recycled and republished over the years 😂 I wonder if anyone has ever reached out to him (Levar) or his agent to confirm?
