I remember playing this game back in elementary school. The randomness makes it difficult to get a high score, but I did barely survive as a farmer.

The easiest way to get the high score is to deal drugs in the outposts. No one knows this strategy, for some reason.

A game that needs no introduction - Especially given the many fan games that play similarly to this or even the Switch remake. I first discovered this game through "Steam Train" on Game Grumps back in 2019. It later prompted me to play the DOS version. I was surprised that despite how primitive it is, it still manages to be a fun educational game. The randomization makes each playthrough really intense as literally *_anything_* can go horribly wrong if your oxen so much as take a single step; Getting mumps or dysentery, a thief can steal your clothes or your wagon could inexplicably catch on fire. A clever way to represent the dangerous trek to the Willamette Valley in the form of a video game. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

damn now this brings me back. I remember still a computer lab time in early elementary school where we go to choose floppy disks and then play them on an apple 2e. The goal was always to choose your disk fast enough so you could go get one of the color Apple 2Es instead of the monochrome ones. Fuck i'm getting old.

I remember playing The Oregon Trail back on a computer at the Children’s Museum when I was young. By the way, I grew up with several classic educational computer games such as Putt-Putt Travels Through Time, Spy Fox In Dry Cereal, School House Rock!: Grammar Rock!, Winnie The Pooh Activity Center, and Living Books: Arthur’s Computer Adventure. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! 💻

the version i remember playing most growing up. We had this in the computer lab. There's also another game I played around the time that I could never figure out the name of...you played as robots and it had to do with math, I think. You would race from the top screen to the bottom.

Personally, I saw more horror elements in this franchise than even most true horror series. You never knew when disaster could strike, either in the form of the dreaded cholera (for the record, dysentery's overrated) or a rattler bite killing a party member suddenly. It was that tension of not knowing what was around the corner, if there was even anything around the corner, that would drive any wannabe pioneer like me insane.
@spingleboygle Жыл бұрын
i’m imagining a game like this but your party slowly gets more and more insane to the point where they escape with soup-on-the-side and the hunting minigame gets infested with horrifying eldritch creatures

In college once a semester I would gather the roommates bust out Oregon Trail on our living room TV, put everyone’s name into the wagon party and cross the trail together. Always super fun getting the guys together yelling at the screen as they would be bitten by a snake or we’d go hunting. Also this is by far the superior version of hunting. The newer versions of Oregon Trail that are mouse based point and click hunting is lame IMO.
