Carnage is the coolest symbiote. There's nothing more badass than taking someone with the mindset of the Joker and giving them Spider-Man's powers. But Spider-Man is my favorite hero so pretty much any symbiote or Spider character is going to be awesome.

Mark Bagley's era behind the pencil in the Spider Man title was the best of the franchise's run imo.

I loved his art during this era, both in Amazing Spider-Man and New Warriors. Whenever I've seen his subsequent iterations of Spider-Man, I've been really disappointed. He should have stuck to what he was originally doing. Very few people could have followed Larsen and McFarlane, but at that time, Mark Bagley was the man.

Carnage is probably so popular because hes probably the most Evil Marvel villain of them all, most of the Villains have a sad backstory and make you feel a bit Sympathetic like Magneto and The Brotherhood, Loki, Venom, Doc Ock, Green Goblin etc. Carnage however is evil from the outset cos he is a Serial Killer before the Symbiote bonds with him, an insane serial killer who shows no remorse, doesnt have a tragic backstory as of yet, and kills purely for his own entertainment, hes also very like The Joker who is argusbly the most popular Villain ever and in my opinion and many others the best, add in that hes extremely brutal for a Marvel Character like D.C. and Dark Jorse levels of violence and he looks awesome so all that is probably why hes so popular

That's what makes Maximum Carnage so great! Carnage gathered a family similar to Charles Manson. They were not a gang, they were his followers. And what he does to New York was a beyond The Avengers level threat. The Avenger, The X Men and The Fantastic four were called in. Carnage at that stage was an Omega level threat. Not from his powers, but from his philosophy.

I remember owning the original collection of the Carnage comic and reading the writer's take on the story, he had mentioned at the time that they wanted to kill Venom off because they felt bored but like Rob mentioned Venom was too popular. however they suggested ideas like the suit (venom) going to other hosts like the Lizard, Doc Ock, Flash Thompson and even JJ Jameson! interesting how Marvel a decade later decided to use some of those ideas (Like giving the suit to Flash)

Great vid Rob. i was totaly into this story line, when i was a kid. I still have all Venom and Carnage Comics back from those days. Eddie was the real deal, it's sad what they did to him, all that Antivenom, Agent Venom BS and so on... He (Eddie/Venom) is still one of my favorite heroes in Marvel! Yes, i see him as a hero, because beside the fact he wants to kill Spidey in the early days, he is only up for good. Maybe his methodes are a little bit rough, but oh well i like Ghostrider, Punisher too and they are heroes with a comon sense of Judgment ^^ So thank you again Rob for this video, it brought back so many good memories. ( I voted for a round up of the Maximum Carnage storyline too, it's a master piece ^^)

Man, this was my heyday of comic nerddom. I remember the issues leading up to Carnage in Amazing Spider-Man they showed the iconic #361 Bagley cover without the logo in the letters page (i think they did that cuz they had so much confidence in the story) me and my dad were like "whoa". I still have the issue where Cletus Kassady got infected in the issue where Spidey fought Cardiac. Great era for comics (Peter David's Hulk, Carnage and Venom, Infinity series, etc.) before they completely crapped the bed with the clone saga.

I had a second major in philosophy as an undergraduate. The best course of study and the critical thinking/logic courses I use to an extent every day. This is why videos, such as the one of "Integrity," are valuable additions to the videos made. This channel is truly excellent.

I love the lecture format but integrate it with the music. I do agree the new format has improved and I like how free flowing the videos have gotten. I would love to see do some stuff like you did with your book about comic trends or history or where you feel it should go

The first time I saw Carnage was in one of the old Spider Man games on the Playstation. Oh man was that scary for a kid. It was one of those chase stages where you just couldn't fight back and all you could do was run for your life. Probably my favorite version of “Venom” is the 90’s cartoon iteration. They built up the character of Eddie Brock and his hatred of Spidey long before the symbiote was introduced, so that when Venom showed up it made sense. Plus seeing Venom’s clear glee and humurous banter when he fought Spider-Man was such a delicious bit of entertainment.

I was personally really disappointed with Maximum Carnage. It felt like I was reading the same two issues over and over again. Thematically, I love it, but it was poorly executed and went on for far too long with how repetitive the story was. Carnage is still cool at the end of the day.

If Marvel ever goes into direct to DVD animated movies like DC I hope they make Maximum Carnage, or this story. But shortens it a lot. I agree after 4-5 times of 4 vs 6 and then the fake defeats of Carnage you just want it to end. Doc Ock, Venom and Kingpin are the only Spider-Man characters I was ever interested in, never Spider-Man himself. I grew up reading the X-Men, so in comparison to the Mutants he was (relatively) weak power-wise and too whiny.

pious83 I agree with you to an extent. I also, personally was always a big X-Men fan. it always struck the right cord with me. I think a BIG part of it was the actual 'Mutant' gen. In the x universe the individual powers came as a result of a type of 'evolution' which FASCINATED ME. The fact the, somewhat similar to the FF, Spidey got his powers from an outside source.

Wodinn Aside from the Punisher and the Hulk, no Earth based hero aside from the Mutants has ever appealed to me. As you say the lore and biology behind Mutants is so interesting. Other than them I tend to gravitate towards the Cosmic Marvel landscape via the Eternals, Deviants, Many Angled Ones IE The high concept stuff. The "men in tights fighting bad guys" I find quite silly and somewhat childish.

I got that series when it came out (yeah, I'm old). I remember when Carnage was making this "no rules" monologue at a concert one guy agreed and attacked a teen. Spider-man stopped it. In the next story with robot Spider Slayers Spider-man is saved by a construction worker. It turned out he was that teen's Dad and he felt he owed Spider-man for saving his son. It was a great moment..
