Here is my headcannon: It was a normal day in the carnival and clowny just finished passing out balloons to the children Suddenly, the clown noticed a vegetable in a top hat leave a slice of cake on a bench and leaves rather in a hurry. After the show clowny realizes the cake is still there and he decides to throw it away but he was quite hungry and thought a bite couldn't hurt. So he took a bite of the cake and a little piece gets stuck on his throat, this doesn't seem to bother him. He suddenly hears distant screaming of extreme pain and runs over to see what's going on, he takes a glimpse and spots a fox sitting on the floor gagging in pain so he decides to try and help out. But when he got close enough the fox suddenly takes a swing at clowny with a knife, Clowny quickly armed himself with a hammer to fight back but suddenly he feels a disturbing pain in his throat and chest so bad he couldn't inflict any damage. Clowny remembers the cake from earlier being the only thing he had consumed the entire day he realizes it might have had the infection on it. Everything starts going dark and in extreme pain, clowny runs away to the cages with the fox chasing him and tricks him by running into the cage and crawling out by the tiny exit knowing on the news that the infected couldn't crawl he locks the fox up before collapsing to the floor and giving in to the infection.

How clowny got infected: the infected attacked him basically, the wolf was probably surrounded also mr p is innocent its just that people portrait him without knowing being attacked by infected infects you. BTW apparently to lore clowny is a wolf that entertains as a clown and it also shows why the clowny hair is in a ears shape.
