Idk if you guys have realized yet, quirks aren't simply superpowers. They are an inherent part of the wielder's biology which means they manifest in ways beyond the physical. One of these ways is in personality & temperament. This factor is a big issue in the MHA universe hence the motive behind the Meta Liberation Army who wanted to eradicate all social norms/contracts which limited the full usage/expression of someone's quirk. Toga has a vampiric quirk which compels her to feed on living organisms. Bakugo has an explosion quirk which also contributes to his fiery/explosive temperament. Shiggy's decay quirk is also why he has an overwhelming compulsion to destroy. These character traits are in actuality, genetic expressions of their quirk w/ very little to do w/ any external influence such as environment or childhood experiences.

I think the itching is a stress reaction of the boy. We said in the last episode that the itching only happened at home, and it became worse and worse the more he is under stress. Basically, for the itching to stop, Tenko would have needed some psychological therapy to deal with his issues that came from his abusive father and to deal with his stress in a better way.

Shigaraki’s character makes a lot more sense if you see him less as AFO’s protégé and more as another one of AFO’s victims. Even with his power, he wouldn’t necessarily have grown into the socially stunted, warped individual that he’s become all on his own. AFO basically raised him in such a way as to ensure he could never heal from his trauma and reintegrate into society.

Love how white shiggy's hair is now, how much he's matured after this arc, even the dub went the extra mile and deepened his voice for effect, menacing as hell.

Yeah both the Japanese and English VOs worked with the stylisation of the manga, where Shiggy's speech bubbles pre MVA were all jagged and chaotic, but afterwards lost that scratchy, messy pattern and matured into a deeper, bolder outline. :D

The itch could be quirk related. But I also think it's fair to say he starts to itch whenever he's uncomfortable/stressed out. Because he actually makes a comment in this episode, "If anyone had reached their hand out...I wonder if the itch would've stopped." Which is basically implying that he thinks if anyone besides AFO had come to help him, he might've been able to stop the itch. Because AFO doesn't help him when he's in pain or stressed. He doesn't help him get through that. He just tells him that he shouldn't feel that way. And to basically be the worst person possible. That voice whispered in his ear for 15 years or so. Which is probably why Shigaraki makes video game references and seems pretty childish at the beginning of the story. He literally didn't have the chance to grow up. But now he's taken his first steps to becoming his own person. He's got power, he's got influence, but most of all, he's got drip.

@@celinho68 Wouldn't it be fair to say that him having a quirk like Decay straight up manifests as a subconscious urge to destroy, hence the itch? I really don't think a quirk as powerful and destructive as that would have no effect on a person.

I read that the author or MHA is actually a huge fan of horror, but he tries very hard to keep the tone of the story light and happy. I personally think it's a good call, but I feel like some viewers (like you guys) would enjoy it if he just went full darkness.

You guys are asking about the itch, it’s been hinted at everytime he itches as a sign to show he always wanted to destroy, since his debut in season 1. The concept is like what the liberation member toga fought was saying. Because togas quirk was blood related she grew up and realized her quirk and became fascinated by blood which is why she’s attracted to people bleeding like hero killer, deku, uraraka one way or another. But same way with shigaraki, his power is to destroy so any behavior or characteristics that come of it are a product of nature u feel me. But that’s what the meta liberation army fight for, so people can be accepted regardless of what may come of they God given features, including powers. That’s why I like my hero academia because they started with the league just wanting to destroy, to the hero killer questioning morality among heroes, to the league strategically attacking the hierarchy of the hero centric society to make a point about their opposition, to the yakuza wanting to make things normal again with the illegal underground being the beginning of everything, to the Meta liberation army trying to subtly get what they want which is ultimate freedom because you were born like this, u have the birthright to express yourself freely rather than take certain paths because of your power. Like the layers when pulled back represent the real world but it’s more apparent than how it’s conveyed in real life

At first his itch was just a form of "anxiety", always was, but afo took the opportunity to gaslight the whole concept of it to a straight up desire to destroy to direct his hatred just for the sake of his own benefits, otherwise he wouldn't have wondered if the itch would've stopped if someone reached out to him, so its clearly not a simple bloodthirst at all. And yes his quirk definitely influenced his psyche in a bad way just like toga, nighteye, twice etc

@@leeleelee7878 like it sucks cuz I think some people said that his upbringing also affected how his quirk manifested kinda like eri quirk, like when he said I hate you all and started crumbling the dog if he wasn’t in a place of so much sadness and hatred and betrayal, his quirk might have been more like chisakis like a less villainous way of destroying things. Cuz the other thing about afo, which is why I fw him, he speaks very directly. Like yea that’s a great way to manipulate people lowkey, doflamingo and arlong did that in one piece but even then, to speak directly it’s like ur using dictionary words. He’s absolutely right, morals and ethics were created by people. If something is making you uncomfortable you have every right to do something about it. And you just see shigaraki suffering from the itch. Sure a hero wouldn’t have led him astray like that but a hero didn’t even show up that’s the saddest part. And nobody knows either

im not sure what comes first when it comes to behaviors and quirks, What came first, toga's bloodlust or her quirk? Was her bloodlust a side effect of her quirk, or did her quirk developed according to her bloodlust? same here with shiggy, was his desire to destroy that came first or the quirk?, was his desire to destroy a side effect of his quirk or was his desire to destroy what developed his quirk?

A really important part of this arc for me is what AFO says the purpose of the hands is. They're to make him remember that feeling of helplessness he had as as kid, to keep that "itch" in the front of his mind at all times. Tenko Shimura had a bad childhood, as a lot of people did, & the manifestation of his power gave him no chance at a normal life. However, if someone else had found him, if he'd been picked up by a hero, he could have maybe found a way to move beyond that trauma. AFO did the opposite, he wanted him to focus all his energy on the pain and frustration of existence, and taught him that death and destruction is the only way to release it. Thus, Tomura Shigaraki was born.

I mean itches can be dealt with with medicine, as someone who's had lifelong allergies of DIRT and lives in a city 😂 but seriously, I think even if he felt violent urges, with proper counseling Tenko could have been heroic or just plain good. He clearly had a sense of justice when he played with kids nobody else would play with, and wanted to be a hero. Itching is a stress reaction and he could have dealt with it when taken away from stress, but AFO basically made him wear his trauma his entire life. Lots of people have moments where they feel anger or even want to hurt someone but choose not to, because we as human beings are able to rise above our immediate urges when needed. Like someone with anger management problems, he could have done okay if someone with his best interests found him first.
