Many thanks for this Jacob, you are excellent as always. Likewise Charles is extremely knowledgeable, but if I may please point out a couple of minor mistakes: 1. John the Baptist is most definitely in our canonical prayer book. He is mentioned as King (angel) Yihya Yohana towards the end of our Asiet Malka prayer. This prayer is recited 3 times daily. 2. Buckley’s research into the colophons of the Ginza showed that the earliest Mandaean scribe was a female priest by the name of Shlama beth Qidra, who was active around 200CE. Keep up your great work!

I think it is conceivable that the first chapter of the Gospel of John was copied from an ancient text that spoke of John as the true messiah awaited and sent by God, then made to disappear. The use of words that the author of the Gospel of John uses in verse 20 of the first chapter is ridiculous :... "Who are you?". 20 He confessed and did not deny, and confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

Mithraism originated in Persia and was syncretised into a Roman cult. Mithraism was distinct from Zoroastrian religion which was the state religion of various Persian empires until the conquest of Islam.
