Trog (1970) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #Trog
Joan Crawford stars as an anthropologist who discovers a living missing link to man's animal past. Deep within a hidden cave, Dr. Brockton (Crawford) discovers a terrifying hairy figure with red-rimmed eyes--a living troglodyte. Dr. Brockton takes this living specimen of humanity's cave-man ancestors back to her laboratory, where she believes she can teach the proto-human to learn and to communicate. Instead, the creature breaks free and goes on a terrifying, murderous rampage.
Directed By Freddie Francis
Starring Joan Crawford, Michael Gough, Bernard Kay

Joan did look wonderful in this. Her face was still striking. She had so much more to give acting wise and it's sad this was her last motion picture. I'm sure she was always hoping for another return to glory.

Well, it was reported that she used tapes to achieve a temporary lift on her face for this film. Tapes were also occasionally used by other stars of a certain age at that time, including Marlene Dietrich and Bette Davis. It made them look younger and feel more confident.

EverythingClassic yes! I know Lucille Ball used them heavily. At least it gave them another alternative to surgery. Joan still looked like Joan and not like some alien 👽 like some of today's celebs. By the time Lucy's last series Life with Lucy her eyebrows were in the middle of her forehead!

Going to television didn't hold the same prestige as it does today. With such grand production values nowadays a big movie star can appear on television show and not lose any status. Back in Joan's days though, going to television was seen as a huge step backward and often beneath them. It wasn't unusual for big stars to make television appearances from time to time, but recurring characters not so much. It's the same reason Jayne Mansfield turned down the role of Ginger on Gilligan's Island, which is a shame because instead she did cheap tavern/dive bar shows which is what ultimately led to her death when the show became extremely successful.

Joan Crawford actually did a soap for a short while and it was kind of absurd too. Her daughter Christina was a regular on a soap, I forget the name of it and Christina got fairly sick and was going to be out of commission for a while so they were going to drop her character.....but Joan Crawford suggested that she fill in for Christina and play her character on the soap until Christina got better which she did. It was kind of absurd though since Joan Crawford was like 30 years older than her daughter.

Joan shouldnt have been embarrassed by this film. It's easy to be good with a good script. It's the actors who acquit themselves despite the terrible material (e.g Billy Zane) that have my admiration. She's still not phoning it in & giving a hella performance. Watching Ben Kingsley not give a shit in so many films is way more frustrating.

An actress of Joan Crawford's stature must have known by this point how far her movie career had fallen when all she was being offered were leading roles in low budget English horror films. Older actresses today now enjoy the chance of doing quality projects. Pity that option wasn't there for Crawford. Still like the professional she was, Crawford commits to the part even if the production is well beneath her.......

She was still so striking. If I'd seen her on the street, I'd have recognized her instantly, but if she was just a regular woman, I'd likely have to stare in admiration at just how she appeared and carried herself. It's more than just her physical features, which alone are wonderful, but just her whole demeanor. How she'd move her eyes. It was like all those years in the silent films still translated through, finding expression in more than just words.

Joan said this was her greatest and most demanding performance. Originally she was to play Trog, but she felt she was being typecast. So the roles were reversed even though it meant she had to shave daily before filming. She also said the biggest disappointed of her career was that the follow up Trog 2 'the musical" never got commissioned because Bette Davis bought the rights to the film just to spite her ..... This was all highlighted in Trogs best selling autobiography. "Trog".

Man, if only Joan Crawford hadn't been so vain about her age and looks she could of had one hell of a second act on television. Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck all made prestigious t.v movies and event series where they won Emmys, and Joan Crawford would of been perfect in that kind of medium. I also realize she was sick for the last couple years of her life. But even before that she became a recluse after seeing an unflattering picture of herself in a newspaper.
