I had no idea there were three pilots for All in the Family. I've seen the episode in which this actress was casted as Gloria, and there was zero chemistry between the four of them. I was kind of young when the show aired with the cast we know and love today and fondly remember always asking my parents "what's so funny?" all the time when they were cracking up. My dad then told me "If you don't understand what was so funny, it's because you're too young to know." lol I still watch that show on DVD
@LeeKeels3 жыл бұрын
There were not. CBS ordered 13 episodes based on Mike Dann's (VP of Programming) viewing of this second pilot. Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner never filmed an actual "pilot" episode. They were simply the actors cast for the series when it went into production. The first episode of their run can't be considered a pilot since the series was already ordered before they started shooting it.

@@LeeKeels That may be true, but the first show using Reiner and Struthers was the 3rd attempt at the pilot script. The original name for the Bunkers was Justice, Archie and Edith Justice.
@vincegay9863 жыл бұрын
I didn’t fully appreciate how the series cast clicked until I saw the two pilot casts-both of which looked fine, if not compared with the cast they ended up with. I even forgave that Rob Reiner’s Mike was from Chicago, but he and his uncle’s accents were completely NYC. They should have just written them as New Yorkers and contrived that the uncle who raised Mike had moved to Florida or something. It actually seems like Reiner was the lynch pin. In the first two pilots, there’s no real driving force behind Mike, and therefore, no driving reason for Gloria to team up with him and defend him, for Archie to energetically oppose him, or for Edith to tolerate any of it, or hope for peace. For better and worse, Reiner’s Mike is driven by his political beliefs. That motivates him through school, and through relying on and putting up with and battling with someone who represents so much of what he’s against. It makes both Mike and Archie both more tolerable (Mike’s not just lazy and selfish; Archie isn’t always wrong to be aggravated by Mike) and a bit maddening (Mike’s just a bit more self-important and argumentative than he absolutely needs to be; Archie is just so mindlessly wrong about so much). Everyone is passionate about their positions, and often feels attacked. They’re not merely annoyed by each other. That increases the energy and the pace, which makes both the set-ups and laugh lines more rewarding. Much more firm ground for a long-running comedy series than what the first two pilots provide. And it’s all in the casting, performances, and direction. The scripts hardly changed. Also doesn’t hurt that, from the second pilot on, the set looked a whole lot more like the kind house in Queens the family would live in. It’s also very important that they got Mike’s look and sound right. I lived in the NYC area at the time, and Reiner reminded me of guys I saw and heard on the subway. The hair and clothes were right on the line between mainstream and counter-culture. The other two actors looked like a California-surfer type and a mainstream guy not different enough from Archie. This is very instructive for actors and anyone who has a role in casting.

All the Glorias were good, but Azzara seemed a little too worldly, and Peters didn’t seem like she could be formidable enough, if she needed to face off against her father or husband. The actor here in the Rob Reiner role really couldn't act, that was obvious, and it affected the others performances. I think the couples were viewed as a package/team, Archie/Edith and Mike/Gloria, hence their decision to re-cast her as well. Plus, she was too ethnic; I think the producers wanted someone more mid-western middle America type to balance out the cast, hence SS being cast. Plus SS was a bigger name, having appeared on Laugh In and Shindig. Also, this actually wasn't the first pilot; there was one made in '68 that up until the around 1996 was thought to be lost to the ages; it featured two different actors as Mike/Gloria and was even more crude and less polished than this one.
