The craziest thing I have ever seen. But I wont lie....2 minutes after I seen this video I had my cymbals covered in that thick smooth pungent smelling tomato sauce. It works...no doubt about it. VERY IMPORTANTLY it DID NOT remove the logo from the cymbal like most cleaners. Finished up with a nice polish and they are like new again. Thank you and your wife!!!
@2ndBreakfassst12 жыл бұрын
The cleaning properties of the ketchup can be done with lemon juice water, and white vinegar. However, the fact that the ketchup will stay in place is helpful. I would advise applying a protective coating after that, as the surface will become prone to oxidation after the cleaning.

I have tried this and can confirm that it works but in my case with some differences. I put a blob on a part of the cymbal and left it for maybe 20 minutes and rinsed off. Not much difference. Put another thick blob on and left overnight. Hey presto it works. Problem is just spreading more over the whole cymbal and leaving overnight created a very uneven finish. It seems that where the ketchup (sauce to us Australians!) was thickest it cleaned as the first blob did, but in areas where it wasn't so thick it didn't clean as well. Seems as though you might need to cover the whole cymbal with a thick coating rather than spreading with a cloth or brush. I also notice that it did effect the logo. Not a total wipeout, but over time if you continued with this method I suspect it would disappear. Doesn't bother me but I know some won't want that. Also I used an Australian tomato sauce (Masterfoods...no doubt far superior to Yankee stuff) so not sure if there's any difference between sauces in terms of the active ingredients. Anyway that's my 2 cents worth. Hope it's helpful to some.

Great video! I've used Ketcthup for years as a cymbal cleaner. You can also use it as a hardware cleaner. It's a great cheap cymbal cleaner and it is biodegradable too! It is a lot more "Natural" than Groove Juice or other cleaners.

The owner at my local drum store is older and pretty experienced. He told me to avoid acid cleaners for cymbals unless they are old 60's-70's like this one. The material for those can handle it but the acid can be harmful to many newer cymbals.

@danielgug....i agree. i'm a guitar player so i don't know cymbal brands all that well. i know the big names but i wasn't sure til i checked that aax was sabian and not zildjian. i think he was just a kid that wanted to see his name posted somewhere....it was pretty graphic in what he said and i didn't want to look at it anymore. thanks for replying.

the ketchup you put on it seems pretty thick, do you think i can spread just a thin layer of ketchup on the cymbal in order to get it all clean without using the whole bottle?
@CatchingGreenLights11 жыл бұрын
Awesome, I never thought about using ketchup. Orange juice (not the already made kind, but the juice you get from squeezing an orange) and also lime, lemon, and probably most citrus achieves a similar effect.

This works because Ketchup has salt and vinegar in it. A much more economical solution which achieves the same quality result is a mixture of distilled vinegar and salt; make a paste out of the salt and vinegar and rub it on the cymbal, and it will take off years of grime. It's even okay to rub like crazy with the salt crystals acting as an abrasive; bronze is harder than salt, so it won't harm the metal. I learned this from my mom when she taught me how to clean copper pots.

It works brilliantly even if it's thin too. I took a palm full of ketchup and spread it over my 20" ride. The layer is thin and the dirt came off nearly immediately after i spread it. So it's not necessary to but a thick layer :D

@kingtoadius Patina is one thing, but all that gunk clogs up the groves and hinders the movement of the cymbal, thus changing the sound. When I buy them new, they have a sound I want to preserve, so I clean my cymbals... And drums too! Every time I set up, people ask if my kit is brand new. No, the drums are 1995s and the cymbals are anywhere from 6 - 15 years old.

It's the vinegar in the ketchup. I use vinegar and flour with a little salt to make a paste and it will do the same thing. The acid in the vinegar is the key. It's easy and cheap.

I just watch this video but I have no ketchup, so... I tried mustard! I thought it would have the same effect due to the acidity of the mustard. Liquid Bar Keepers friend. About $3 for a large bottle. A little goes a long way and cleans with a cotton cloth and a little water. Rinse well and dry. Ketchup has additives and it's the tomato that has the acid, not the ketchup. If those are 1960 Zildjians, you just experimented with about $600 in cymbals.

yes, thick layer all over. let it sit and then just scrape off the ketchup. you can save the ketchup and reuse it again later to clean more cymbals.
