The director did a poor job directing the live action actor to play Sokka. Just this small clip was the embodiment of Sokka but the live action was the opposite. He was so animated like in this clip but so wooden in the live action. Sokka suppose to be a scardy cat, showoff, tactical and jokey but I hardly got that in the live action. hopefully the showrunners read the mixed reviews and direct the actor better for season 2.

LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION IDEA! If/when we get a live-action adaptation of Book 3's "The Ember Island Players," PLEASE have Jack De Sena be the playwright actor reprise his role as Sokka. And then when Jack De Sena's playwright Sokka asks "Who are you?" after receiving comedy bits from Ian's Sokka...instead of Ian responding with the original line, "I'm just a guy who likes comedy," have Ian's Sokka say, "I'm just a fan." After having watched all the episodes I’ll say this: If you want to ruin this show by giving it the impossibly high standard of the animated series you will ruin your experience. This show is great and adds to characters we already love. Things are condensed down because Netflix has 8 episodes and they have to run through 20, 20 mins episodes and still have story to tell that makes sense. Zuko, Aang, Iroh, Zhao, and Ozai are all my favorite characters in this series for this season. I think this is a show people will enjoy. I’m sorry if you will only hold it to the animated series

You can see that Gordon didn't know who this guy was, but was assuming he was a big deal because they said it was a big surprise.
