Over the past quarter of a century, the resource-rich eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have served as operating bases for multiple rebel groups.
The March 23 Movement commonly known as M23 is among more than 100 armed groups operating in this region where conflict is escalating, especially in recent months.
For some, M23 is an expression of popular anger over a dysfunctional Congolese government, corruption and abuses - abuses, historically, that have been particularly felt by Congolese of Rwandan origin.
While for others, it is the latest in a long line of Rwandan-linked rebel movements that represented a proxy for the economic or security ambitions of Rwanda.
In this episode of african biorgaphics, we look at the origins of congos’s m23 rebels who are currently wreaking havoc in the country.

People like you should be the ones spreading awareness about this conflict. I think those who spread information without education about Congo are creating a criminal ideology. As Africans, we need to be more educated to deal with each other in a human rights way, without blaming or killing each other. We were made to be one. Borders were created for us, and division is the poison that was installed within us. Peace to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, and the whole of Africa. Let us all heal as people and build our Continent with joy and Pride..

It was important that you mention 1: why mombutu was removed is because he was the one that first came to fight against rwandans that were just wanting to return home, then later hosted the army that had just committed a genocide near the border (which is prohibited by international law) to start attacking rwanda.

As a Congolese Tutsi now based in USA , First and foremost thanks for your professionalism and objective perspective on this critical issue. I can sense a deep dedication in your research. The beginning of Congo wars goes back to the aftermath of Tutsi genocide in Rwanda. Those people who committed genocide fled in Congo and got mixed with Mobutu soldiers and because of Mobutu ego and lack of good leadership skills he couldn’t separate the labels from his own soldiers leading to invasion from Rwanda. The rest is the results of the above mentioned reasons. There is more to this issue however my take on this, is that the current M23 is by no doubt supported by Kagame and the Current president in Congo is a coward to make bold decisions either in his country and against Kagame. Good job on your objective view point, waiting for more from your Channel.

The problem in Congo is much more complex than it looks. As a fellow African let me give you my take on this. The origin of this problem can be traced back to the 1885 Berlin Conference infamously known as the Scramble for Africa. Congo has been suffering from weak leadership for many years resulting in dangerous levels of tribalism. Banyamulenge(Banyarwanda) have been living in Eastern Congo way before Congolese independance and records attest of their presence in that area as far as the 17th century. So they are Congolese that is a fact, so I dont why Congolese politicians and even citizens want to denied them of their rights as Congolese and thats where the problem lies. Sure after the genocide many Tutsis fled to Congo and remained there to this day, but the vast majority return to Rwanda after the genocide ended and especially because the people who committed the genocide in Rwanda(FDLR) also fled to Congo. Sure Eastern Congo is rich in minerals and many countries including their neighbors as well as Congolese politicians and businessmen want to have a piece of that. But successive Congolese government also made the situation worse by not dealing properly with FDLR which represents a national security threat to Rwanda even supporting them in their attempts to destabilize Rwanda and take back the country. I think Congolese people should stop calling Banyamulenge and other Congolese Tutsis, Rwandan because it's a false narrative, they are Congolese too, they are your brothers and sisters of the same country that is a historical fact! They were once part of the larger Ruanda Urundi kingdom but due to colonialism they got separated from their original family and are now part of another country. You go anywhere in Africa and you'll find many tribes living in different countries, Congo is not an exception. Again weak leadership in Congo is causing all this pain and suffering to innocent civilians and the hate for such a small segment of the population(less than 2%) are building the condition of another genocide. Hopefully it won't happen 😢

Great presentation. I’m just wondering why you didn’t present the leadup to the Congo Wars well, especially with the Ugandan-Rwandan invasion of the Congo, overthrow of Mobutu and installation of an insignificant communist opposition leader Kabila as a puppet leader of the DRC. Kabila then stopped listening to his masters in the Rwanda-Uganda coalition and started doing things his way so the coalition reinvaded the Congo once again to depose him. This led to the biggest bloodiest war in African history, comparable to our WWI or WWII with backing from countries all the way from Angola, Zimbabwe & RSA, to the Chad, Libya, Sudan etc. So many countries were fighting either for or against the Congolese government but usually against the Rwanda-Uganda coalition. I also should mention the genocide against the Hutus by the Rwandan Tutsi in the eastern Congo, hundreds of thousands of them were killed to avenge the 1994 Tutsi genocide but the international community let it happen and still work with Kagame despite his genocide.

It is because you do not know the meaning of Genocide! The number of deaths is not the only criteria to call it genocide. That plan of exterminating race, ethic, region, Religion,... Will be the main basis of categorization. We all know that 1st World war killed very many people but it was not called genocide. Refugees were allowed to come home and FDLR wanted to use them as their motive, when FDLR were attacked to destroy its military base in DRC, the only accusation was to say that RDF were killing Hutus while was liberating them from your way kidnapping them. That time more hutus were living in Rwanda a well safe until those ethic were removed in Rwanda society structure! Be foul alone

They predate the creation of those countries and colonial borders. Engraved in our names, the names of our lands, mountains, hills, valleys, lakes and rivers, our songs, poems, dances and our long horn cattle. This is the same story across the Congo or any other country, as soon as you leave this region, the hills and valleys there bare the names of the tribe who reside there. You have either deliberately chosen to ignore these facts or you have no clue, either way, you will struggle to fool anyone. 14:24 dismantling Hutu extremist rebels outside of the Rwandan colonial borders????? He's essentially invading the DR Congo (which outside of his legal jurisdiction) because of perceived threats towards a certain ethnicity? Kgame is nuts. If the Hutu rebels trouble his land, he'd be well within his rights to manage the situation: the state would have to arrest the individuals or thwart attacks. Due process of criminal prosecution would have to ensue, including a trial, hearing of the matter accompanied with appropriate sentencing. They'd need to discuss this matter with their neighbours and present evidence of these threats and prosecute. And as for certain of the Tutsis fleeing for shelter from the genocide only to rouse trouble in their neighbouring land? I pray the Heavens will judge this matter. Lesson: we should never allow greed and the West to motivate us to commit atrocities against our brothers.

You forgot to lay out 2 crucial details. 1. How did the Kinyarwanda-speaking people"Tutsi" arrive in DR Congo? 2. How/Why did the FDLR flee in Congo and be hosted there while armed and residing in 10Km radius of the country they fled? -Geographically speaking, the borders between DR Congo and Rwanda were marked a while after people were already residing there, some of those people were Rwandans, what could they have done? leave they home? not speak Kinyarwanda or cut connections with Rwanda? it shouldn't be a crime to look like people from your neighboring country. -How is it a crime to speak the language of your neighboring country? help me understand this because it seems to be a problem for some Congolese, While some parts of their country are directly named in Kinyarwanda. (Mt Nyirangongo,...) -FDLR used to attack Rwanda and commit acts of terror in Rwanda which is one of the reasons they are supported by DRC as an ally since they allegedly have the common denominator of "fighting Rwanda". Mobutu Thought he helped his former friend by hosting those Genocide perpetrators instead, it was the beginning of another sad story.

Kinyarwanda is a bantu language, meaning that it has close relatives within it's surrounding. This is not only unique to kinyarwanda speaking people, but also other bantu languages. There was never a Tutsi tribe in DRC, but there were banyamulenge people related to them through linguistics. Banyamulenge Also coexisted with other several tribes who've been living in these regions for millennials. And there's no evidence to suggest that other tribes in these regions looked down upon banyamulenge prior to Rwanda's invasion of DRC.

Congo has 450 tribes who never commited genocide on each other. Rwanda with only 2 tribes we know what they did to each other. Tutsis despite claiming to be the victims are the people who actually ran hutus out of the country and took power in Rwanda, killing even more hutus than what they claimed on the genocide of Tustis. Now Tustis are claiming to fear genocide from Congolese 450 tribes who have no history of genocide... Is this not a red flag that any intelligent person will see? Tustis and Rwandans support of and involvement in wars in the Congo has cost Congolese over 10 millions of people, this is a real genocide beyond the fake crocodile tears Kagame has for their own self inflicted genocide in 1993. Since the genocide of Rwanda to today between Tustis and Hutus, who lost more lives and power? 4. Where are the Hutus right now? Who rules Rwanda right now and who is silenced or in exil between the hutus and Tustis? If you can answers to these questions honestly and still call me dumb, it will be clear you are here to defend a tribe and I am here to shake ideas and find the truth. I am not a hutu or a Tustis, I am an external observer who chose not to buy your lies and who is smart and fair enough to question your story and listen to hutus who are made the evil in all this without allowing them to speak.

At the individual level there are many fine and peaceful Rwandans both Hutus and Tutsis but at the collective level they are very difficult people, living with the anxiety of the lack of space in their homeland. Thus they harbor deep hatred and they have difficulty living in peace with other ethnic groups always trying either by covert means or through massacres to subjugate them. This explains all these claims to integrate into the DRC army but which always fail.
