I figured this song was about someone who deserted the Vietnam war and feels guilty about the people he left behind.

I think it could be interpreted as a dialogue: Both the hippie and the soldier thinks the other one “took the easy way out” one by joining the army, and one by protesting the war. (That’s what I think of when I’m listening to it, anyway.) It could also be the same person arguing with themselves, at two different stages of their life, both before and after their service. I think maybe we’re supposed to think it’s a soldier, or a veteran, addressing an AntiWar Hippie; but at the end of the song it’s the hippie addressing the soldier. Either way works, but the second is more subversive; and more in line with other political songs by this same group. (As I see it.)
