Thanks, I was leaving the powder as the last step. The only thing that I was taught in the hospital after I had my colostomy surgery was how to put it on. I wasn't taught how to remove it, where to dispose of it, what is considered a normal amount of waste and what is considered normal consistency. I have had to turn to KZbin for every single answer. Again, thank you very much for this video it really helped me out.

Thank you so much! I found I was wearing an appliance that was damaging my skin. I was allergic to the adhesive! I would have continued with the same product had someone not said they were also allergic to the same product! Ostomates are certainly the best!!!
@VeganOstomy8 ай бұрын
I experienced the same. Not an allergy, but some sensitivity to the tape border on Hollister bags. This came up years after I had no issues with the appliance. Had the change brands and the skin healed very quickly.

Thank you so much. Hah! You are way better than the stoma health nurse who showed me how to to do it for my dad the first time. After an appointment with the stoma health clinic, another nurse showed me the right way of doing it using the stoma powder, skin barrier spray and the stoma paste. No more problem with leaky wafers. I am so glad I get useful info and tips from you, Eric. God bless you much! I

A lot of stomas bleed really easily; it doesn't take much more than a little brush to get a drop of blood. That's not a big deal, but I've found I can just tap my belly (or jiggle it, lol) with my hand a few inches from my stoma and the excess powder falls right off without me having to brush it off right next to my stoma. :)
@VeganOstomy5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the "tap" method if what I do to get excess powder off! Be sure so still use some kind of barrier product over the power or else the wafer won't stick very well.

Thanks Eric! I'm actually going to attempt to do this just now. Will be my first time at it :o I think my concerns with using products such as stoma paste, cohesive rings and such is that I have a wound area that the Dr and nursing are caring for, trying to get healed up. Anyway, my wound is so close to my stoma, and is a bit concaved, I have to trim my wafer down some or it won't stick. Because I have to trim it down, it tends to loosen sooner then if I didn't have to trim. So, the paste or cohesive ring I use really doesn't have a good amount of time to adhere well, to where when I take my wafer off it stays attached to the wafer. My cohesive ring ALWAYS stays on my skin and it's a pain to get off! Because of this, I bet the powder would work better for me. I still want to try the paste though..I'm just a bit afraid. Will have to see if you have a vid on this..I think you mentioned to me once before. Have a great rest of your week! :)

Try karyaya paste...works great...put karyaya paste on skin, skin barrier, paste on wafer and attach to area. Put pouch on and gently hold in place with palm of hand for 30 to 60 seconds...all done and karyaya past helps with skin irritation

Iv been using stoma powder on & off since my operation June 2022.. & my stoma nurse has never mentioned using a barrier with it.. just dust the loose powder off & stick your ring - base plate on.. x

Hi Eric, I have a question. I feel like the skin under the adhesive/wafer would just get so itchy from not being able to "breathe". I'm not an ostomate, just a nurse, so I have no personal experience with this... but I can't get past the feeling that having the wafer on the skin 24/7 (except with short breaks when changing the appliance and possibly when showering) would drive me crazy. Maybe the best analogy is this: when I was a kid, I sprained my ankle and had a cast on my leg for two weeks. The feeling of my leg itching was absolutely maddening and there was no way to scratch it or get any other tactile stimulation- the cast was stuck on it. Is it like that at all with the wafer stuck on your skin? Or is this a non-issue? If it is an issue, what do you do to manage that? I know peristomal skin irritation is a pretty common issue, but I'm talking about a sensation that's not from actual skin irritation, just from the presence of the appliance itself stuck to the skin. Thanks :) (Suddenly wondering if I should get an appliance and wear it for a few days as a little experiment to see what it feels, like so I DO know first-hand... hm.)
@VeganOstomy6 жыл бұрын
With the right appliance, it won't get itchy! I forget I even have one on most of the time. Some people may find it itchy when they've had it on too long between changes or I'd they're sweating a lot, but this shouldn't be a constant thing. I have found that when I try a new appliance from different brand that my skin needs to adjust and things can be itchy for a few days then fine after that 👌

Okay Eric it is Patricia we've had several conversations recently about other things but I had an actual ostomy nurse come to my house because I had a cyst near my stoma and he explained to me about the sticks and also recommended stoma powder and spray no problem😮😮😮 not once did he ever tell me to redo the process and I saw him on several occasions because of the cyst😮😮 this explains why I had problems with the appliance sticking because the surface wasn't correct😢😢😢😢😢
@patriciadavis1393 Жыл бұрын
I forgot to add that is sad that there is very few ostomy nurses and I thought he was a good one but if he didn't use or know this technique that is a sad commentary on what's happening today in our Healthcare System😢
@danderson50843 жыл бұрын
I've been doing that with a little powder and a Cavilon wipe then after the wafer is on I squirt some more powder around the stoma join through the gap. Don't know if it is a good idea or even necessary but thought it would get more powder around the edge without worrying about excess causing a problem with the wafer sticking.
@VeganOstomy3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good idea. Let me know how it goes after doing it for a while 👍

I have sores on my stoma itself as well as around on the skin. The nurse said to put this powder and barrier on the stoma (colon) itself. Do you ever have this happen and do you think its ok? Because you said not to get the spray on it.
@VeganOstomy4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. It really depends on the type of sore. Granuloma are pretty common and can be treated in a few different ways. If they are sores from irritated skin, then the stoma powder and barrier (crusting) won't hurt. The spray isn't designed to go on the stoma, so I avoid it. It should still be safe when used as directed by your nurse. I would trust your nurse's advice.

How do u do it under the stoma??
@VeganOstomy4 ай бұрын
If getting the bottle of powder under the stoma is difficult, it may be helpful to apply powder to a cotton swab (q-tip) and use that to apply the powder under the stoma. It helps to use a mirror.

Have you ever tried Convatec ESENTA barrier spray. I think it use to be the Sensi line but they changed the name. I usually use Cavalon Wipes with great results but my suppliers ran out of them this month and my insurance would not cover the Cavalon spray (so frustrating ) so they are sending me these ESENTA sprays instead.. Just wondering because cant seem to find much reviews on this or the Sensi Barriers. Thanks
@VeganOstomy2 жыл бұрын
It does look like the Esenta products are a rebranding. I think the adhesive remover from that line should be very similar (or the same) as the Niltac, but I'm not sure how the barrier product compares to anything I've used. I don't tend to use barrier products anymore, but I'd be interested to hear how it compares with the Cavalon once you've been able to try it.

@@VeganOstomy Sure I will get back to you on it :)
@jodiv29282 жыл бұрын
@@VeganOstomy well I have been trying the ESENTA barrier spray for the last few changes and its ok.. but I have to say I like cavalon wipes better.. My biggest issue with it being that its an aerosol, and when I spray it tends to get everywhere and not very concentrated to where I want it to go.. Other parts of my skin as well as my stoma that I dont necessarily want it to go gets a little tacky and I have to wash it off. At the same time I dont know as well how good of a seal it is giving me either because when I feel the areas I have stoma powder I think I can still feel its a bit powdery and dont know how well its sealing unlike when I would seal the powder with a wipe.. I have not had any leaks, and my skin has stayed healthy. No redness or anything, so it has that going for it. I will use the two cans they gave me but I think I am staying with wipes. If I cant get cavalon I will get Bravo or Adapt wipes.. thank you for everything you have given to us other ostomates..
@VeganOstomy2 жыл бұрын
Great writeup! Thanks for sharing that. I also dislike aerosols that can't be easily controlled. In that case, I tend to spray some on a gauze pad and then dab that gauze pad on my skin. It works just like a barrier wipe at that point and doesn't make a mess! 😁

What if your skin under your wafer is itchy what do you do to prevent that from happening again
@VeganOstomy6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cindy, itchy skin can be caused by many reasons. If it's itchy and red then you may have an allergy or sensitivity to the wafer and you might want to try another product. Has this recently been a problem or has it been ongoing?

Yes, I found this works for me but I didn't think I needed to add another layer. I noticed its pretty hard to remove film from skin for next application espiecally if you want to try a new product from a different company( different bags, donuts). I noticed I'm having a hard time transitioning . Any suggestion on how to remove film from skin to get a clean fresh start?
@VeganOstomy6 жыл бұрын
+Nahomie Riche I would use an adhesive remover and then mild soap and water. These barrier products are not designed to be very permanent and should come off the skin easily.

I have heard of some people who do substitute stoma powder for cornstarch, although it may be preferred to find a stoma powder that works better for your skin.
