A lecture by Nicholas Stanley-Price.
Only four months after its arrival in Cyprus, the British administration had Alessandro Palma di Cesnola arrested for illicit excavation. Unpublished British records throw light on his arrest, detention and trial at Larnaca. The case exemplifies the initial interaction of Cypriot society, Ottoman law and British colonial rule in 1878, and the roles in it of such figures as Sir Garnet Wolseley and C.D. Cobham and institutions such as the British Museum.
Recorded at CAARI in September 2018 and uploaded with the kind permission of Dr Stanley-Price.
