I was just happy to chat with you about hustle and burnout, I had no idea you'd turn that conversation into this incredibly rad story! Thank you so much, Matt. Seriously, means the world to us to know you and be part of the amazingly thoughtful content you're putting out into the world. ☺️💪🏼 And for anyone watching this video and feeling like you're on the edge of burnout, don't beat yourself up over it. It happens to all of us. It sucks, but you will get through it. Give yourself space and time to recover. 🙌

This hit me so hard. I'm in college and working two jobs right now, and just found out that due to an accounting error I have to wait an entire year to apply to my terminal program. While at first that was devastating, I've started to see it almost as a blessing in disguise. Now I can take a year to be whole person after grinding so hard for the last 3 years, and I'll probably finish my education stronger for it

Life is about struggle. We're not meant to be completely comfortable all the time. Obviously balance is key, but without struggling to reach those moments of comfort you will find yourself empty, your comfort will be a cage. Take a break when your body is telling you you need to but don't underestimate the value of hard work.

Wow such wise words! I have to admit that hardwork make me satisfied! I feel like my life is worth living it..like after the job getting done , there is a full sensation that you gave your all and no matter the results are going to be you will be proud of existing. After all if all the things were being easy to approach, it would be platonic..

you need to find meaning in life, not base your life on studies and work, after finding meaning, incorporate studies and work and find out why you're actually doing it, if studies and work helps you progress your meaning in life, keep going, if not, draw out an alternative that will help u fulfil life. the biggest mistake at where you're at is basing your self worth on your studies and work.

Relates so damn hard. I was working a full time 8-9hr job, extra freelance work after hours till 12am-2am, as well as trying to learn a new field through an online course I paid for. This went on for around 6 months. Sure the money was great, but I hit a point where I wasn't motivated to do anything anymore. I dropped the freelance work, but still find due to the workload, I kinda killed my passion for the industry I work in, and am wanting to just move away from it at this point.

This video is so true. I burnt out 5 years ago because I was constantly pushing myself more and more, had no real support from my family so I was trying to proove them wrong all the time, I felt like a disappointment to everyone because I couldn't sustain a 9-5 lifestyle like most people I know and so, I felt like I had to push always a bit further, even though I had legit reasons to slow down (lost a brother and my apartment in the same year and my dad had been rushed to the ER months before it all fell down). I crashed hard my very first day on my dream contract, which I had to cancel because of it. Took years to get out of that same pattern of being overly involved in everything, sometimes, even things I should not be involved in in the first place... So yeah, setting boundaries is EXTREMELY important. Otherwise, the losses you're gonna get might be much greater than what you would have "lost" resting. As my therapist said, resting is just as important to recharge your batteries lol

One thing I've learned from my own burnout experience is that not all work is equal. 1 hour of doing purposeful, meaningful, deep work (as defined by YOU) isn't the same as 1 hour of engaging in mindless, shallow pursuit. The right work, done with right thinking, strengthens your life force. Good decisions MAGNIFY your magic. Bad decisions drain it. There was a time when all I did was binge on Netflix all week while eating junk. Although I did it because I was needing "a break", it didn't restore me. It weakened me in every sense (spiritually, mentally, physically, socially, etc). So a big part of getting this "right" is really figuring out YOUR path. When you're on YOUR path, you could be working for long hours and yet feel ALIVE, feel energized, and feel you are exactly right where you are supposed to be. (I'm NOT saying that you can't feel shitty feelings when you're on your rightful path -- actually, as many of us know, doing truly meaningful, purposeful work often involves shitty stuff like constantly feeling out of your depth, tackling tougher challenges, dying a thousand deaths over and over again as you transform, etc). Another thing is the importance of CONTEXT. There may be times when not working for a long stretch of time might be what would truly give you what you need in that moment. And there may be times when the opposite might be true.

Not only you burnout, you get to the point that you do not want to do that work anymore but you are stuck with it because is your only income and you are completely unhappy. People will say that you have an option, go and find another job but they do not understand that what they call another job is a regular job MONDAY to Friday, 8-5pm that not only will not pay you the same but is the same type of job that they wish they could quit. I've been working 6 days a week for almost 3 years losing my paid vacation and PTO days that I earned for a company the clearly doesn't care and I'm feeling extremely burnt out. I used to love my job and making peoples lives better with the work I do but that's not what it feels like anymore. This video struck me the most because I have been through burnout which greatly contributed to my depression. I am still suffering depression and anxiety right now but I already learned a lot from my experiences. Just this month I decided to stop school just to take a break because it has been so long where my body is very stressed about school works especially with expectations from others. I was hesitant at first because I kept saying to myself is that if I stop I will be left behind but I realized the time for yourself is very vital for each one of us because it can greatly affect our mental and physical health. each one of us deserves rest from things that give us stress and time to restart or have time to think through. Thank you so much, Matt, for sharing this video because it made me feel that I am not alone and we all have these circumstances in our lives. :)

This remembered me of my last year at university. It was so full that for an entire year I didn't rest my mind nor my body. Study every day from morning to late night, work all weekends, repeat. Even holidays like Christmas or Easter were full of things to do. Generally when you end a semester, you have like a week to relax but I hadn't. When finally in summer I got my degree and I went to the beach, I felt in paradise, it was almost weird not having nothing to do...so I just can say that rest is not just a good thing, is *necessary*

Thank you so much for posting this. I suffered extreme burnout at the end of music college and had a complete mental, physical and emotional collapse. Ended up in hospital with a breakdown and then on and off for years. It took me 15 years to even look at music again. But now I drift along aimlessly, too frightened to get involved with anything in case it happens again. It was so traumatic and I lost everything. Despite this lack of ambition, I am much healthier and happier now and life is good. It might not look how I originally thought it would look, but that's okay. You're always taught that if you work hard, you can do anything you want. Sometimes you can work too hard. There's nothing wrong with hard work. You gotta do it the right way. I wish more videos like this were around at the time I was at college.

I am so passionate about music but I was gigging back to back the WHOLE of two years ago (at least 4/5 gigs per week excluding energy for travelling), that I had to cut it back to about one or two shows every three months. I even passed out twice on a train to a gig in Manchester, UK - *I reached my burnout period.* There were opportunities that I had to pass up on because it was all too much. But once you get a good break from it, you learn to love it even more and work at a pace that is suited to you. And don't worry, the right people will always understand 🕊️❤️

Matt your videos are so inspiring and this one is exactly what I needed today. I never usually comment on videos but I just wanted to say that as a film school graduate myself, it's so heart-warming to see someone who loves their craft, making people happy with their work! Thanks again for putting out so much great content! :)

Matt, you're videos get better and better besides them looking very good, the lessons and the questions being raised helps a lot and makes me process how I should approach the options that come up to me in life when it's about school or work. I've been preparing every time before a semester, knowing how much effort it would require to meet my targets and goals also trying to find that balance between my health and really find that peace in the midst of that. Sometimes I get stuck in the hustle and sometimes it's hard to keep up that momentum that I've built up. The idea that you can create rules is something I never thought and I found that very helpful, thanks Matt.

I was burned out after building a house while being in college as an IT student and working on the side and writing a book all at the same time. After I thought I had recovered, I would still break down because of minor things that went wrong. My boyfriend helped me get through all of this.

I am honestly so grateful for subscribing to this channel. I have started throwing things away (even sentimental items, after taking pictures of them), when previously I was a hoarder. I have employed a more minimalist approach towards my spending habits, spending money on the core aspects of my life. And now you are helping countless people realise that it is human to burn out, even when it comes to something you are truly passionate about. Thanks, Matt D'Avella. You are truly a gem in the KZbinr community.

Hey Matt, thank you so much for this. It's a great message, however, I miss something in the story. I think it is also really important to learn to set priorities and to find out what your responsibilities are. Because working less may definitely help, but sometimes does not take off the feeling of pressure. I do really like the video and all of your work, thank you!

Burnt out - me right now! Great video, great timing. I'm a single mum with an 8yo son, running my own graphic design business from home. If I don't do the work we don't eat. But over the last few weeks I feel like I've been treading water and dragging myself around just trying to get the work done and its definitely affecting my sense of self and my ability to parent with sanity. Great to be busy, but overloaded is a whole new level.

I've been a freelance video editor for 2 years, and while I've had short spells of creative exhaustion, it wasn't until the end of 2018/beginning of 2019 when I experienced full-on crippling burnout. I got a lot of big projects from a client of mine and it became so overwhelming that I shut down. I worked a part-time job to keep the lights on, but did little to no editing during most of that time. I gave myself half of December and all of January to recover, then decided this month that I want to break out of this, so I started working on small projects for myself and a few clients to build up my confidence. Now, I'm gonna be tackling those big projects! It's gonna suck, but I think the guilt of not doing them and letting my client and myself down outweighs the workload needed to complete them.

Thank you Matt! You have (en)lightened me! It is definitely a wicked spiral; set a goal, sprint, crash, sprint, achieve goal, then burnout. Repeat. I hated myself for even checking the clock and not meeting my hourly, and sometime minute by minute deadline. This video my friend, has set the path in changing my mindset.

Damn Matt your videos always help me in the right time to make sure I am in check with what I’m doing. TIME MANAGEMENT can be a hit or miss when you’re an entrepreneur and I’ve definitely had the mentality of “once the business is successful I will have time to do what I want.” Not that I don’t love to do what I do, but I just feel like there’s no time to workout, eat healthy & even go outside for a breather. I love that you don’t just explain the issue but you give people solutions!

I was 15 when the tiredness started, I was 16 when I was diagnosed with my burnout. Now I’m 18 and after years of sleep clinics and hospital visits I’m slowly recovering but... this November it all started again, it was such a hard relapse that even my body couldn’t provide for itself, my hair fell out, my lungs didn’t work properly etc. Once again I was stuck in the same loop with the diagnosis you and you’re body are too tired to take care of you’re self. Thursday 26 March I lived on 3 hours sleep, 8 hour school, 3 hour training, this day was one of my hardest day ever since the relapse, physically and mentally I was broken, i completely broke down. I was so tired I couldn’t even talk this day but I still finished it, with what result ? I only wrote my name on my English exam and walked away of the class because I couldn’t even write my name on the paper, I broke down in front of my coach on the ice because i couldn’t even do the most basic things and I was just beating my brain up the whole day with you gotta work harder you are weak.... once again i was stuck in this loop, the same old routine.... but then Sunday 29 March the lockdown in The Netherlands stared. Guys during this quarantine i realized my mistake it was the same loop of doing too much without rest I made the same mistakes as when I was 15 years old and I didn’t even realized it. This lockdown made me realize it and oh boy I rested the first 2 weeks I just slept my body shut down, after those 2 weeks I decided I’m going to change my life around. I am training again with energy, i started learning again and eventually graduated while everybody around me told me it was impossible, i got accepted to my dream college. I simply started to be me again and that’s how I came on you’re KZbin channel you are so inspiring and helping so many people, this video is exactly what my brain was thinking before I changed my life around and now this video pops up in my recommendations and woah guys please watch this video, it is amazing how accurate he got this. Now I am becoming stronger than ever physically and mentally !!! And I won’t make the same mistakes ! Thank you so much for all the inspirational and educational videos !! And thank you guys for reading this, to be honest I don’t know why I wrote this, I guess what he is saying gave me a flashback from 1 month ago, the growth I made this last month just makes me so exited to see what the future brings! Wish you all the best love you all, you can do it ❤️🙏🏼

Thank you so much! This may sound as the most cliche comment ever but after 2 burnouts my advice is: make a night routine for you’re self ! Even if you gotta learn a lot in the evenings etc. just a small routine of like 15 minutes? To give your body the signal: okay now it’s time to go sleep ! Because no matter how busy you are or how much stuff you gotta do, without sleep it’s only gonna get more, more, more pressure and than boem the burnout happens... Goodluck at Nursing school you can do it !❤️🍀

I‘m surprised you and no one else mentions meditation and other self-care practices. The more you are connected to yourself and your body, the quicker you feel imbalances and the earlier you slow down. I think a big reason people burn out is because they are terribly disconnected from themselves.
