Just one of the many things that I really like this series is how it realistically shows how polluted, abused, and ruined the universe is as a result of the rampant amount of life and civilizations in it. This series breaks your heart as much as it blows your mind.

Aye, it takes pressure off of us and our destructive nature, in a sense, then magnifies it to an unbelievably immense and terrifying scope universally across every other species. We're not terrible, we're normal, and that's terrifying.

I finished reading The Redemption of Time last month, and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was amazing how a fan of the Three Body Problem series could have written that book in such a short time after the release of Death's End. Sophon's description of overall structure of the pocket universes started to scratch an itch in my brain. She said that there were multiple great universes and pocket universes all existing on a membrane. Then later they find out that the mass of the universe is "set" incredibly precisely/delicately to just barely allow a big crucn, and deviation from that total mass will result in a big chill/rip, preventing it from restarting. Those two pieces of info, along with the theme of the "nature" of the universe not being so natural, having been influenced by countless civilizations, across multiple dimensions of space, made me ask: "Why would the dark forest stop at just the edge of the universe?" If we make the, admittedly, big assumption that the universes could detect other universes, but similar dark forest rules applied, then perhaps the fundamental rules, including the mass limit, could be part of a "safety signal" to prevent dark forest strikes from other universes. Thought it was a fun idea.

Universe have their own physics. Once you leave universe and enter universe the laws of physics are different hence we cannot use laws of physics as weapons as intelligent life did within universe. Your idea have other flaw. The problem was not that the mass was set. It was greater than big crunch criticality. They were unsure that what exactly will be enough massfor big crunch. That is why it was important that other pocket universe makes same decision.

Remember, the Trisolarans actually encountered another universe within a fundamental particle when trying to unfold a proton into higher dimension; the "eyes" that tried to burn Trisolaran cities by focusing the light of one of their suns. So in that sense I guess you could say the dark forest theory extends beyond universes

Oh yes, Environmentalism has always been a theme in the series, since the very first installment. The Co-founder of the Threebody Organization was a radical environmentalist. Ye Wenjie read the book ‘Silent Spring’ during her time at the Red Bank Base, which was about the apocalyptic environmental disaster caused by insecticide abuse in the US. Different chemicals interact in the natural bodies and created new toxins, the unpredictable results making chemical decontamination extremely difficult. The advanced civilizations of the Universe are the ones abusing the insecticides. They use horrific and unstoppable, ever-expanding weapons of mass destruction to cull the younger races, who are literally just insects to them. However they themselves cannot cancel out the effects of these weapons, and find themselves under the same threat they put the younger races in. Ironic. Just like how humans got poisoned by chemicals of our own production.

Try to remember.. we created DE and DM theories because our laws of physics dont work on the meta scale. We have no evidence of their existence. We need them to make out current laws work. Also : infinite intropy imo is simply the result of ignoring all laws of physics except your preferred one. Unless expansion eluminates gravity etc..every particle will still be attracted to every other particle. If expansion resulted in matter/energy simply being spread out evenly...our current universe would already be a thin soup

What impressed me most about this series had less to do with the sci-fi aspects and more the anthropological. The amount of care and attention given to the question about how humanity would respond to the fact that they know an existential threat is heading towards them; they know when (or at least have a good idea) and as to when and what form it will take. Throwing in that the ETA is beyond the first several generation's lifetime, but not so far out that it isn't constantly on everyone's minds. There was a time when this type of thing was something people had to deal with. In the Ancient world, when you are aware an enemy army is heading your way, but might not get there for several months or even a couple years. That really isn't something that's been an issue for a long time. There was a realism to how everytime someone was taken out of stasis after being asleep for decades or a century, to find that the world was completely different from how it was before, including society's view on the Trisolarans imminent arrival: from hopelessness to authoritarianism; a martial preparedness to denial. It's like watching an entire species going through the various stages of grief.

This series left me with lots of amazing questions in a good way. Did the Trisolarians and Humans ally? Who were the beings who used to be in higher dimensions? What would two dimensional time be like? How did the philantropic civilisations survive amongst the trigger happy dark forest hunters? Who did Trisolaris have a war with? Whos trade routes were near Cixin's star? How were civilisations changing maths? Did AA see blood floowing in two dimensions? The author throws in so many single sentences that send your mind racing.

The universe of this series, as dire as it seems, is ultimately more hopeful than the universe in which we, the readers, live in. Coming to that realization is a great moment of cosmic horror!

Enjoyed the concepts in the book but the character Cheng Xin kind of ruined the series for me. To trust her once with the fate of mankind was suspect, to trust her a 2nd time after her abject failure was beyond comprehension.

A lot of readers felt the same as you. When the novel was first published, Liu did respond to this question raised by many fans. If I recall correctly, he said this reflects the reality of humanity. Humans are not always strong and united; we have flaws, weaknesses, and sometimes we are too kind. Our gestures have good intentions, but the results can turn out bad.
@Soppaisfree
@Soppaisfree Жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean but I disagree. Firstly, she really was not trusted for the 2nd time, she just took on a responsibility that in hindsight was responsibility over the humanitys' survival. She gave the ownership of Halo Company to Wade but it was not the humanity that placed trust in her. Instead I feel as if she took on a huge responsibility either naively or out of massive arrogance and belief that she knows best. In the end she makes the wrong choise but it is discussed that it was a delay of about 34 years at thst point. In reality more time was wasted by humanity by banning lightspeed research as there are years and years between her receiving the fairytales and her awakening in bunker era. If that time was spent, already, on lightspeed research it couldve been on time. So really, the 2nd mistakes was a larger decision and her mistake on making Wade give up was not a responsibility given to her but instead one she just took on. I think her character is actually quite good in that she is very human and makes a lot of mistakes, even after she should know better she is just a crisis era human, not a galactic era human. Its also shown in the discussion at the end when they ponder whether to return to the grand universe or not

Have you ever played "No Man's Sky "? It's an amazing space game and would be perfect for using footage of frigates, freighters, and other massive and/or small space ships. Whole fleets of ships are constantly popping out of hyperspace when you're flying around any star system. Plus there's an infinite amount of flora and fauna that are procedurally generated. Many creatures look like they're right out of a Lovecraft story. The game is so big it would take everyone on Earth working 24/7 for 15,000 years to visit every star system and planet and moon. It's an amazing space game that I guarantee you'll find very entertaining. Funny tip, you literally have to use Stargates to visit planets. There's pictographs you have to input in order to travel to planets previously found by people. (Just like the Stargate movies and shows)

29:00 Person of Interest especially Season 4 Episode 11, "If..Then ..Else", is some of the best TV. I can't think of any other media depicting how an actual AI or near Super human AI even in a diminished state would process info. And what a battle tween two such systems would could look like. The series starts off a little slow but really picks up. 100% recommend it. This is coming from someone who research engineer specialising in FPGA/ASIC design for Hardware Accelerated AI systems.

I just ended to listen the third book (I listen several hours a day audiobooks while doing low effort tasks ,so I heard one after the other). I don't wanna sound cocky , but the truth is that is hard for me to lost again fear. All my life I've been doing crazy stuff just to master emotions. I didn't got scared with these books. Maybe because I am aware the world is against us on many many ways. thing is , they made me feel something that I find much worse. I truly felt despair. Hopelessness. It was like those monsters in Harry Potter (dementors, those that suck your joy). I am a true believer in human progress and I love humankind. So reading how ,just like a rollercoaster, we go the wrong path again and again, meanwhile getting the anxiety produced by the imminence of catastrophe. Never in my life I got to feel emotions so strong . For me , the only way to don't fall into nihilism if you incorporate this view of the universe(is fiction but gives you a pov about the cosmos that it doesn't matter if it's a fairly tale or not) is to work on self awareness and to see how lucky and awesome is to be alive. Btw, AWESOME channel my friend. As a 40k lore junkie (no bs I've read over 100 books haha) , would be nice to hear your thoughts. It's a different tone, with a lot of over the top stuff and bad writing, but believe me when you imagine yourself living there... Is crazy donkies

Dude, you get it, it has nothing to do with loving humankind, It is a poorly written story in far more areas of the book then others.

@@craigsolomon1657 the "love for HK" was to support why I got so emotional while progressing the story and doing again and again stupid sht. On the other side, I didn't understand why I got it and the poorly written story part as well (dunno if you are talking about all the books, some parts,etc.). And it's because I want to understand your comment only, not refuting writing quality (spent over a decade reading only non fiction and academic stuff, so I lack the skills to spot literature mistakes or masterful structures,etc).

The idea of a contained mini-universe is sorta like what Greg Bear did in Eon novel. It involved a infinitely long, artificial tube-like universe, and the existence of which eventually was found to hinder the larger universe's evolution / ending.

It's not often I can't put down a book, it's even rarer for me to go straight into a sequel instead of something different. Tool two months. Now I have to finish Reynolds.
