It's an Australian poem from the late 19th century, when a lot of English men moved to Australia for a while and then back home. So the world is rolling back in that the narrator's friends are all going back where they came from.

The words by Henry Lawson were about the inevitable loss of contact with childhood friends as they all entered manhood in Sydney NSW Australia. In his time most travel from Sydney was by ships many small steamers mostly to all parts of Australia but also overseas. The "Outside Track" was stearage of third class travel. In the end he laments the loss of all of these childhood friends.

@@robertarmstrong4801 I found Henry Lawson some time after I posted this comment. Garnet R. eliminates the first & last verses. The first is most important and lovely! Sets the stage for the following verses.

@@altonstone5547 Gerry Hallom wrote the tune Rogers uses, and Hallom didn't sing the first & last verses, so I think Rogers is just following Hallom. I agree with you about the first verse. James Fagan sings both of the verses that are missing here, on the Nancy Kerr, James Fagan CD, Between the Dark and Light.

@@teucer915 Wouldn't it mean they are going to England for the first time after their parents moved to Australia?

Folk music often has a lot of sadness to it, because hey, people's lives were often sad back in the day.
