Loved that test. In the early 80s I traded my rectangular port heads for a set of race ported oval ports because of the low end power they provided on the street. im building a 461 right now with the factory oval port heads im using a comp cams Magnum 294S Mechanical Flat Tappet Camshaft Lift: .595''/.595" Duration: 294°/294° Lobe Separation Angle: 110° RPM Range: 2500-6500 10.5 -1 calculated compression ratio duration at .050 is 248 which seems like a somewhat compareable camshaft to the one you used it seemed all the heads except maybe the afrs would have done better with an edelbrock performer rpm intake im at a bit of odds right now between single and dual plane intake however it seems to have ample torque to get the car moving with the single plane and a plate might be in the cards .......Love your stuff thanks for all you do !

@@garageredzone normally do but these made more power with less flow, I guess the difference was smaller chambers.. I have noticed that if the more lift doesnt help flow you can size you cam according to that.
@Dr_Xyzt
@Dr_Xyzt 4 жыл бұрын
During the time the valve is opening and closing, that's when the low-lift flow becomes a factor in mid-upper RPM performance. That's when the valves are in overlap. The amount of time in overlap, with the right manifold runner length, and header setup, will purge the cylinder and the combustion chamber. --You're supposed to be able to make 1.3 foot pounds of torque per cubic inch with a well planned built, no matter what design of engine you have(pushrod, 2-valve, 5 valve dohc, it doesn't matter). If you know what you're doing, you can get it. Otherwise, you're gonna be closer to 1.15.

What is over looked is with the high quality small runner aluminum heads, they get better mileage and the rings last longer because the air fuel mixture isn't crashing into the cylinder wall like stock iron BBC heads typical do
@Dr_Xyzt
@Dr_Xyzt 4 жыл бұрын
Those AFR 265's are a great cylinder head. That's a good overall setup. I'm looking at the bubble from 4300 to 5200. 560 foot pounds. At 1.3 foot pounds per cubic inch, we should be able to get 608 foot pounds out of that top-end assembly. That's around 750 CFM at 5500 RPM. If the carb is rated at 28" water, that's 1psi pressure differential over the carb. Which is 13.7/14.7 density loss. That is 93%, or, 566 foot pounds out of a total of 608 available. Right in-line with where everything is. --So, if the bubble represents the cam, head, header, and intake being able to scavenge the chamber on a 468, A 496 would need (496/468) times as much compression, which gives us. 10.6:1. And to get that extra air density, an adapter that tapers at 7-degrees from a 4150 flange, to a 4500 flange might be the ticket to get us there. The additional air density might make that bubble bigger. -What about the GM manifold that came on the RamJet502? I wonder what it can do if you hog out the front of it to fit an oval throttle body for a 5.0 coyote.

Thanks for doing yet another tremendous job with massive info for us viewers! BBCs seem to like lots of overlap and duration, but this cam seemed on the small side. How about another 0.100” lift? Most of the heads showed good flow up through 0.600 to 0.700, and a 2.25 intake valve would generally suggest at least 0.650 lift. I’m thinking these heads could do just fine on that 496, too. Excellent job , I always look forward to your content Richard , I asked earlier not sure if you answered , what happened to Bryce , he ported a victor junior intake for me ten years ago and did a fantastic job but then seemed to burnout.

I currently have a 10.5:1 468 with the 2.25 intake valve GM aluminum "roval" head. I really want to build a 496 with an AFR 300 Magnum Oval for a street 68 Chevelle.

I was running the compression on your engine with the -22 CC domes you had paired along with the 049s that have 119CC chambers and came up with a number closer to 9.55:1. You said something closer to 10:1. is your deck height different then .04? Once you moved over the Edelbrock heads with 100CC chambers wouldn't you be able to provide more cam because of the increased compression ultimately adding more horsepower? I'm just learning this stuff so sorry for the stupid question.
@richardholdener1727

why would you change the cam with a change in compression? also what gasket thickness and ID and deck height did you use for compression calculation?

Learning a lot... But I do know that cam is way to little for a Big Block Chevy especially if you put 600+ lifts in LS engines which are smaller... That's just from paying attention to the channel💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾.. but great info

just wanted to know why u didnt use the speedmaster 305 cc intake runner oval port heads, also i think the reason why the afr 265 oval port heads made more power is becuz the comb. chambers were so much smaller, more compression probably at least 2 or three points higher, i guess the motor liked that alot
@richardholdener1727
@richardholdener1727 3 жыл бұрын
2 or 3 points higher? um.....no! The little head offered more of everything that counted-just not port volume

I noticed that you did not keep the compression ratio constant over the test. Seems like the chamber volume varied from 121 cc down to 111 cc. Doesn't that alone invalidate the test.

Hey Richard, great video. What I am really curious about especially with the afr 265s is if you added another atmosphere of boost, would it actually double the horsepower to 1200+ or would they not support that kind of cylinder filling? I assume the reason they made that much power is because they filled the cylinder so well with a high port air speed. Curious on your thoughts. Also, when are we going to see the BBC Big Bang video???

the question is,does anyone build 468s anymore? With blocks harder and harder to find you end up with an aftermarket Dart or similar and 540 begins the journey for the BB in the 21st century weather it be a Hotrodder or street strip engine and even if you do have a clean GM block with parts coming in as kits these days 496 seems to be the bare min .

How about the less oil in the pan more power myth? That there is a point where you can make max hp and oil pressure with less vs more oil in the pan causing more drag and lower psi ( so I've heard)
