The sunk cost fallacy. If you regret buying Sims 4 DLC, falling for sunk cost and trying to lie to yourself about how you feel, or worse continuing to keep buying DLC that isn't worth it to you does nothing but make the situation worse. When you do accept that you regret how you spent your money in the past, you'll be able to learn from your mistakes and grow past them. That's better than wallowing, being ashamed of what happened and not improving yourself. I had to learn from my mistakes after I bought Cats and Dogs and was so disappointed, it really didn't feel worth that $20 price for me and I went in expecting it to be fantastic based on how Sims 4 stans talked about it at the time. After that purchase all those years ago I've made the effort to learn from it so it wouldn't happen again. I got better at avoiding biased glazer-type Stan fan opinions and recognizing good vs bad reviewers. That DLC purchase was a mistake I made and regretted at the time, but I've literally not regretted ANY game or DLC purchase I've made since this experience I had with the Sims 4. I hope this can inspire people. Yes you can avoid falling into an endless cycle of sunk cost, you can avoid getting tricked by hype, you can learn from the past, you can avoid repeating the past, and you can avoid making more bad purchases in the future no matter how much money you've already poorly spent. Even a Sims 4 player that's spent over a thousand dollars on this game can learn and grow from their experience like I did. ❤

Yea thing is, Sims 3 also had feature creep and I recall a sims 3 team member straight up not recommending players to buy all of the DLC due to how it would slow down the entire computer (didn’t stop them from selling individual items/worlds innthe create a sim catalogue tho xoxo). But that was because sims DLC back then was a genuine expansion on an already good ass game; you bought what extra pieces you specifically wanted to glam up the doll house, but you could easily play with just the doll house itself for hundred of hours without issue (looking at my pre-teen ass with PS3 sims 3 and no knowledge of DLC even existing for it). Sims 4 DLC feels like the doll house’s wall panels that were sold separately, are weren’t even measured to fit the bare skeleton foundation correctly. It fuckin sucks man

People are addicted to the hype cycle. It’s definitely an overconsumption/addiction/dopamine issue. The product is subpar at best, but they love the hype. I went into depth in a different comment, but I fully agree this is like addict behavior... It's like EA is the dealer and the modders are the enabling family - even though it's the dealer causing all this damage, the second the family stops enabling the addict, the addict lashes out at THEM. Although the modders essentially carry the entire Simming community, they receive some of the worst backlash, even though they have less power comparatively. And the addiction also explains why so many Simmers accept bare-minimum behavior - addicts are not picky about where, how, or in what way they get their products... and when they're desperate, they def dgaf about the quality. I also think there's an undercurrent of religious social conditioning reinforcing certain behaviors, tbh, but that's another story. It's crazy to witness...

To be fair, some of the earlier packs were still good; not great, but good. Packs like City Living and Seasons did really add to the experience and I wouldn't say I regret buying those, because of the fun I've had with them. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself for buying some of the early packs (cause certain others were bad back then already) The later packs though, since 2019-2020ish and especially when they started with Kits, are basically all packs that are not worth the money. I bought High School years after a long while of not buying any packs and that for me was the true wake up call to never buy any Sims 4 DLC again, because it simply isn't worth the money. I cannot understand how people are willing to forkover €40/regional equivalent for something so lackluster; especially because there's plenty of other games you can buy for that money!

I think you do have a right to complain if you have all the packs. Like consider this... if you've bought all EA's crap, you've done exactly what they want you to do, right? You've been a super loyal customer. It's pretty wild that you 'should' expect to be punished for that. Edit: What I DON'T understand is how everyone can, as you say, experience pack after pack being broken on release and half of the time never fixed, and then STILL get super excited when a new pack is announced? Everyone should know by now to curb their enthusiasm for when we can see that the pack works, and that it actually is decent. Their trailers are 88% of the time (source: trust me bro, and rough estimation from experience) simply not what playing the pack is like. Those trailers are just the concept, not the actual game. Even if the concept is cool, that's not what you're likely to get to play.

...I truly think that this behavior is indicative of a huge underlying societal problem - I think many Simmers engage in escapism behavior, and think a number of them/us are addicted to the escapism. Someone else commented that it seems like people are moreso addicted to the "hype" of the release, rather than the actual release, particularly because the actual releases are subpar, so the dopamine can't actually last. I think this makes sense because of the correlation between cozy gamers and mobile phone gamers - many of the players are the same crop of people that got addicted to facebook, and then mobile games, which would make sense as to why EA is trying to exploit the mobile gaming algorithm/format to essentially farm money out of the player base. I think that the people's addiction is one of the root causes as to why the quality of the Sims has gone down so much. I agree that players ARE being exploited. I also think the decrease in quality is symptomatic both of the American identity of hyperconsumerism and corporate greed, BUT I think this accept-whatever sheep-like mentality letting companies get away with it, stems from, hear me out, the deep rooted Puritanism in American culture. This attitude is very much "you'll take whatever you get and be glad for it because you aren't deserving of anything at all, you SINNER." I know it sounds strange, but this behavior, imho is truly at the root of so much dysfunction within American society (though not exclusively) - you find this mentality in toxic relationships, toxic families, toxic friendships, even toxic work environments - where people are constantly accepting terrible conditions that they're unhappy with, but they can't find it in themselves to leave. Honestly speaking, these people need help, but it's deeper than just the game... if love to what others think (if you read all this, that is 😅)
@naediggs4816Ай бұрын
I also think the weird puritan undertone explains this weird/crazy/entitled attitude towards CC/mod creators too. There's obviously a power difference between EA and the modding community - weird puritanism accounts for why so many Simmers show, like deference and almost a worshipper attitude towards EA. It's like EA is the dealer and the modders are the enabling family - even though it's the dealer causing all this damage, the second the family stops enabling the addict, the addict lashes out at THEM. It's crazy to witness...
@matthewvp850729 күн бұрын
I 💯 agree with you. I definitely believe that the American hyper individualism, which created the American hyper consumerist capitalism model, has its roots in puritanism. there was a breaking down of the community-based model and a glorification of hard work over else. And the saddest part is that it's been enforced on the rest of the world, and we see it breaking down the pre-existing community cultures there

@matthewvp8507 omg, yes, YES, EXACTLY!!! I think there is SUCH a larger discussion to be had, and I think escapism is running as rampantly as it is due to societal breakdown and intolerable social circumstances. I wish we could have like a live talk on it, but that Puritanism, the remnants olde English classism/caste system, hyper individualism, and all this other stuff is RUINING us. I see it occurring in other parts of the world too, which is the problem I have with globalism... would love to hear more thoughts on this, almost no one talks about it 😭

I feel like one reason it has gotten this bad is that the original release of the game was so bare bones and broken and was in such a constant need for updates, it began to prime people that while there were bugs, the team was working on them. The excuse was that the game was missing a lot of features from earlier games in order for the game to run easier. And the first few packs weren’t as buggy. But as the packs began to get buggy, people were invested and the team was supposedly trying to fix and patch packs, so the community was more forgiving. But it has gotten to a point where packs are so barebones and buggy that they aren’t worth it and EA has used up all of the community’s goodwill with their false promises.

I did everything there was to do in StrangerVille in a matter of hours. I did everything there was to do with Get Together, Get To Work, City Living, etc in 1-2 days max. Snowy Escape? Skiing. It feels like EA is just selling everything piecemeal, though this isn't exclusive to the sims franchise and is a wider trend in gaming in general where previously larger content gets sold in smaller but more expensive parts or even microtransactions. Which the sims 3 had tbh, but I'd rather have the points shop back than subpar dlc where you buy dlc for your dlc 😭 And let's be honest, the lag/game crashes were a problem even in sims 3 when you had all the dlc. Especially with the island paradise pack. It's just even more insulting now since they knew it was already a problem previously and didn't prevent it in the sequel. Though I hear the s4 engine sucks balls and that might be the cause, which makes the lack of a sims 5 even worse.

Sims 4 has problems, but some of these aren’t brand new. You could make sims 3 thousands of dollars as well if you did store content at time of release. Ea is a predatory company, but they’ve always used the community to fix things. Even in s3 they would recommend not to play every pack. It’s a bit better now because we all have superior computers, but none of them are flawless. To me the most offensive thing about sims 4 is the ai. The queue is always broken. I actually deleted the sims 4 and never looking back. Wasted so much money on a game that gets boring/bugs is very ridiculous! I’m much happier person switching back to the sims 3 ❤ 😊

Same here! I mainly play the sims 2 and 3, much better gameplay experience than the sims 4

I uninstalled TS4 when For Rent was announced and I'm proud to say I've stuck to that decision so far. It just got to be too excessive, and even with all of that DLC, I still wasn't enjoying the game... I'm honestly having way more fun playing TS2 and TS3

i would like to recommend, if yall haven't seen them to read the comments on The Sims 4's community posts. theyre seeing the issues, they just don't care. people arent excited, just the content creators getting gifted or paid by EA to increase hype are what youre seeing. people arent happy with the game, period, honestly

my game was also broken for a couple months, even without buying the most recent packs. I love this game (mostly because of mods tbh), and Im sure I will continue to play for years to come. as far as giving more of my money to EA, I think Im done with that. this last break was the last straw for me. I had to delete one of my long running save files that was corrupted and delete all of my gallery just to get it to run again without crashing every 5 seconds. (and yes, I did remove/ update mods and cc, delete cache, EVERYTHING). how do they justify charging literally thousands for subpar content/ a broken game?? they are sitting on piles of cash but there isnt room in the budget to make the game RUN apparently!!

@Malcolm This whole video reminds me of a huge, never-ending argument I had with a sim 4 stan on reddit. Where I explained her why InZoi is a better game than sims 4 and why sims 4 does NOT add a color wheel. In a nutshell because EA could lose their exploit, If they ever get a color wheel out, player creations would be better than EA's dlc. Then EA would have no excuse to release more useless kits and recolors, They would lose that money that is exploiting the players on purpose. But NO.. this girl started to defend EA, downvote me and say that a color wheel is not needed at all, that she don't want the game feel overconsuming, that it would take much longer to create things. Dumbest comments. Seriously i had to stop responding her, Because all the good things he said could make the game better, she easily rejected, defend EA, and then make fun of the really passionate simmers. who take the game so seriously and complain for "a game"

I just wait for packs to go to 50% off, I really don't care if I need to wait a year it's just the sims lol

Thank you!! I am so glad you made this video. I don't understand the sims communities obsession with buying packs they KNOW are overpriced and broken. That's why It is just better to just use the Anadius Sims 4 updater instead. Save your money and just get all the content as an endless free demo. Works better too.
