One of my favorites, a semi-cult classic that definitely got overlooked when it came out in 1991, Defending Your Life is a lovely movie well worth your time.
Defending Your Life stars Albert Brooks, Meryl Streep, and Rip Torn. It's an odd but nice look at the afterlife. Enjoy this summary.

"if you're going to go back to keep getting better, but you don't remember anything from before, how do you improve?" i think you remember subconsciously.

I agree subconscious.. but I think there is a reason why we do not remember past lives.. probably because we all have ptsd from all the death we had to deal with would be a lot worse.. Also they probably do not allow psychopaths to come through either.. it makes sense with what he was saying ... like he said if use more than 5% which as a child I did not want to be on earth.. therefore I defended a child when i was a child from being bullied on a playground.. I was definitely not wanting to be on earth... and upset about children starving in Africa when I was a child.. saying why is this happening?? Why are there so many rich people but people starving on the streets and homeless and starving people etc etc etc... Why?? Why do we have wars?? because of fears?? yes because people are afraid of not having enough if their rich or afraid of other people coming into their country ?? Fear is keeping Republicans republicans correct?? I remember as child thinking this place sucks and it's boring..

Really good review. I love this movie also even more so now than I did originally. Because, I believe fear is the main thing holding us back. Fear is the mind killer, the little death... Fear is the freight train coming at you on the tracks you standing there. Let fear run right through you, and when you turn and look and fear is gone only you remain.

I just quoted this the other day: “so I’m on trial for my life?!?” “Well, in the first place, we don’t like to call it a trial……and in the second place, yes.” Definitely ranks as one of my most favorite under-rated films of all-time as well. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for this video about Defending Your Life -- I love this movie and have enjoyed watching it several times over the years. I have many favorite scenes and lines in this film, and I think you make some great observations and points about the movie. I think Albert Brooks is a genius, and I think everyone's acting in this movie is top notch. I love Michael Gore's music score, and I think it's exactly spot-on for the film. I've always disagreed with a couple of the things Brooks used as examples of fear (i.e., when his character, Daniel, didn't buy a certain stock, to me it seemed because he truly believed it was simply bad stock, not because he was afraid - and I still don't quite understand why Brooks had the trial prosecutor show the montage of silly physical mishaps, as they just seem to be various ridiculous endeavors of Daniel's which had nothing to do with being fear-based), but I absolutely do agree that Daniel's resistance to moving forward in his relationship with Julia was a very good and poignant example of his fear, and, like you, I really love the ending of the movie. And I agree that Shirley MacLaine's cameo is hilarious! Again, thanks. It's always great to know others appreciate this movie.

Thanks, Drunken Yoda. I think I'll give this a view. Albert Brooks definitely knows how to play that niche character where he's someone not generally likeable (Broadcast News) but you find yourself rooting for him.

I agree with the last of what was said on this movie.. if we are in a Sim reality like Quantum Gravity Research Group is suggesting then it's possible this could be a scenario where we are watching what everyone does! If people are good or not exactly they do not want psychopaths but only brave nice people from earth into the next reality! Most likely! Glad for that at least! As a child I did not want to be on earth and defended a child who was being bullied..

You say Albert Brooks wanted to present a vision of the after-life that was not religious. But did you know the Bible says that “each of us will give an account of ourselves to God” (Romans 14:12), so in many ways there is an important tenet of the Christian faith at the heart of this movie. I think that is another reason “Defending Your Life” is so good: it rings true.

Yes I see your point. But I think for your average viewer this movie comes across areligious
@ebinny
@ebinny Жыл бұрын
I’m not contesting your point, but keep in mind that Albert Brooks is Jewish. Obviously, I can’t speak for him, but Jews don’t believe in purgatory, and don’t share the same views as Christians about the after life. Brooks did a brilliant job of stripping away all and any religious beliefs in the movie, making it far more relatable and relevant. It’s hilariously philosophical and speaks to everyone. I’ve seen it many times and always find something novel that I overlooked previously. Great, film-never disappoints.

I love the movie, but I was always confused why Julia's character would leave the story with Daniel to go to some off-screen party with her lawyer that the viewer never sees. To me, this side plot didn't add anything to the story and took away precious Daniel and Julia time. That said I can watch this film over and over again. Very enjoyable.

VERY, VERY, VERY COOL and good, but NOT like the "other" video, which also covers similar territory, which, although unusual for me to do so, I also LIKED but the other video was 1(one) shorter, and two(2) involved some personal shots as to keep the viewer MORE engaged!! So, like the flick itself, you, "daniel," were good, but, like EVERYBODY, you could do better!!!! Good job, but NOT great! Keep it up, but, as ALWAYS, as EVERYBODY can, keep trying to get "better!" Dan aka ryan 😇😇😇😇
