This made me smile. It shows how beautiful yet technical music is. How you can transform something muddy and make it crystal. It shows the main reason why I love music. Amazing lesson. That final bit with moving the third in the chord up an octave ended the lesson perfectly.

Thank you very much for posting this. I've been searching different videos to understand what overtone series are. By far this is the clearest explanation of all.

the problem with the lowest notes is that they are basicly overtones only. there will be close to or equal to no diference hearing them on speakers rollig off at 50Hz and to ones rolling off at 20Hz

Hi David, thanks for this great video. I have a question: if the string vibrates at its fundamental frequency plus the partials simultaneously, such that the string would be infinitely divided in shorter and shorter parts, and considering that the series is progressively created due to wave interference, do we end up in some sort of a Zenon paradox, in which an infinity of partials are "delivered" in a finite amount of time? Because however infinitesimal time is needed for the creation of each overtone, that time still exists and it tends to exist ad infinitum if we try to imagine the creation of an infinite spectrum. Or is the infinity of overtones just theoretical? Thanks!

syrachify Sorry for taking so long getting back to you with your question. When a string is caused to vibrate it starts off vibrating in 1/2, then,1/3, then 1/4 etc. By using electronic scoping we generally only track it to its 12th partial since our "western music" is based on the 12 tone system. Interestingly, at the 13th partial where the tonic is repeated, it is out 80 / over/ 81. Proving "Mother Nature" never repeats herself.
