"witches eating babies is so 1693" might be a reference to the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus, as the opening of that film is set in 1693, and the Sandersons' MO is to drain the life force of children

This was the episode where the fandom officially fell in love with Amity. Also on a side note. 3:49 we’ve met that kid’s dad. It’s Warden Wrath, the bad guy from episode one who had a crush on Eda.

Time for the character dynamics to _really_ start developing! Let's get stuck in: - Starting as we always do: *A WITCH L* - Personally, I question the judgment of anyone who asks Edalyn Clawthorne, Public Enemy Number One, to watch over a kid for any length of time. I ain't gonna _argue_ with the decision, but the babysitting market must be _really_ bleak to be asking _her._ - Obligatory cameo by Dana's in-universe representative: check! - The Bonesborough Public Library honestly seems like the kind of place I'd have spent most of my time when I was Luz's age. Libraries have long been a safe haven from the chaos and clutter of daily life -- I spent my free periods in my high school's library pretty much every day for four years, and even managed to convince the librarians to let me take my lunch there from junior year onwards once they'd gotten to know me. (Plus, I was an avid bookworm back then. Less so nowadays, though.) - The longer the series spends with Amity, the more nuance we get to see. She may have brushed off the story-time activity as just being "for extra credit" (and it could very well be), but it's hard to mistake the genuine enthusiasm and joy on her face as she shared her love of reading with those kids. (The series you were struggling to recall the name of was _The Amazing World of Gumball,_ by the way -- and yeah, I can see the similarity between Otabin and Richard.) - Braxas is adorable. (You've already met his father, incidentally -- it comes up later, so I'll leave it at that for now.) - Introducing Edric and Emira Blight, Amity's older twin siblings, voiced by Ryan O'Flanagan and Erica Lindbeck respectively (yes, Loona's VA!) -- part-time troublemakers around both the school and the town, though like the rest of the supporting cast, they _do_ have sides to them that you'll see as we go. - Yeah, in Eda's defense, I'm not the biggest fan of infants either. I'm decent with kids, provided they're old enough to understand me when I talk to them, but I don't think I really have the temperament for the nonverbal age range. - Not sure if libraries would be _improved_ by the addition of magical snowball fights, but it'd be easier to persuade kids to read if the books came to life in their hands like that. I'm honestly surprised the BPL staff don't have a special event set up for the Wailing Star! - The dig at the Disney Channel was pretty good, and arguably deserved. At this point in the show's run, they were still hovering over Dana to make sure her show wasn't going places and doing things that the socially conservative suits up in C-suite would find objectionable -- the first cour of the season was played fairly safe as a consequence, but once that trial period ended, Dana was quick to start popping monocles with the directions she took the story! - I didn't have any older siblings growing up, and nor was I the kind of older sibling who'd make life harder for my kid sister (at least not _intentionally),_ but I've heard people talk about how the dynamic between Ed, Em and Amity is pretty close to how their _own_ siblings would behave towards them. I _do_ think they crossed a few lines in this episode, but they make efforts to make amends in future appearances, so _that's_ good. - You've called a lot of Amity's unseen motivations before now, but the diary entries confirmed that Amity's frosty demeanor was mostly just a facade to project strength in the ruthless social environment she lives in -- but behind that facade, she's as big of a nerd as Luz is! - The monstrous Otabin's voice was provided by the inimitable Fred Tatasciore. No disrespect to Luz, but I'd say _Fred_ does the better monster voices! (Several other monster VAs pop up throughout the series, including Dee Bradley Baker, who provided the vocal effects for Owl Beast Eda -- I took a _lot_ of notes on their performance styles watching the shows they worked on growing up!) - Dunno if mortal peril is the _best_ way to foster interpersonal bonds, but I suppose it worked in this case! Luz's exuberant personality has its own quirky charm, and being stuck in the same situation together allowed Amity to see that -- it's not an instant friendship like with Willow and Gus, but it's the start of something! - The Bat Queen, voiced by Isabella Rossellini, is definitely one of the more striking characters in the series -- equal parts _yokai_ and eastern European mythic figure, I'd say. She appears a couple more times across the series. - There's a lot of things you touched on in your post-episode analysis and speculation that'll be focused on later, so I don't want to say too much. Just keep your eyes and ears open as the series progresses!

Crikey! Just consider the home life that would result in the Blight kids. I'm sorry, but Luz should have her Azura fan card revoked. She had access to Amity's Azura books, why make herself into a cheap knock-off when she could have had 4 of the real deal ??? Do not ask questions you do not want answered, ESPECIALLY ABOUT HOOTY! Dread it, run from it, destiny arrives all the same. And Eda can't escape her destiny... becoming a mom.
