I will never understand why someone who hates fish would open a seafood restaurant. Just goes to show: If you don’t have passion for the craft, you won’t make quality products
@CrankyCat783 ай бұрын
He probably had the idea for a restaurant first and thought or was told that a seafood restaurant by the water would be a comfortable money-spinner. You can tell by the decor - which would have suited a very specific type of restaurant, like some exclusive supper club, and the fact he didn't understand fish, seafood or what a seaside restaurant should look and feel like. I've seen it before - I remember a guy wanted to be a horse trainer but didn't want to ride and the people running the college course he was on had to explain why he had to know how to ride if he wanted to train racehorses, or the swordsmith that didn't practise the martial art that his swords were made for and was convinced at middle age to train himself. I have seen some vegetarians cook amazing meat dishes, but at least they have understood the science and principles first, and usually get a non-vegetarian to do their tastings while cooking.

It's a lot more common than you'd think. Ask any line cook at a chain/small town restaurant what they think about the food they make. Guarantee at least half of them refuse to eat there unless it's a (free) staff meal.

As a local of the Brighton area, the "it's hard to get fish in Brighton" line always killed me. You could literally drive 20 minutes west to Worthing and get fish from local fishermen, not to mention there were several fishmongers in Brighton and Hove, as well as the fish market Gordon took them to. Also I think the art was from a local artist, I remember going around a local gallery around the time of the episode and seeing a bunch of Jackson Pollock-esque paintings which are similar to the ones in Ruby Tates, didn't see any with knickers though lol. Also I feel like becoming a higher class chippy was a bad idea for long term success, Brighton has loads of fish restaurants and loads of chip shops, it really didn't need an in-between, I think it would have done a lot better just as a normal restaurant.

I can't recommend The Apple enough. It's absolutely terrible, but it's really easy to watch. One of those rare so-bad-it's-compelling films. Imagine Rocky Horror Picture Show, but funded by televangelists and directed by someone who forgot who funded it. God shows up in a Cadillac at one point. It's really something.

Allen opening up a fish restaurant despite hating fish is like me opening up a BBQ joint or steakhouse despite not liking barbecue(I’m the odd one out in my bbq loving family) or red meat in general(I just can’t tolerate most red meat due to my taste buds).
