How bad was the 1988 season for the Green Bay Packers? Well, prior to week 6 and a game against the New England Patriots, head coach Lindy Infante was so resigned to the fact that his 0-5 team would not win a single game that he completely gave up on his goal for the team to win one game. Seriously

Lindy Infante is an example of a guy who was far better suited to being a coordinator than a head coach. He's kind of a lesser version of Rich Kotite in that way.

This is very similar to what happened a decade later in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers. To inspire the fan base & the players in their battle against relegation, Blackburn owner Jack Walker got on the PA system prior to their match vs Man United that he would buy the fans & the players a beer & soda (for the kid supporters) if they somehow beat them. Before I go further, I should point out that Man United would go on to win the treble (Premier League, FA Cup & the Champions League) that season. As for how the match vs Man United turned out, it did not end well for Blackburn as they lost 3-2 to Man United with Dwight Yorke scoring a hat trick. However like Lindy Infante, Jack Walker still bought the beer & soda for the players & fans which cost the club 8000 pounds or $10,000. Blackburn would be officially relegated the following week when they drew with Chelsea.

Even taking themselves out of the Troy Aikman sweepstakes for 1989 they could have taken any one of 3 Hall of Famers right after: Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders (no relation), or Derrick Thomas. Instead, they took one of the biggest busts in NFL history with Tony Mandarich. While the Packers did contain Barry Sanders in the playoffs (twice!) who knows if either defender would have made the Packers the team of the '90s, especially after Reggie White came on board in 1993?

Exhibit A as to why it's so stupid for a horrible team to suddenly decide to start winning with 2-3 games left. I absolutely HATE how players for a team like that suddenly start yammering about pride. If you had any pride you wouldn't be so horrible going into the last few games to begin with!

Once a player from the Packers ordered a hot dog from a vendor during a game. He was suspended for a couple games and one of the coaches quit. Another ten like thirty years later was busted sharing some hot dogs by the camera crew and John Madden did some squiggly lines and all that stuff. They were all fined

You say that this was a really bad team. However, they beat the Vikings twice this season, both times very decisively (34-14 in Minnesota and 18-6 at home). This was one of the most shocking sweeps I have ever seen, and perhaps one you can discuss in another video. If the Vikings had won just one of those games, and all other games went the same, they would have home field advantage in the playoffs. Who knows what butterfly effect that would have had. Instead, they had to play the wild card, and then go to San Francisco, who would get them back after the Vikings beat them the year before.

Nice guy, lousy coach. When his Packers teams managed to win, it was despite him, not because of him. Same thing later in Indy. My final straw with him was when he clearly benched some players in '91 (or was it '90?) just because. Real petty.
@DolFan316
@DolFan316 Ай бұрын
The donuts also worked the next game, as they beat the Vikings by 20. In fact, even ater losing the next game, the '88 Packers had a +8 point differential after 8 games despite starting 0-5.
@mgb4692

And yet the Packers ended up sort of changing NFL history by sweeping the Vikings, who would have had home field if they'd won one of those two games. The Niners probably still would have beat them at the Metrodome, but it'd be close enough that they wouldn't have traded their next five years of relevancy for Herschel Walker

Those Packers seemed to shoot their wad in this game and their game in Minneapolis from a scoring standpoint. After those 2 games, they couldn't score more than 18 points in a game until their season finale, a road win over the then-Phoenix Cardinals. Of their 3 shutout losses (all on the road) in the interim, 2 of them happened in consecutive games.
