Part Two: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5WaZp6om7NmiKs
Join me for a deep dive into the three animated comedies created by Roger Black and Waco O'Guin. It's not just a story of three extremely bad shows... although all three shows are extremely bad.

Content Warning:
This video shows clips of crude humour that include jokes that degrade people for characteristics such as appearance, race, gender, and sexuality. Brief clips are also shown of cartoon violence. There are also frequent incest references.
Spoiler Warning:
Part one contains minor spoilers for Archer season 3. Part two contains major spoilers for Paradise PD's plot developments in seasons 1 - 2. Part three contains minor spoilers for Fresh Meat season 3. Farzar goes unspoiled throughout all three parts. Brickleberry resets the status quo after every episode so there are no major plot developments to spoil, however several individual episodes have their stories spoiled. That being said though if you care about Brickleberry, Paradise PD, or Farzar spoilers something's gone wrong.

As far as I understand it, a major appeal of the shows is imagining how "triggered" the "snowflakes" *would* be if they saw this. So, after watching the show for hours, chuckling to themselves about how much the "snowflakes would hate this", any criticism of the show triggers that familiar brain pathway, and they think they've found that snowflake that hates the show regardless of the criticism's content.

i have a theory that a lot of people who love shows like this with such incredibly simplistic and predictable humor enjoy the fact that they always know whats coming, because it makes them feel smart or funny when what they expect to happen, actually happens. then when other people dont like it, they resort to insulting them because they take it personally. they have used their enjoyment of the show as a way to prove to themselves that they are clever or have an exceptionally comedic mind, so when other people hate on it they just dont "get" it. sounds like a bummer way to consume media but to each their own lol

One of the saddest thing about Farzar is you can see little tiny pieces of a better show buried in there. Val and Mal have a really cool design and concept, the He-Man parody opening was neat, and there's some genuine visual imagination on display in some of the settings. You could make a really good show out of some of this stuff! But of course, why should Black and O'Guin even bother trying to make a GOOD show, if networks are willing to just give them checks forever for making... these shows?

Rewatched this, and it occurred to me that the reason that Fichael isn't mixed race maybe isn't because the writers forgot, but perhaps is because he's adopted, since the queen was clearly already elderly when she got married, and would definitely be post-menopausal I then realised that these writers do not seem like the type of people who understand female anatomy well enough to consider that she would have gone through menopause I then realised I'd almost certainly spent more time thinking about Fichael's design than the writers had at this point

Damn your right! something even more interesting that jay kinda alluded to but didn't outright say: pacing and story buildup are genuinely 2 of the hardest things to get correct in writing, especially in comedy, as well as the easiest thing to truly fuck up. while brickleberry's characters, jokes, and animation style all suck story buildup and pacing within that world and context genuinely are the things it did the best by miles, again mostly because everything else was horrible. but put that pacing and buildup jay mentioned in otherwise good stories that struggle with pacing and it's usually A to S tier just from the better buildup.

There's an art to edgy or dark humor. I think a lot of people who work on adult animated comedy shows understand that other shows had controversial or darker elements, but don't always really get the idea that the gross, edgy, dark, etc. elements aren't the comedy by themselves. It's not that those things can't be funny, it's that just presenting something fucked up isn't inherently funny on its own. You still need to actually craft a joke around it.
@michaeliv284

An example of good dark humour comes from early Spongebob, the bit where Mr Krabs asked about *Mr* Puff, then we see a blowfish light. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Brickleberry. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of advanced bioscience most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Malloy's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Brickleberry truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Steve's incredibly deformed penis, which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Waco O' Guinn and Roger Black's collective geniuses unfold themselves on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Malloy tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

Farzar is the anti-Futurama. They're both animated sci-fi sitcoms that are the sister show to an older, more well-known show. However Futurama has a clearly distinct identity and cast from the Simpsons and the setting allow different jokes and storylines from the Simpsons Farzar meanwhile is practically a xerox of a xerox in its jokes, characters and setting with what differences there are window dressings Oh yeah, and both The Simpsons and Futurama actually have a functioning heart, brain and funny bone

The Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared series is a perfect example of this. The first episode “Jobs” has moments of shock/gore in it, but not only are they spread throughout the episode, but they’re all used in different ways to tell the joke. Like the scene at the end where Yellow Guy gets his hand mangled in a machine was not only well foreshadowed in the episode, but it plays off your expectations as despite the rest of the background characters preparing for an accident to happen their whole lives, they, are actually overjoyed when it finally does as it “reminds them they’re not in an accident” and “makes them feel so alive!” And cheering yellow guy on. We then also have the boss who when prompted to “do something”, fires the yellow guy as its basically the only thing he knows how to do. It takes the shock and violence of the hand mangling, and not only is it so extreme it catches you off guard, but it finds ways to build upon and subvert the situation with the rest of the cast too

It's what I call "best movie ever syndrome", essentially if you ask several people to make a movie pitch and there are no rules or restrictions, and they are trying to make the greatest movie of all time, people will tend to all make the same movie. It'll have Santa Claus riding a unicorn through time and explosions everywhere, and tons of references to modern pop culture icons (like popular music 'artists' or Iron Man or something). In the end its a messy story with every cool or "lol so random" element thrown in haphazardly. Meanwhile if you ask people to make the best movie ever, but have rules and guidelines to follow, people will tend to be more creative and more likely to make movies distinct from each other. What I'm getting at is the unlimited element of the sci-fi genre makes Farzar far more creatively bankrupt. They don't have to be people with jobs, they could be any type of creature you could ever conceive, so of course its poo people. Even the banana people are a clear sign of this as bananas are the most commonly anthropomorphized fruit (think of the peanut butter jelly meme from the early years of KZbin with the dancing banana, or more recently the Minions obsession with bananas while also somewhat resembling stubby bananas themselves, I'm sure there is more examples).

@@Eyclonus Too much weird and it transcends weird and becomes normal because it's what youd expect. That is the biggest issue with adult comedy shows rn outside of just not being funny. Honestly I think to balance this out the best thing to do is to make time for battling aliens or expanding on your science and it's rules, but also spend time fleshing out the characters. It doesn't matter if I can't relate to the character's situation if who they are at heart is relatable. I can't 100% relate to the situation of characters in star trek or star wars but I CAN relate to their emotions because at the end of the day who they are, are people. Sadly these shows would much rather have caricatures and not characters with any emotional weight

The thing that bothers me with the whole swarm of people going 'Oh, you don't like the show? You're just too sensitive' is that there are much better offensive jokes out there! Like one of my favourite comedians, Frankie Boyle, has a series of jokes in one of his stand up specials about a fictional 'Micheal Jackson' Children's Hospital' that keeps going more and more depraved. For context, the joke starts with Frankie talking about a recording of the late Jackson talking about the hospital while drugged out of his mind and Frankie says "I don't even think that was Micheal's voice there, I think it was the pedophile demon inside of him' and just goes from there for five or so minutes Meanwhile with this show...hee hoo, shit and penithes are funnie, let's cram as much of both into a show as humanly possible.
