It was just giving you a clue (the 44) to confirm the number on the painting was what you needed but you still needed to know what the number was for brown horn

It felt like the flashlight was really hard to use here - any slight deviation in the aim point makes it ineffective, which is why you thought the Taken were absorbing multiple charges. I think console has some aim assist on it, and maybe the PC version got left behind a bit in UX.
