HOUSE TOUR TIME!
We are always looking for more great homes to share with our followers. We think that it can give you a better sense of what it's like to live on this beautiful island and some of it's history, too. Plus, if you're home renovation buffs like we are, you'll love looking inside!
Today we are sharing a tour of a fantastic palazzo in Piedimonte Etneo in Sicily. This palazzo is just down the street from ours and is one of the houses we considered buying! In the small world that is Sicily, we found out that this house was owned by the father-in-law of one of my new friends. I love this about Sicily. We wanted to take a moment to share what other palazzos look like here and also make the video available for anyone who might be interested in purchasing this gem.
The seller of this casa was actually once a young boy living here and he shared many fun tidbits of life so long ago. I felt so honored to get the tour and hear the stories. The house is about 770 msq (8288 sqft) all together and 590 msq (6350 sqft). It was built around 1830 and was definitely a special place even back then. There is an internal courtyard and a lot of ground floor space that has amazing possibilities. The tour today ( and the property currently for sale at this time) only includes part of the house. The rest of the palazzo, which I would say is about a third of the palazzo is owned or used by commercial businesses on the ground floor and resident on the second floor. The roof was replaced with the italian superbonus very recently. The ceilings are high, beautiful and only need a little cosmetic touches.
The building was last used as a laboratory (medical I believe) and will need some of those items reversed to make this back into a lovely home. This includes changing out lighting (which means looking for antique chandeliers-my favorite sport!), removing some sinks and my suggestion would be to remove the two commercial bathrooms and return that space back into a kitchen with the dining room adjacent. I'd add a door to the existing back terrace that overlooks the garden, which will love a good couple of days in the hands of a competent gardener (I have a good one to recommend!) If you like the Sicilian lifestyle because you like to be out-of-doors, then definitely catch the end of the video where I share some grand ideas of what can be done in the courtyard. If you talked to Matt you would think the inside is the best part, if you talk to me, I would tell you my dreams for the first floor spaces! If stairs aren't your favorite, I would mention that we considered putting in a birdcage elevator in the center of the staircase for just this reason. It would be an easy addition, I think.
If you're interested in actually seeing this house in person, please email us at ciao@ourplaceinsicily.com or you can leave a comment and we'll get you in contact with the listing agent (who happens to be the genius who helped us find our palazzo!) Bonus, he speaks English!
For the rest of the dreamers, please share your favorite parts of the tour and let us know if you'd like to see inside more places (for sale or not!) I'd love an excuse to ask for a tour!

We're Jenn and Matt and we bought a 31 room abandoned palazzo on the slopes of a volcano in Sicily. Join us for this restoration journey as we bring it back to life with the help of many, many wonderful Sicilians and others from around the globe. It's a big project but we're excited to bring this beautiful home back to life as our new home in Piedimonte Etneo, Sicily and to be able to share it with the local community.
