Need to measure some common angles? Can't find your protractor? Fret no more! For all your common angles, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 90 degrees, a handy protractor is just a square sheet of paper away.

You can check your paper really IS square by folding it diagonally from the corners and making sure the edges on both sides line up. So with that you can make a protractor from any old bit of paper. I was wondering how Pythagoras and the like did all their stuff without the advantage of modern manufacturing and I can imagine they'd work things like this out to create their own tools using principles of geometry, which would be clear to them cos they were geniuses who worked with angles all day. How to invent geometry from nothing! Or at least how to measure the geometry to make sure you've got it right...
