The more I watch, the more I’m convinced the F4 Phantom is the single most beautiful and striking (no pun intended) object ever made by man. Every angle reveals new and interesting curves and proportions…and each new view and angle is as or more stunning than the last.

The 301st Tactical Fighter Squadron is the last Squadron in the JASDF with F4 Phantoms. She's a great warrior, and they'll retire the F4 in 2021 so she's got a year left of service life left in her.

I've seen these majestic killers at RNAS Yeovilton in the 70's as I only lived 5 miles from the base and could here them light the fires and my dad would drive us to the edge of the main runway to watch them take off and land. A phantom on full afterburn as the sky gets darker is beautiful and the feeling is something you never forget. If war comes my way,let it be phantoms doing the work,I'd go happy!

I guess like your first love, the F-4 will always be my favorite fighter jet. They were just starting to take them out of service when I was in the Army in the early 80's. I love the F-14's, 15's, 16's and 18's, but the Phantom is just a bad lookin' plane. It definitely instills fear and respect. Looks like a flying shark....

Takes me back to the 80s and the Texas Air National Guard at Ellington Field Houston, TX.
The F-4 out-fought everything from that time period. Computer simulations have shown that the big engines of the Phantom gave it an advantage since it could control the pace of the fight, leaving and re-entering battle as desired. I have several F-4 books and each tells pretty good stories. My favorite ones are those with the best photography. Aviation books have provided me a much-needed escape from real life. When life was difficult I'd set up my easy chair with coffee, a desk lamp and a stack of books beside me. They kept me going during the hardest times and are the best investments I ever made. For my fellow bookies these are my 3 favorite books: - F-4 Phantom by Robert Prest - Scream of Eagles by Robert Wilcox - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson

Beautiful legendary fighter and I want it to remain operational for many more decades instead of wasting more money on that useless f35 that is too obsolete and expensive, and the same is true for Japan.
@justforever964 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but they don't run the military based on sentimental attachments. The F-4 is 70 years old. It costs a lot to keep it running. Even if the F-35 wasn't the best thing to buy, they could buy the F-16, or the Rafale or the Gripen, or more F-15s. There is zero good reason for spending tens of millions of dollars to keep flying the F-4, except to please the tiny minority of people who think the F-4 is really, REALLY cool. That's not how it works. And we shall see how the F-35 turns out. I too think they spend far, far to much on getting it to fly, and the whole idea was flawed to start with. But they have it working, finally, and it will probably be at least as good as any other fighter, all things considered. It would be stupid to abandon it now, twenty years and trillions of dollars later, just as we finally got it to work right. And no, the little niggling "problems" they keep reporting are not evidence of failure or "inherent design flaws", they are normal development issues.
