Probably the solution was a combination of all those ideas. Volcanism and meteor impacts producing CO2 layers, presence of ammonia that later became the nitrogen in our atmosphere, the sun having fluctuations in temperature and having more helium than usual. None of these factors being the answer alone, but in combination produce a result
