When I was at school (UK) in the early 70's I was obsessed with nice pens and my fave at the time was the Parker 45 Flighter with the gold clip. However, my school (Sandbach Grammar) wouldn't allow ball-pens and would only allow fountain pens. When I left school my father very kindly bought me a mirror finished Cross (USA) ball-pen which were super rare over here at that time. As he gave it to me he said "remember, it's not what you write with that matters, but what you write"......I've got that Cross pen in my pocket right now, 42 years later...!!!!!

At Foster's Grammar School, Dorset, in the 1970s we too had fountain pens that were filled by Quink ink in a somewhat messy process. In the library at University RHC they used to have a huge bottle of Quink for students to refill from. Always remember the pocket spills from fountain pens that could ruin a white shirt!

I have one from 2004. I used it everyday for about 11 years. I had it with me all times. I work on the railroad and for 7 of those years also drove tankers for two petroleum companies. Three jobs for 7 years and the one pen.The amount of writing I did with that pen, all the paperwork on the trucks, the customer tickets I had to fill out etc....plus every check I ever wrote during that period, shopping lists, you name it. Travelled with it on vacations. I wear them on the collar so any photos of me have that pen in it. I retired it to home use only. I had it so long now I’m attached to it. Bought two more Jotters around 2013. One red, one blue. Have quite a few refills, but that stainless steel one...we got some history man so now it’s safely in my WATCH drawer! The red and blue Jotters, those leave the house!

I've had Parkers (starting with a roller ball pen and then moving to a fountain pen which I used for most of my university exams and finally to jotters) since 2001. It's my go to brand for writing instruments. Sure it was "expensive" at 300 Indian rupees or 8$ in 2000s economy, but as a kid who was making his own money by age 15, this was a matter of pride to flaunt. Parker pen was for people who took writing seriously - like myself I suppose. 20 years down, I have a fleet of Parkers - fountain, roller and my favourite - the jotters. We don't have all the new designs in India, but the basic steel jotter costs 6$ here and is my every day carry.

Having studied in academia for over 13 years, and having tried lots of different pens, the Parker Jotter is absolutely my favorite. I write all my notes with it. I also love the Parker ink, in medium, as it seems to last a very long time per cartridge while being always reliable and properly visible in it's delivery. In fact, my notebooks that were written with other inks, before finding Parker, have faded considerably than anything since starting to use Parker.

8$? I wish. They're €20 in Europe unfortunately. Still worth it if you ask me, not expensive but not really cheap either. The regular jotter is €11 IMO Parker really is a good benchmark of a pen, comfortable dimensions, solid quality, not expensive, good looking, ubiquitous and nice ink.

My only gripe is the clip has that arrowhead looking point and it grabs on some random stuff and has gotten stuck on those. I think I lose it, but it's always hanging where it came off. Literally the only thing I can say bad about mine. For the price, it's hard to beat. Hope this helps. Get it for Grandpa regardless, he will love it and the gesture.

I love the Parker jotter, especially in brushed stainless - it's a bona-fide design classic, and looks a lot classier and more expensive than it actually is. That loud click is a design feature as far as I'm concerned - it's as distinctive as a Zippo lighter. My only real criticism is that it's not very grippy for extended periods of writing - I sometimes work scribing exam essays for disabled students, and for that I prefer something with a rubber grip section. But for general everyday use, the Jotter can't be beat IMHO.

I EDC a Jotter with a steel top and black plastic bottom. It's perfect for my office use. It looks nice and feels nice, but doesn't draw attention to itself. It's inexpensive enough that I wouldn't cry if it got up and walked away, but it's nice enough and unique enough that no one accidentally carries it away from where I lent it to them (usually my desk, some times a meeting room). I just had a conversation the other day with a coworker about how she had to keep walking around and fishing her G2s out of her supervisor's pencil cup.

Granted I don't hardcore use it but i have no other writing utensil that old. To me it's like a Tenacious or RAT1, nothing special or flashy but does just fine. I'm 48, have been using Jotters since primary school and I still do, but I must admit, as you rightfully observed, that the machining isn't great (anymore). This used to be different. It changed 'round the time they modified the top of the button from concave to convex. Since then, the text 'Parker, Made in France/USA/UK' (In my younger days USA used to be the most current here in Belgium, then later France. UK for Parker models other than the Jotter) has become hardly legible as well. Also, the threading has changed. This however for the better: Before the threading used to be very fine and would give problems with the non stainless steel models where the plastic threading would wear off pretty easily... But for 8 bucks...a winner! Keep up the good work Nick! Best regards
