There are a lot of people discussing cost. Most BJJ schools charge $125-$175/month. Jiu Jitsu is not something you can train once a month and benefit from; and you're not going to train hard for 2 years and reach black belt. It is a way of life and a transition in your thinking. The dues only seem high until you get immersed and your life begins changing. Your confidence and sense of security grow, your body can't help but get much healthier (BJJ will push your cardio), your perspective and social behaviors change. I've trained almost 3 years now and I'm happy to pay my dues to help keep the school open. At some point as a man, you have do take a stand and give yourself something. Life is always a race. A race to make money, help at home, answering to 10 different people. To anyone hesitating, I would say go for it. Connect with your inner warrior. Your body and mind want to fight. You'll never regret it.

Jeremy Zuther That's crazy, man I love America but I could not afford to train there, mine cost €5 per lesson. €65 a month for unlimited MMA, BJJ, wrestling , boxing and muay thai classes a month. There's 2 2hr BJJ classes a day. our trainer was the European BJJ Champ and is a professional fighter. It's not fair that they can justify that price. I would not be able to train if that was the rate over here! I live in Ireland.

Jeremy Zuther here's the thing about cost I agree it's worth it but most of the schools at least in my area charge about $220-$300 a month I believe I saw 1 in the 120 Range as well but here's what I thought was the ridiculous thing these schools that charge that much and it's only allows you to go twice a week and that's in the evening. I'm sorry but if any dojo charges that much they should be open 7 days a week and have both am and pm classes and every person should have unlimited access .
@PedalTheGlobe6 жыл бұрын
I cant believe people would even complain about that price. $175/month is not much in today's world. If an adult thinks that is a lot of money they are probably not working hard in other areas of their life. They likely lack the perseverance to make it 8-10 years to get a black belt. They also dont value or respect their coaches time to think they should work for chump change after dedicating their life to becoming an expert in something.

At the age of 46, I switched to the Gracie system. The problem with the other bjj schools I went to is that I kept getting injured. Torn ACL, dislocated shoulder, hernia operation, etc. The list went on and on. Gracie jiu jitsu is a lot safer, and you generally don't get injured unless you do something stupid.

I really love this way of training and teaching. For those who say they're not training due to money my suggestion is to speak to your professor & see what you can do if money is truly an issue. In most cases making an adjustment to our habits outside the dojo will free up whatever finances are needed to train. It's not a gym, jiujitsu creates healthy habits that will help us not only become a black belt in the martial arts but a black belt in life.

Truth to be told. BJJ is rife with injury. Literally everyone gets injured several times a year, and being in the sport for just a few months I already have gotten to know several people with permanent irreparable damage to their bodies, like eye damage, neck damage, knee damage, nerve damage, you name it. I have a sense that this is a huge contributing factor as to why people quit BJJ.

Rolling in BJJ is one of my favourite parts of the art. When paired with a great opponent who respects you and is willing to learn rather than win, it's probably the most fun of any martial art I've ever done. I always laugh when my opponent does something really clever, or I'm like "wow!" as I constantly impressed by the beasts on the mat. I seek to encourage that behaviour as it means I learn so much more, and we all have fun! And isn't that the goal?

this #1 reason, is probably the expense of the classes... people can barely get by these days. I am one of those people. I went the Gracie academy in Torrence for 2 weeks free, which was awesome. There was no way I could afford paying for those classes, even though it's a 1-2 hour drive from where I live, if it was cheaper I would go everyday. I wish they could incorporate a program where a certain percentage of their students are low income and qualify depending on their actual income, providing tax returns and a few months worth of pay checks. I know from first hand some of the best, hardest working people are stuck in the gutter. I am not trying to complain or ask for a handout... just offering my thoughts and opinions. God bless!

Not saying you're lazy, but try to be creative in the ways you can contribute to communities in general beyond money and you will find that we can circumvent the slavemasters' system of poverty.

In every gym i've ever trained its always with people that are great sparring partners that have your well being in mind however its always physical. The reason why the most effective combat system in the world has the highest drop out rate is because its real. A lot of people still want fantasy fighting systems or want to become effective at something quick. Jiu-jitsu takes a long time to get good at and takes a lot of dedication. Life gets on the way for most people. People who become higher level belts have demonstrated a substantial commitment to jiu-jitsu. Often times they've sacrificed other aspects of their life. Black belts have basically made jiu-jitsu their life, or at least a cornerstone of their life. Then you have injuries that snuff people out, which is a whole other issue.

+Mario U (emokid64) As I understand it, Renzo does not follow this curriculum. However, his own blue belt (and beyond) requirements won't be that far off. Rener and Ryron have lots of haters, but most people agree on certain techniques for beginners vs. advanced. For example, trap and roll and the Americana arm lock would be on most (if not all) blue belt requirements. Berimbolo and Reverse De La Worm Guard (that's not a joke) would likely NOT be on that early stage requirements. You should also check out Marcelo Garcia. I dont know about you, but if I see a video by either of them, I'm entirely hooked. I haven't trained with their academy because I dont think it would work for me, I need constant live training, but theres very little you could take from their approach in terms of breaking BJJ down and building a curriculum. Their achievements are pretty amazing when you consider the background, the fragmented nature of martial arts and other factors. Theres also no arguing with their ability as they are both world class black belts, despite not always conforming to the IBJJF mindset.

I think a lot of it is the instant gratification mindset in the West. If you tell someone it will take you 1-2 years as a white belt then 2+ years as a blue belt it won’t give them the fast dopamine hit they are looking. I find that people who start because they truly love the art and learning are the ones who stay. The belt chasers always quit. Outside of that sometimes life happens. People move, priorities change etc.

Many schools now have a green belt for adults so they don't feel discouraged from white to blue. It's so stupid that adults need that little "promotion" so they don't quit. I'm a blue and the way I see it is I'm too far into it to not get purple but once I get purple I'll be like I'm to far into it not to get the brown and the same thing for black. But when I'm a black belt it'll be apart me so I'll never stop lol and I don't want to ever stop bjj has changed my life many say it's so expensive but so is any hobby in life I don't eat out as much and also budget around my gym fees

Belts are pointless imo, just keep training and you will get better. Like anything in life.
@Mulberry20006 жыл бұрын
sienna three i do not agree, people need a reason to see they are progressing, and with out it then well they get discourage. i do not need belts to to see if i am good. I could not careless if i am good or bad. I just turn up and like to train, so i plod on, do the training and that is that. just because i d not need the green or next belt, i will not say its stupid if people want some acknowledgement of progression. After all they are paying a lot of money, if you do not like the green belt and then dump the belting system altogether. This means no white to black belt, just train for the hell of it. People will say how do i know if i am good enough, easy when you beat all the experience players, that is how. Note; belts are for how good you are at the moment and status. "Look i am a blue belt in BJJ" , they do not hand them out like toffee so i must be good, then you stop training or trying come back and get hammered by white belts.

Cost. Jiu jitsu is great but the cost can be very expensive. It’s not just the 150-200 a month cost. But it’s multiple gi’s, some places have belt testing fee, ibjjf or JJGF dues and tournament fees. Not to mention. Gas money too.

Toronto NEEDS a Gracie certified training centre! I cant believe no one has done it yet. This city is packed with BJJ gyms and most of them suck. The teaching structure is terrible. In fact, there is no structure. You walk in and the instructor just picks out of the air what is to be trained today. No other life skill is taught in such a haphazard method. If I lived in Southern California id train at Rener and Ryron's gym no questions asked regardless of cost. All other schools are going about it incorrectly and that is why people drop out. Im living proof of it. I am a teacher by trade and so I understand the importance of proper curriculum. Only Rener and Ryron got it right.

@Ferdinand Feiler but not in Toronto- even though its the 5th largest city in all of Canada, US and Mexico. There is a market here. Ive been waiting for years. Ive dropped out of every BJJ club in the city- they all suck. The unstructured, lack of curriculum is not the way to teach.

Is the master cycle curricular available on DVD, I live in Devon in the UK I goto a GYM in Paignton, BJJ is taught on a random basis in most places and means the tuition is unstructured which is frustrating for me - as an engineer I like to see structure and specifics in any system... it will comparatively take me years to become a blackbelt in BJJ on a random tuition basis.
@juandenz20088 жыл бұрын
Sadly I think you have to subscribe to their website to get the master cycle curriculum. I agree that most BJJ schools still follow a format of warmup, a few random moves and then roll like you are in the ADCC submission championships.

I trained bjj for 3 months quit at white belt 3 stripes. I was so happy to get my 3rd stripe because I could train 2 hours a day at the gym. I was happy to pay the 159.00 a month on a 10.25/hr job. I lost my job and had to stay paying my tuition. This coming year I’m going to start training from white belt no stripes again. My son has started 2 weeks ago.

I feel like Bjj has such a poor retention because a lot of people want instant gratification culture, people want everything now. And becoming any belt in Bjj is a long haul. Not demeaning other martial arts that don’t require as long to get a belt, they totally deserve whatever belt they are, but I feel like Bjj you can be a white or blue belt and if your good you can roll with most people and not get tapped.

Are the percentage of drop-outs in general (male AND female) or based just on the male students?
@qwertyuiop28953 жыл бұрын
There is not many females doing any martial arts. They don't count. So males mostly of course. For females dropout rate is even higher (plus lack of consistency, they train more "on and off" randomly). Concept of earning something by hard work for multiple years is biologically foreign to females, their life strategy is different ("red pill" knowledge, go figure). So they don't bother with activities like that.

@phuckfumassters2 жыл бұрын
Besides GU and maybe like minded schools on Rickson side majority of schools have no curriculum. It's completely sloppy and unorganized and you prove your getting better by beating others during rolling sessions and you advanced based on your professors 'feelings' of belt level. I trained at two schools and it was like this.
@John-qz2sy2 жыл бұрын
@@phuckfumassters that’s exactly it. We have a ton of white belts that are amazing. Some not so. Ive been a 3 stripe white belt for a year. Been at this gym for 2 years in October. I know I have surpassed my skills from a year ago. It’s annoying.
@MyZ0012 жыл бұрын
@@phuckfumassters Yea, I have 2 blackbelt friends to teach at different schools and it's exactly like this. They train that day whatever the hell they want to work on/share/etc., and they were promoted based on the coach's feeling on their performance and observed improvements. I have always had an uneasy feeling about belt promotion based on your ability to beat another person. Dahell kind of base line is that. That's good for rankings, but I don't see how that earns/hinders a belt.
@phuckfumassters2 жыл бұрын
@@MyZ001 that's why I have new found respect for Rener and Ryron and their GU methodology of learning. They have a curriculum and its listed out in black and white what you must know at your belt level before you can move up to the next belt(but also don't be obsessed by belt color). In order to test for purple you need to know 200+ techniques at 4 stripe blue belt. Every student has a 'score card' that list each skill they must know and trained in class 4 times before they can test. This is true accountability. If your weak in an area they will make you train the hell out of it. By purple belt when you count Gracie Combatives (1st stage) that's 72 total techniques and blue belt master cycle 4 stripe (2nd stage) that's 200+ techniques...you have learned, trained and know a total of *272* *Techniques* before getting your purple belt. Most typical BJJ schools don't have a curriculum and doesn't do it this way. They based there promotions on their 'feelings' about a student based on their bias. It could be 'length of time' at gym for one student, another could be based on athleticism, another is based on being a tournament competitor, another based on helping out at the gym, another based on being big and strong, another based on being a gym bully, etc. There is no standard which is part of the problem.

People who say its not good for self defense are speaking from a sport perspective. Yes sports jiu jitsu and old school jiu jitsu have two different approach. Of course no one wants to go to the ground but having the skill set to avoid the ground or quickly get off the ground and the ability to break a limb or do a blood choke is important to have if you are on the ground. doing mauy thai or boxing doesnt mean you will have a better chance either, because those same friends that can kick u in the head on the ground are the same friend that can jump you from different angles standing up take you down and kick you in the head still so to say its ineffective is quite dumb especially when jiu jitsu practitioners practice to get off the ground and escape. Throwing a punch can lead to a broken hand and if your hand is broke you definitely will not knock anyone out. so train as many arts as possible so you can be as prepared as possible and even than that may not work still but at least having some training in any art gives you a fighting chance. By the way I’m willing to bet that jiu jitsu practitioners who comes through Gracie Combatives following up with master cycles will do well and hold there own at a sports jiu jitsu tournament, however, Jiu-Jitsu practitioners who train jiu jitsu as a sport would probably have a hard time applying his or her game to the streets #gjj #judo #striking

My issue was trying to find a teacher. One was a fraud and he only learned from videos in the 90's. I eventually moved on to submission wrestling. My challenge was not that I wanted to quit but i had to deal with challenges of finding a legit teacher, which I unfortunately never found in BJJ. I also met one teacher who seemed legit but he only had his school for three months. He never even gave me a warning that his school was closing down. I even tried to find him and never did. I want to advocate for serious students who cannot find a legit teacher and I wish a video could be made about this since not all students are bad sometimes it is the teacher who is the problem.

My problem is: How do you train BJJ if there are no proper academies around? I really don't want to roll under a blue belt who doesn't care about the students' health at all! I am currently doing Judo but I really like BJJ aswell since it is able to boost your skills in Judo groundwork. But the BJJ schools around my area are very expensive compared to my Judo school which is only 30€ a month for 5 2-hour classes a week. We also get a free gym membership so I think it's one of the best deals that I've been able to find. Only problem is that we don't really focus on actual self defence, but rather we focus on learning new techniques so we can get our belts quicker and lots of randori aswell.

Glitched_Name which belt in Judo are you holding? I suggest you should stick with your judo. Judo has both ground work and take down so it is a plus point. Secondly if you want to change to BJJ only because of self defense purpose it does not make any sense. I say so bcos I think Judo is more effective than BJJ in a street fight situation. Every fight should start standing up so you need to find a way to take your opponents down first before you can apply submission or choke. For this purpose, i think judo is more than sufficient. In a street if you can execute a good judo throw your opponents may lie unconcious on the ground and there is no need for any ground work.

Glitched_Name Just curious how long does it take for you to get promoted to a new belt. In Singapore it is abt 3 months per belt. Price is abt 30 Sing Dollar per month. Regarding your question, I will say that BJJ will be useless if you can not take your opponent down. I assume you watch the UFC. In UFC, fighters who are judoka or wrestlers can take up BJJ very quickly and use it effectively in the octagons. Example are Anderson Sylva , Ronda Rousey(who are judoka) , Daniel Comier , John Jone ,Chris Weildman ... But it is diffcult for fighters who know BJJ only to take up wrestling /judo in a short period. I would suggest you get your black belt in Judo first and see how.If you see that your ground game in Judo is enough then that is it. If you want to try BJJ go for a no gi class so you dont have to concern abt the belt system. Hope it helps

I think the time between promotions varies a lot from school to school. In my case, usually 6-7 months per full belt (3-4 months for half belts) is usually the time between promotions and we don't have mass exams, it's our choice if we want to advance quickly or slowly. When we want to focus on getting the belts we discuss it with our instructor and practise on the techniques. and when we are ready, we have our exams. Also, skill and the ability to pick up new techniques is a major factor, I got my Orange belt in just 5 months after I got the Yellow since I picked up all of the techniques quickly. A friend of mine and also my Uke, has been doing Judo for more time than I have but he is still at yellow belt just because he doesnt want to rush the belts and instead wants to spend more time at the gym and spend more time improving his skills in randori. As for your suggestion I will consider that. I have a friend who does BJJ and he has shown me lots of groundwork chokes and armlocks, which we will learn at our judo school but in later belts.
