I love this video. Several months ago, we began talking about a move to France. We are about 4 years from retirement, and just like you mentioned about yourselves, we also are in a very good and comfortable place in our lives. There's just something about this internal desire that we both feel to live out our remaining years in France. So... we, too, have started investing in ways that will help us to meet our goals. Ours is a 3-year plan to buy a home or apartment --southwest France, Tours or Dijon are top picks. Then we'll start the long-term visa process. Thank you so much for your channel! Great video, I never knew there was so much planning that had to go into moving. I came to france in around 2004, 24 and no family, with just a backpack, slept on public benches, ate at resto du coeur, and worked my way up from there. Getting a job and everything. I also had dual citizenship so that helped a ton with paperwork. Anyway great video and very informative. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, having dual citizenship is a great gift. But what you did still required a lot of that last magic ingredient...courage! But yes, I think this stuff gets a lot more complicated once you have a house, kid, career, etc rooted in one country or the other and you don't have a corporate job or the military to move you abroad. So glad you went for it. Thanks for sharing your story and watching!

Nice, thanks for the video and info. I like getting into planning, mindset, finances, etc. As someone possibly in a similar situation wanting to move to Europe and having a young daughter. BTW, as I'm sure you know, France is the S tier, gold standard for US retirement accounts and tax treaties in Europe... They recognize Roth contributions, among others. (I'm not a tax expert) I'm rambling here, but the problem with France for my family and I is that pesky language! We have English & Spanish fluency with some German skills. Oh well, we'll figure it out :)

Hey ! If you have Spanish fluency, don't worry about French : they are both Latin languages, you won't be lost 😉 The tricky thing, I must confess as a Frenchman, is the pronounciation. A bit like English for strangers : lots of silent vowels or consonnes.

Great video! From this video and prior videos, I have the impression that your daughter was open to (if not excited about) your move to France. I have a 10 and 7 year old and whenever I have floated the idea of moving to France (or any other country for that matter), my kids communicate a strong disinterest in the idea. I - as a 40 year old corporate lawyer - would welcome and appreciate a break - but my kids don’t share that perspective of wanting a break from anything here in the U.S. I assume you would have still have pursued the move to France even if your daughter was strongly opposed?

This is a great question but not an easy one. I think for kids, the whole world is the one you know and if it's pretty great, why leave it??? Juliana had traveled a bit before and thought it was fun. We had some friends (we interviewed them on the channel) who had already done it she could talk to, and she had some curiousity about learning another language. Ultimately, yes, I think we would have gone even if she was more resistant. I spoke to as many adults as I could who lived abroad for some amount of time as kids and every one talked about how much they appreciated the experience. Some as it was happening, some as they got older. So i think we figured that just like other decisions we made because we thought it would develop her as a person, this was one more. You may have answered this already but regarding remote work/business ownership, did you get a particular visa to be able to do that? You're in a great position! Assuming you're not in a "regulated profession" in france like something medical, legal etc, you can likely qualify for the "entrepreneur Professions libéral" visa. Checkout our video with Valerie from startabusinessinfrance.com for more.
