I really enjoyed that. There are so many similarities to the way that we cut and harvest turf in Ireland but also there are some interesting differences. I still remember fondly sitting on the top of the trailer of turf with 2 or 3 of my siblings on the way home from the bog, just like in Scotland. The sods of turf seem to be much wider than we cut in Ireland but all in all its just like in Ireland. Its hard work but isn't it interesting that most of us who have harvested turf like this as kids reminisce as if it was a joy. One thing that you don't get from a video is the smells. I notice that there is lots of wild bog cotton in Scotland on the bogs also but the smell of the bog is something that you have to experience first-hand. When I was a child, I hated it, cos it meant hard work. But now I love it, as long as I don't have to stop and foot a bank of turf !

Thanks for sharing, brings back memories of the back breaking work involved in taking the peats home. Looking back it was still fun, when families, & relatives, neighbours helped out, in getting the peats home.

I've been cutting turf for anout 12 years now up in North County Louth. Last year was dismal! I had it cut by the end of May, but it pished for the rest of the year and managed to get little off the bog. Its a shame as last April and May were blistering and I could have dried it in weeks had I dug a bit earlier

Many an hour i spent at that job, often as not on my own, at least you have an hydraulic tipping trailer, the first one i used was a manual wind up screw.

Brings back awful memories of the moss (we call it that in this part of Ireland). I hated every minute of it. Although I didn't mind the spin home on top of the load.

@@patrickodonnell9770 Hi here in Ireland we use a one man slane as its called. This cuts nice lengths that are about 4x4 inches square, and a foot or more in length. I also have an outer-hebridean slane, which they refer to as a two-man. With our Irish one, one person can cut and lay it out (throwing the turf into place), but the two-man has a longer blade on it (which looks like a pilot whale dorsal fin) which allows you to take big slices of turf. You can't cut and throw so you need someone to catch the turf and lay it out, hence the two-man desription. I suspect this is what they used. They may have just cut the slabs with a an ordinary spade however. Looks nice and dry whatever way they cut it.
