I love the little things like Alatreon sounding metallic and Banbaro sounding like an elk mixed with a falling tree. And Deviljho sounds weirdly like a dragging flail.

Well, Deviljho sounds like it’s dragging a chain, but I find the rest of those sounds disgusting. Which I guess is fitting, considering it’s a giant glutton with teeth upon teeth upon teeth that constantly salivates and tears its own skin with its sheer muscle mass when it enrages. Also, in older games, its hide is described as slimy and its scalp is said to release an “unimaginable stench” when removed.

The sound design in this series is phenomenal. When Alatreon is going Dragon element mode you can hear this gathering energy sound but in this unsettling reverse way. It's so denomic sounding. Which is perfect because he's a black dragon.

You can also hear a human saying, “hey” during the end of his enraged roar which throws me off every time. Idk if it’s there for other languages but the “hey” is there in English.

Anjanath makes some sounds that actually sound like birds. Like I once said to a friend, some MH creatures are partly more scientific accurate to real dinosaurs/prehistoric wildlife than the movies.

It’s incredibly cool how much inspiration mh draws from real palaeontology and zoology for its creature designs. The birds are particularly noticeable because many of them possess traits from prehistory; cohoots, revultures, elgado seabirds, duffle penguins, etc, all have a clawed first finger of their hand/wing/flipper and sometimes the second and third as well, unlike most real world birds who lost their claws on their hands and fused the 2nd and 3rd fingers together (baby hoatzins are a bizarre exception and its really cool). Many of mh birds also have tiny teeth like the enantiornithenes (reverse birds) which are group of extremely bird-like dinosaurs but aren’t quite true birds, and that are closer related to birds than they are to non-avian dinosaurs. The first time I saw the woodland pteryx I was so delighted by them because they are essentially just archaeopteryx as a fantasy creature so I started capturing them to keep as pets immediately. Even the naming conventions used for the monsters and their categories draws from palaeontology. Like how they mix scientific names and more common words together to create names that sound unique and fit the monster descriptively but subtly enough that they don’t sound like a Pokemon name, like how the ‘nath’ in anjanath’s name is how the word ‘gnath’ (meaning ‘jaw’) is pronounced because it has a big toothy jaw. Carapacean takes ‘carapace’ and ‘crustacean’ for the crabs and Neopteron for the insects is a very slightly altered version of the group of real world insects called the ‘neoptera’ which are flying insects which fold their wings over their backs when resting. Something that keeps me from being able to actually hate the piscine wyverns are their designs and names, lavisioth and jyuratodus both have a very coelacanth aesthetic without the mud/lava covering them and jyura shares part of its name with beotodus (who is as good as any of the fish can get), ‘otodus’, which is the genus name for the animal formerly known as ‘charcharacles megalodon’, ‘otodus megalodon’ (a lot of earlier palaeontology used to involve describing fossils as coming from bigger versions of modern animals rather than as a unique one, hence lumping in megalodon with the great white shark, ‘charcharacles charcharodon’, because megalodon teeth look most similar to great white teeth thanks to both sharks being large sharks that fed/feed on animals in a similar size range to themselves) because they have very shark-like faces and are much bigger than ordinary sharks. Basically, I’m a huge nerd for palaeontology/zoology and MH somehow manages to scratch that part of my brain so well, especially world/iceborne.

Sometimes when on a hunt the game lags in multiplayer, you can hear sounds clearly not heard normally. Like when Fatalis does his sweeping floor fire, if frozen at the right time, you can hear gurgling followed by a metallic screech similar to King Ghidora’s growls.

I’ve never realized Dodogama makes whale/marine mammal noises!! You can just hear the little smidge of it during his roars and that’s such a cool attention to detail. My fav monster sound design is still definitely Alateron tho, that crackling metallic sound sends a tingle down my spine every time. So cool!!

Sometimes when playing world I'll just turn the music off to hear the subtle sounds like snoring. I didn't even realize how much I enjoyed hearing them honestly til I noticed several were missing in Rise...

Yeaaa!! As a massive enjoyer of taking a stroll with ghillie in MHW/IB, the world feels much more alive. Going into Rise feels like such a downgrade (in terms of worldbuilding, atmosphere, sound design, etc.). I personally love the endemic life that are just doing its thing, instead of obvious trap tools for monsters in Rise.

1:29 Hyah Barioth! Hyah! Run like wind across the tundra. Jokes aside really nice to see this, they really make some bizare and really strange noises that often dont get as much atention to them due to the phenomenal music usally blasting in the background. Some sounds are recognizable ofcourse such as pain ones, or ones indicating a certain attack, but hearing them clearly here you can also hear what they have in em. Like Alatreon having creaking metal or Jho a metalish object been draged on the floor.

Some of Bazel's sounds seem to be derived from elephant noises; its roar in particular sounds like the roar of an elephant. I was talking to a friend about the sound design of the monsters and I showed her a video lf two asian elephants in a zoo roaring while playing around, and she also noticed the similarity.
