It's fantastic that this stage show turned into the best Saturday morning kids show of the 80's. One that parents actually enjoyed, though it wasn't till later we realized why they were laughing at stuff we weren't. You guys should do his 2011 Broadway show and compare.

Pee-Wee is a gem in terms of comedy lasting over 4+decades. I always knew he was The Spleen in Mystery Men, but it still blows my mind he was the "assistant/secondary" vampire in Buffy the Vampire Slayer... This was great. Seriously, needed some good laughs.

I tracked down an issue of Oui magazine (c.1980) with a photo feature on different kinds of stereo systems in which Paul Rubens appears (not naked) as a sort of proto-Pee Wee nerd with a super fancy stereo.

When I was 16 I named my cat, The Spleen after that character. Poor thing just died 22 years later. Never regretted naming a cat after that character

I saw him in What We Do in the Shadows in the vampire council thing full of actors that played vampires, and couldn't remember him being one in anything. Thanks for the info

As a hyperactive kid in the 80’s Pee Wee was my jam. The 80’s was full of shows that were not intended for kids that were Popular with kids. (Terminator/ Robocop/Predator)

A 6 year old me. We finally get cable and HBO and this was my introduction to PeeWee. The jokes were over my head but I was an instant fan for life. I recorded it on VHS and watched it over and over again. I have every line memorized. I also went to see PeeWee on Broadway in New York and when the curtain rose... The feeling of seeing my childhood in person was absolutely amazing. I introduced my wife, who is from Chile, and thank god she gets it lol.

I did. It was more like an extra session with the smaller audience. There were like 100-200 people there and we just stayed in the audience. He told some stories about his life and the character he developed. A few people got to get questions answered, but no autographs. I actually had the doll with me to get signed, but no dice.

The interesting thing I've noticed is that MST3K (with Joel Robinson) had similar Pee-Wee Herman vibes as well. MST3K seemed to be geared at children, but it felt very adult at the same time.

On my screen, it says I can translate this to English...I pressed it, and it said the exact same thing. So now all I want to know is what language it thought this was in the first place. Does the Kool-Aid man have his own language, is he even from this planet? I have questions!

My husband and I were never big PeeWee fans. Despite being the target age for the kids show. However, finding out about the origins, and hearing about it through Kyle's POV, was really interesting to us. I had no idea about any of the backstory!

In the early 2K’s Paul used to come to after parties on Nantucket which were pretty much high school beach parties. He would always gravitate to the most good looking guys and made sure they were at least 18 and would share is party favors. I happened to be friends with some of these guys so I got to partake by proxy. He was very funny and very nice. It did feel a little predatory the way he went for straight guys with alcohol and coke but these Guys didn’t say “no”. I also know of a “straight” identifying man who hooked up with him for money and drugs. I couldn’t judge him girls did it all the time. That’s how I’d go out when I didn’t have money. I’d go to some tourist trap for drinks and find someone to ask me out.

I always imagined peewee was just an adult little boy. So in the mind of a child he doesn't see anything wrong with the his friends and would trust a perfect stranger or invite them in to "play." Ps you should absolutely check out "it's always sunny" if you haven't.

Lawrence Fishburne did NOT replace Phil Hartman on Pee-Wee's Playhouse because of death! Playhouse aired for 5 seasons between 1986 and 1990. Hartman was only able to do a few episodes in Season 1of PWP because of his various commitments, the biggest being the fact he was a cast member on SNL. He was on SNL for 8 seasons! The other factor may have been his fallout with Paul Reubens over money. They co-created Pee-Wee Herman and a bunch of those other characters. Hartman also co-wrote the screenplay to Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Hartman didn't die until 1998. That was LONG after Pee-Wee's Playhouse ended and Reubens' career was stalled because of his incident in Florida. Reubens eventually rebuilt his career, mainly as a character actor in feature films (Batman Returns, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Nightmare Before Christmas)and doing various guest shots on different TV shows. The Pee-Wee character was retired for at least a decade after the 1991 MTV appearance.

I recently watched PeeWee's big top because I hadn't known about that one when I was younger. The weird make out session at the waterfall had too many closeups for way too long especially for a kids movie. I liked it though, you guys should watch that one. There can never be enough PeeWee. I'm also really jealous that you have the doll.

Why do they think everyone is always on “rock star candy”? Feldman never even really did drugs. He’s such a liar. As someone who has serious drug issues and someone with eyeballs I can see he didn’t have one. Haim you can clearly see did in so many movies. Pee Wee and the groundlings were like a hippy group kinda. If anything they were smoking weed and drinking. Although Pee Wee is in a Cheech and Chong movie (Nice dreams maybe it’s called?) which they do coke at dinner a bunch. I don’t think Pee Wee was known to be a hard drug user. Pee wee was the man. Incredibly talented.
