Yes, its my understanding that Grey and Darby had a romantic relationship in the book. It was decided though during production that for the sake of keeping the focus of the movie on the main story elements to excise this part of the book. I have to agree that made the right decision because it would have bogged down the flow of the movie plus when you consider that Darby was in a relationship with professor and that the story in the movie is made to take place over 2 to 3 weeks, it really wouldn't make sense for Grey and Darby to hook up because Darby would still be grieving the loss of Callahan.

Callahan (her professor/lover) was played by Sam Shepard, who also played Yeager in "The Right Stuff". Amazing man. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, novelist, poet, musician. Being a movie star was just his day job.

After book & movie I wrote US Govt for public information abt LA bayou to ask if it was possible. Army Corps of Engineers sent me a big load of info. Mississippi River & gulf coast is very complicated. Mississippi River was diverted by a canal in early 1800s but it was in the "wrong place" - the River would be several miles away if left alone. Fascinating! Lake Ponchatrain was enhanced to relieve flooding. The dikes throughout New Orleans help too. But it's always a struggle. Pelicans were endangered for awhile but have made a comeback. In Galveston too (brown pelicans in Gal).Julia Roberts has a million dollar smile! Thank you so much for your comments & for showing this!!!

It doesn't matter how many times I've watched movies with Julia Roberts in, that she doesn't show that cheeky but sensuous smile of hers.

You should consider 1408 for scary but not too scary, it's so good and very under rated.

John Grisham's novels have been great movies, but what really makes this movie is one of America's GREATEST treasures: Denzel Washington. Julia Roberts is great, Sam What'shisname is a decent law professor, John Heard was good supporting friend (also played the father in Home Alone.) However, it's Denzel who really brings the "It" factor to this film. It helps that he has great chemistry with Julia, but Denzel could read an insurance policy and find a way to make it interesting.

The director, Alan J. Pakula, also directed All The President's Men. The spirit of that movie is very strong here.

Best legal drama you may ever watch (which too few people seem to have seen---nowadays, anyway!): THE VERDICT [1982] Starring: Paul Newman, Charlotte Rampling; Lindsay Crouse; Jack Warden; James Mason... (et al.) Directed by (the great!): Sidney Lumet 🔥🔥 with a screenplay by (the equally stellar!): David Mamet 🤘🤘 [This is one of the strongest legal dramas ever committed to film.]

I second this. The Verdict is incredible. Newman should have won Best Actor that year.

Oh, and another top movie you definitely should watch: The Constant Gardener. It's a political and legal thriller including romance with magnificent performances by Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. Weisz took home an Oscar for it. I haven't seen people react to it which is a real shame because it's a masterpiece!

You were talking about films influencing people towards a career. Mine was the 1959’s Ben-Hur. After watching the movie, I got an unquenchable thirst to learn about Roman history. I ended up majoring in history, specializing in Roman history, focusing on the reasons for its decling and fall. You, and when your sister do a great job, keep it up. 👍

Someone mentioned this in the chat, and I’m going to second it here: check out Brian’s Song from 1971. It’s a true story about Brian Piccolo of the Chicago Bears.

Hey sisters! Thank you so much for doing this request and glad it won a poll. Great seeing Tony Goldwyn again as an enemy, he plays them very well. Denzel and Julia have great chemistry, it's one of those that's completely opposite of Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan. The suspense, terror, confusion, and plot all involving this brief was spectacular, nice reaction. It deserved all the awards it won. I suggest Cliffhanger and Harry And The Hendersons.

I think my favorite aspect of PIB is when they recognize an actor from the projects that actor was probably most ashamed to have been in. Oohh that's Stanley Tucci from Easy A 😂

This movie came out in 1993, the same year as The Fugitive. I remember seeing them in theaters. What makes them work is they treat the audience like intelligent adults. There are no jokes, the protagonists are quiet and dont have big egos. The stakes are high but realistic. Wish they make them like that again.

The actor at 39:45 was a substitute teacher for my sister's class. I wasn't in the class but she told me that he shared stories about filming this movie. Like how it was his idea to look like he had just been eating.

John Grisham was a friend of the father of one of my middle school teachers in New Orleans. Her dad and Grisham went to Ole Miss together. My teacher’s sister was named Darby and that’s where Grisham got the name for Julia’s character.

I remember being excited about reading this and "The Firm" before it, and then "The Client" after it. The movies for both came out that same year with the biggest stars as leads. People like to joke about Grisham as being such mainstream books but they were fun, especially compared to a lot of what is popular now.

The guy they chased her down behaves like a "spike" an agent trained to kill targets officially assigned to him. The guy who killed in adult theater and hotel room is what we commonly called a "kite", they are like spikes but work as for hire assassins that if this go wrong you cut the cord, and they are on their own. Spikes tend to be more brash since they have official covers, they have ties to gov agencies and have to be protected.
