The pendulum kick is an amazing kick for covering distance quickly. If you want to knock people out with kicks, this is your kick.

When most people think Muay Thai they think hard kicks. Although the pendulum kick isn't as powerful as a switch roundhouse, it's still an incredibly fast roundhouse kick and very effective in shutting down your opponent's attack, dealing some damage, maybe breaking some ribs, and scoring some points.
In this technique video, USMTA Champ Chris Klodfelter shows us the proper technique and how to throw the pendulum kick.

I love this kick. I find its also great for setting up crosses or a jab-cross afterwards, since you have to inevitably shift your weight on your lead leg again, which gives you good moment for some follow-up punches.

Awesome Video, If i may make a suggestion, Isreal Gomes taught me the art of moving forward when attacking. I see the instructor executing the pendulum kick, then doing a quick step back. This seems like an amazing opportunity to step FORWARD after connecting with the kick, and deliver some hooks and possibly knees.

This kick is sort of similar to a sliding roundhouse in taekwondo. That's my specialty, but as most know it's a point sparring system, so I took the best of TKD and added it to Muay Thai (spinning back kicks, back kicks, things like that). This is a really great example of the pendulum kick, the whole "Knocking that foot out of the way" really explains it. It's the same in tkd pretty much, only thing that is different is the elevation, where the sliding roundhouse is used to either hit the chest plate or to get a head kick in.

I learned this kick from jeet kune do (we call it the nao tek, or hook kick), and it ended up becoming my best friend when i took up muay thai. Pretty sure i like it way more than the switch kick, because it allows me to stay in a wider stance so my punches can stay strong.

I feel like it's a great technique for attacking the front leg & offsetting their balance but the risk/reward for attacking the back leg does not seem worthwhile when you are so open to the cross

Jeremy Phillips works great for me im 6'4 and fairly quick so i love hammering my opponents back leg in muay thai, it is surprisingly easy to avoid the cross at my height and counter with a knee or combo of my own

Check again Chris Klodfelter's video, when he gets back his left foot he changes his guard. You don't, and there is a moment in which you find yourself with both legs together.

In the Sagat footage, you can see he uses that kick either to the head or inside leg which is perfect to piss off your opponent or set him up for something else. What you're saying is to use that kick to target the rear leg? I completely disagree with that strategy. First there is very little advantage to go for the opponent's rear leg. It's not like you can inflict a charlie horse like the front one which is much closer. Second there is great risks for going so close just to reach that leg and is not worth it. Your opponent can pivot out of your angle to the right with a nice hook and come back with a devastating round house. Not worth the risk.

So does the lead hand block across his guard, or just kinda float in front of his gloves? Great tutorial otherwise
@seanfagan
@seanfagan 5 жыл бұрын
I'd say to block across his guard would be ideal as it would help avoid counters and turn more into your kick

That's looks like a basic tae kwon do kick but more lazy and basic, i have no doubt that it will work, but i don't see why it would be a special kick. The only thing in i might see a difference is in the fact that Muay Thai guys are more badass than tkd guys

Ooowee, Interesting seeing the Pendulum kick in a more (Muay) squared stance. I feel like Pendulum step is easier in a bladed stance i.e Karate, TKD, JKD.
