In regards to how Vic played along with Oz's Mom's imagined scenario, he's actually doing the right thing. I've worked in Memory Care facilities and as long as you aren't going to put them or others at risk by playing along with their perception of reality, then it is clinically recommended to do so. It diffuses the scenario they're living in now. It won't confuse her...she's already confused... he's making her feel safe "right now"... which is all dementia patients often have. They live in the now. The past is missing chunks, the present is confusing and the future is scary. Playing along (as long as it is safe to do so) is the best option of the bad options.

I dunno, I think Sofia needs leverage more than she needs to hurt him. She will hurt Oz, but I think it'll be by hurting Victor, and then she'll kidnap Mrs. Cobb. But of course it's all theorizing at this point. If this show has proven anything, it's that it is excellent at subverting expectations.

I never expected a story arc like this in 'The Penguin'. Just one reason why this show better win some major Emmys next awards season.

Might be a jump, but I feel like Oz's interaction with his mom and her request might just be the move Sal and Sophia won't expect. If Oz's mom dies then they got nothing, whether she does herself in or if Oz has to do it himself. Sends a message, and really frees Oz of any weakness. Though, I do feel like he might betray Vic by the end of this, like let him die or something to shed that connection as well. Colin said we would hate Oz by the end of this. I'm worried.

My fearless forecast has it the other way around. In Ep 7, Vic is killed in front of Oz as punishment from Sal, and in Ep 8, the mom is killed by Sofia, and Oz runs for mayor to fight organized crime. And that will be his storyline in The Batman 2 -- trying to kill Sofia as mayor/kingpin of Gotham.

I'm reminded of TAS (and probably so are the writers since the first appearance post-TAS of mainstay Gotham reporter Summer Gleeson is this show before she dies). There's an episode where Oswald gets out of jail and reforms and immediately gets treated like a Circus sideshow and a peasant by wealthy elites he wants to emulate and then rolled by two scamming socialites. Eventually he loses his cool and kidnaps them fot ransom and when Batman catches him he just says, "I just wanted friendship." I feel like that characterization runs all the way through this show, made easier by having Oswald be poor his entire life instead of born rich.

Maybe it's the other way 'round - maybe Sofia will kill or maim Victor as he tries to protect the mother. If she does kill the mother, Penguin would have to be somewhat relieved that he won't have to live up to his promise to put her out of her misery someday.

I love the structure of the conflicts and moments this episode. Maroni's Islamic prayer and Iranian cooking show how much he truly adopted his wife into his life and lets her live through him. This also shows Sophia how unlike her father he is. And him casually adopting her as his heir through that shared culture continues this tradition of family meaning something more than blood. Likewise, Sophia is going to war against Oz, who has the same backstory she does but a funhouse mirror. His abusive dad died and his loving mom lived and he grew up a disabled man with nothing cutting deals and scheming. Her abusive dad lived and her loving mom died and she grew up a woman under a strict, brutal patriarchy surrounded by massive wealth but denied an opportunity at true, unrestricted power. They're angry people missing something trying to do a little bit right by people who have never been protected, but they're doing it in an ugly shadow economy in the literal shadows of a corrupt city.

Him going down a dark path normally means they keep those characters alive. Also, I have fought against the Victor Zsasz theory. You are actually supposed to feed into the delusions of people with alzheimer's and dementia. If they think a loved one is still alive, and you have to tell them they're dead, they have to grieve again. Then they'll forget the conversation, ask you again tomorrow, then they grieve again. Imagine having to feel the full grief of learning your child or partner is dead over and over and over just because we feel like it's right to tell the truth. Psychologists and doctors say instead of making them grieve the loss of their loved ones every day, over and over again, it's better to allow them to live as if their loved ones are still alive, as they'll forget the conversation anyway. It's a more humane way of letting them live out their very difficult final years with a little bit more peace.
