The masterful performance from Colin is on another level. He has soo much nuance, subtlety and range it makes you love and hate him at the same time. He feels like a real person on screen reeling with pain, desire and anger. So many iconic scenes. Give him an emmy already!

I loved how on interviews Colin talks of Oz in third person. It's like he treats the character like a real living entity separate to him, like acting as The Penguin was like walking in his shoes, becoming him. And I think that is so beautiful, not all actors have this perception with a character.

@@eskanda3434 Sure, writing, wardrobe, makeup, directing and the actor themselves make up the character. If one of those things is off the whole thing can fall apart. I wouldn't say Leto is a terrible actor, so I wouldn't say his Joker being a flop was completely his fault. A case where everything about the character was off. Then in the Penguin, everything is perfect, just how it goes.

Nothing could've made Jared Leto's Joker good that would be impossible. Jesse Eisenberg and Jared Leto were terrible castings. The DCEU was just doomed from the start. It had a terrible introduction to Superman and it got worse and worse as it went on. Warner Brothers truly knows how to destroy a franchise before it even begins.

It’s because the writing is nuanced and Farrell is magical. Oz has “redeeming” qualities. He adores his mother, clearly has his own kind of love for Vic, and despite being willing to do terrible things to get there, wants to be remembered as a sort of working class hero among the disadvantaged of Gotham. Tie that with the fact that we’re seeing a truly transformative and career defining performance from Farrell? It’s impossible not to root for him. What’s arguably as impressive is it’s equally easy to root for Sophia who is on the opposing side

I struggle so much describing how much on a profound level I like this show. Probably because I lack the language, but I also think, that we have so much of trash nowadays that when something is not just good, is great, it takes out breath away, in a sense there is some good in having so much bad shows and cinema, very paradoxical. It is just delightful to see the acting, lighting, writing of this show; I have always liked watching manipulative characters done right, even with acess to all the information one can be persuaded and it is amazing, scary, but amazing. I hope I never enounter someone like the penguin, I would be worse than Vic

There's a (well, many) reason(s) this series has been often compared to The Sopranos -- the leads are really quite similar. Mommy issues, having to fight to get up top, etc. But I showed my Mom a clip of Colin from In Bruges and then showed her a clip from The Batman and told her that it's the same guy and she practically slapped me in the face. Dude is CRUSHING it. I'm SO happy he turned away from the big budget beautiful boy bullshit and started choosing interesting roles.

Farrell's Pinguin is a mix of Tony Soprano with Walter White and a pitch of the Pinguin fron the arkham games. Is just perfect and so diferent... A performance so good that i can compare to Ledger's joker.. And Sophia.. owww boy! Cristin Milioti ROCKS! a complete 180 to the comincs.. but is so perfect!

Great question. I think the pace of the scene and the flow of context is there on the page and that definitely shapes the way the performance ends up being, but a lot of the nuances are added by Farrell. The writing absolutely works in collaboration with the acting.

The writing is good but anyone else could just say the line and no one cares. You can see that Milioti also affected by Collin's performance on that scene (She nearly try to comfort him when the camera pans out forgetting that her character also face worse situation ).

It's still manipulation because he's using his trauma to bend his will to what the Penguin desires. Someone did care about Vic and they could have left for California together and been happy - but he bet on the wrong horse all because Penguin used Vic's daddy issues and survivors guilt as a tool to turn him into his puppet.

This is pure over-the-top glaze. It's a decent show with SOME fine actors. The kid was okay, his acting was serviceable, nothing more. While I loved the dark climax, The rest of the last episode was just dumb. A little too neat and convenient. Things just HAPPEN to advance the plot, the villains all became complete idiots, and the crime lords teaming up was just gay. It's a decent show but there's no depth to explore. Collins character is the only one that doesn't come off like a boilerplate writer's room concoction
