Penguin didn’t kill Victor because he knew too much. He killed him because he didn’t want anyone he cared about around him anymore because he didn’t wanna give people that were coming after him that leverage of using people he cared about to get to him, because like he said himself “It’s too much.” They did it with his mom and he almost lost it.

That probably was a reason too tho
@jakemoores96412 күн бұрын
I used to think that but now I personally think he saw no more use for him(what made me think that is I recently watched the penguin again. In the 1st episode when penguin's about to shoot vic for trying to steal his rims and vic is begging for his life you see a look in penguin's face and eyes similar to a predator that found his prey)
@NizzyHussle2 күн бұрын
Yeah exactly he literally says it when he kills Victor he realized when Victor said he cared for him he can’t have anyone use anyone against him so he dealt with it himself
@nebidiaswift52002 күн бұрын
I see what you’re saying but end of it you clarified his point… him being that close meant he knew too much the fact he was family is the same reason he couldn’t jeep him around. He knew too much/he was close is the same thing… end of day they weren’t family because of blood but because of their journey and what he knew. The whole point of the scene was to show why he’s such a bad guy he didn’t care about Vic just like he didn’t care about his mother. Difference is his moms can’t talk now but Vic could
@johnnychopping36552 күн бұрын
Well from a creative standpoint it was done to show the audience just how repulsive a human being Penguin is... which I don't mind but it seemed dumb to me as Victor was still a massive asset for him who he could have manipulated for years, which I don't think fits with the Penguin's character personally I think he's smarter than that

The Penguin didn’t really love his mother. She was a reflection of his need for validation and to be number one. He needed her as another vehicle to feel that he was unrivalled. That’s why he let his brothers die. If he loved her, he would have let her go and he never would have kept her alive (against her wish to not be in a vegetative state). That’s why she’s crying at the end. She knew he was a monster and pretended otherwise because she couldn’t bring herself to kill him.

I completely agree and dug a little deeper and ChatGPT said something I fully agree with: Key Aspects of Their Relationship: 1. Enmeshment and Overdependence: • Oswald and his mother are often portrayed as overly attached, with Oswald depending on her for emotional support and validation. This lack of boundaries creates an unhealthy dynamic where Oswald sees her as the sole source of love and approval. • Psychologically, such relationships can stem from a lack of other secure attachments in early life. Oswald’s isolation, bullying, and lack of social acceptance may have intensified his dependence on his mother as his only safe and validating connection. 2. Narcissistic Dynamics: • Some interpretations suggest Oswald’s mother may have treated him as an extension of herself rather than as an independent person. This dynamic, often seen in narcissistic parenting, can result in a child growing up with a fragile sense of self and becoming overly focused on gaining the parent’s approval. • Oswald’s deep need to please his mother and his disproportionate reactions to any perceived threats to her or their relationship align with this. 3. Maternal Idealization: • Oswald’s mother is often portrayed as the one person who saw him as special and valuable despite his physical appearance and social rejection. He idealizes her as a loving figure who counterbalances the world’s cruelty. • This idealization can lead to distorted emotional priorities. Oswald might sacrifice logic, morality, or even his own well-being to maintain her approval or defend her honor. 4. Fear of Abandonment: • Many depictions of The Penguin show him as a deeply insecure character who fears being alone or unloved. His mother’s role as his primary (or only) attachment figure exacerbates this fear, making him overly protective and possessive of her. • This is often a hallmark of attachment trauma or neglect, where a child’s early relationships fail to provide consistent care, leading to intense clinginess in adulthood. 5. Oedipal Undertones: • In some versions of the story, Oswald’s relationship with his mother has subtle (or overt) Oedipal elements. He may view her as not just a caregiver but also a quasi-romantic figure, particularly if he lacks other close relationships. • Freud’s Oedipus complex theory suggests that unresolved early attachment conflicts with the mother can manifest as inappropriate dependency or rivalry for her attention, which could explain the possessiveness and jealousy Oswald exhibits. 6. Stunted Emotional Development: • Oswald’s lifelong rejection and trauma likely hindered his emotional maturity. His relationship with his mother may reflect a childlike need for unconditional love and protection, which he cannot find elsewhere. • This arrested development can lead to an exaggerated and often unhealthy bond with the one person who represents safety, even if the relationship itself is dysfunctional. Psychological Theories in Play: • Attachment Theory: Oswald’s behavior aligns with an insecure or anxious attachment style. His fear of abandonment and obsessive need to protect and please his mother are hallmarks of someone whose early attachment needs were inconsistently met. • Psychodynamic Theory: His over-identification with his mother and unresolved conflicts with her may contribute to his lack of emotional regulation and his criminal behavior. • Trauma Theory: Bullying, rejection, and physical deformities likely contributed to feelings of inadequacy, making his mother’s love appear as his only source of worth. Impact on Oswald’s Personality and Behavior: The combination of these psychological dynamics may explain why Oswald exhibits traits like: • Obsessive protectiveness of his mother. • Intense rage or violence toward those who disrespect or harm her. • Difficulty forming healthy adult relationships. • A skewed moral compass, where his devotion to her supersedes ethical considerations.

There are _so many_ films about the Tongs, Triads, Yakuza, various British gangs and syndicates, etc. all of varying levels of accuracy and verisimilitude. Having on someone to give the expert commentary, as you do with the Mob, would add significant value to such a review even if it adds the cost of arranging the guest to be on camera with you.

Plenty of crime movies/docs out there for you to review for now Mr. Franzese. Personally, I’d like to hear your thoughts on “Eastern Promises”, since you worked with the Russians and all. As far as reviewing all movies, maybe make that a separate genre, but you got smarter guys on this than me. God bless!

Jimmy Altieri and Raymond Curto were also informants in the Sopranos. Although it was never 100% confirmed about Jimmy, he most likely was from his reaction before Silvio killed him. Raymond wasn't a big role character, but I was shocked when he was revealed as one

The Penguin is the perfect representation of evil. Evil is, fundamentally, treacherous. It's not capable of real connection or love. It can only isolate and destroy. There's levels to it, of course, but the further down the path of darkness one treads, the lonelier and lonelier the road gets. At earlier stages on that path, there can be some kinship around shared evil goals. Mobsters, for example, had friends within their world. There was comradery there. But the guys who made it to the top, the ones who ran everything, they had few real friends. They had plenty of folks that wanted to take their place, take what they have. Nevermind the folks with badges trying to throw a net over the whole thing. If you choose to go the evil path, you may find wealth, power, fortune, even prestige. But you'll always be alone, frozen out of connection to humanity.

The penguin is generally a bad guy in the Batman stuff but always ends up trying to get away from the real trouble at some point. In the end the cobblepots are one of the founding families of Gotham and he more or less likes his city the same way Bruce Wayne does. I would say his legitimacy as someone part of one of the founding families of the city is often his redeeming quality. Sometimes it's what causes the penguin to do irrational betrayals, well that and saving his own bacon from trouble. Penguin acts like he is a mafia boss and he does run his little gang/syndicate but he is NOT part of any mobs though he usually works with the Italian and sometimes Russian mobs in Gotham and i think some people are confusing the facts here due to the way Farrell's character is portrayed. Again if am not mistaken, they actually made him at least a member of the Italian mob in The Batman so in this specific case maybe he actually is part of the mob. The Falcone and Marone (Maroni?) are the two powerful "Italian" mob families of Gotham and they usually deal in absolute crime, they should NOT be compared to the real New York families simply because they are just quite different. In Gotham the mob, no matter Italian or not, will always be involved in major crimes such as trafficking, corruption/blackmailing and contract hits of any kind. They simply do not care because they do their utmost to keep power and control. The writers usually use the mob as a filler between gaps where supervillains cannot be or as a support/anti-support entity for supervillains. True to DC, the Penguin is always ready to betray and double-cross if it gives him any kind of advantage. All he needs is a reason to do it and he will. However this version is more than that, it's part of this extremely dark iteration of The Batman where every single character is dark beyond imagining. So far both the Riddler and Penguin have been complete, unrelenting psychopaths. This is one of many reasons why i am very excited for The Batman Part 2.

Truthfully Mr.Franzese there are more Mob movies you could do - Ghost Dog: Way Of The Samurai - Killing Them Softly - American Me (Mexican mafia but still Mafia style Hierarchy theme) Etc Those 3 are my recommendations Thinner also has a mob element even though it’s a horror movie. Still excellent performance by Joe Mantegna as Richie “The Hammer” Chinelli. Don’t think it’s counts as a mob movie though hahah

As an Italian myself, Falcone is definitely an Italian surname (and quite ironically, it was the surname of Giovanni Falcone, a judge who maybe more than anyone has opposed the mafia with his collegue Paolo Borsellino, and both of them got killed for it). I've never heard of the surname Maroni though, besides the Batman comics

I think it would be a good idea to do a ranking and evaluation of the mob bosses that appear in TV and in cinema. I know he's done an evaluation in the movies but it would be nice if he did the bosses, who do you think is a capable leader or full of weaknesses that harm their organizations. For example, is Tony Soprano a good boss compared to Sonny in Bronx Tales

Michael, HBO did another great mafia series called Shadows (Umbre in Romanian) it's a really good Eastern European mob series about a taxi driver that doubles as a hitman for a Romanian mob, it's a gritty, very raw series about that life with a spin, nothing shiny, no American/Hollywood bling. It's about his struggles of balancing family life with gangster life, wish you'll watch it! Have a great new year!

I just found out about you doing these Mob Mondays and it’s great to hear from you again. If there’s not many American mob movies left to review, what do you think about reviewing international mob movies and maybe comparing them to what you know? There’s a ton of Yakuza movies, for example. Takeshi ‘Beat’ Kitano has made a few movies about that life. Great review, by the way. I was passing on The Penguin but now I think I’ll give it a look see.
