Fun fact: The term "Guerrilla" originated in Spain, in which remnants of an army and civilians fight against much larger invading armies and use the local terrain to their advantage, such as mountains, jungles or urban areas, hiding and making surprise and rapid attacks, which was widely used in the Peninsular War.

Really is kinda tragic how the Spanish were left out of the important post war discussions by the great powers, especially given how pivotal their part was in the war.
@billder26554 күн бұрын
yeah but its also pretty tragic how the Spanish regular army stopped loads of its regiments fighting with Britain and Portugal for large sections of the conflict - the Guerrillas gave the British lots of crucial help with scouting and pathfinding, but the Regular Army and the Spanish government were very distrustful of Britain and the coalition, hence there aren't nearly as many Spanish troops at critical battles like Salamanca and Vitoria. Relations got a bit better after those victories (the Spanish government proclaim Wellington their saviour), but they sour again after Wellington sends 25,000 spanish troops home during the invasion of France for poor conduct towards civilians. Important to remember that Britain and Spain were at war just a few years prior, with the Spanish fleet getting trounced at Trafalgar - Britain were hardly going to turn around and embrace the nation that still remained one of their primary geopolitical threats, especially given the tensions between the two nations' commanders.

They did a lot worse than just that… Duke of Wellington himself called the men the “scum of the earth”. The most violent and dangerous armies are always the most successful, look at the Mongol Horde in Asia for example Personally I’m convinced it was a result of Britain never resorting to conscription. They were constantly employing men who either had no choice (aka prisoners) or men who needed money to survive. Don’t get me wrong, this was a small minority, but it only takes a minority to cause mayhem, look at French colonial soldiers in Italy during WW2, or Spanish explorers in the Americas
@obvious-troll4 күн бұрын
Just a bit of banter
@billder26554 күн бұрын
reminder that Wellington had to send 25,000 spanish troops home in disgrace from the invasion of france because of their looting... every side involved in the war had soldiers that looted, at least the british commanders took measures to try and stop it - unlike the French, whose occupation actively relied on looting. There were very bad cases of British looting, but people were regularly hung for it - the French outright instructed their troops to murder, raid and pillage - that's a pretty crucial difference.

Napoleon was right about one thing. The Spanish royal family behaved very incompetently. Just after the Napoleonic Wars, they lost most of their colonies. I dare say that Joseph could probably have been a better king than Charles or Ferdinand, and Spain could have benefited as much as the Netherlands did under the Napoleonic dynasty.

ANYBODY would have been a better King that the both of them. Ferdinand VII was particullary awfull. Probably our worst KIng, and the bar is pretty low........ Joshep I intentions were not bad, actually, the problem was, that he actually had no saying. He even had to condecorate French officers with spanish awards, for killing his suposedly own civilian subjects (despite him warning Napoleon that this would enrage further spanish people). He was esentially Napoleons general governour, had no real power, and couldn`t even guarantee the safety of his spanish supporters. A pitty. Spanish Guerrillas cost the French troops the most lives (bar disease of course), but yeah the British win a lot of the crucial battles, especially in the latter years. I don't necessarily think Spain 'lose' the war without Britain because I don't think France had the capacity to quell Spanish Insurrection, but they definitely don't 'win' the war without Britain either - ie. the county would be in limbo for years, with Spain losing lots of pitched battles and France struggling to raid the cash and supplies they needed to sustain their troops. France would have to leave eventually because their occupation was totally unsustainable in the long run, but Spain would never be in a position to force them out and the country would've been in an even more terrible state.

I'm probably not going to make Spanish friends but the Napoleonic French dynasty would have ruled Spain far better than the Bourbon French dynasty did, and the Spanish-allied victory during the Peninsular War had dire consequences for Spain itself. In fact Europe would be such a better place nowadays had Napoléon won.

@@PVZzombieguy No I'm not kidding. The 19th century was an utter calamity for Spain. Moreover, Europe nowadays is degenerate, decadent, ruled by corrupted leaders who brainwash the citizens, steal their money and replace them with immigrants. This happens in great part because (((British))) economy and influence were allowed to thrive after France's defeat during the Napoleonic wars.

This war looked like such a clusterfuck. I read an article about Spanish atrocities and torture against French and their allies, gnarly.

This video fell short compared to others posted on the channel. For example, compared to the WWI video with flags, those were more flexible. In this video, the flags seemed less smooth and pliable. If the issue was time, it would be interesting to double the video’s length and show the flags from 0:00 to 12:00 for each day on the map, which would make them more graceful. I recommend that the production team or the producer consider redoing the video.

0:55 i guess that was napoleon himself coming to spain? idk i just like how a bunch of french flags areive and immediately plunge through the country and like 20 seconds later half of spain is blue and casualties ratio went from 3:1 to less than 1.5:1

Yes, Nepoleon personally came down to Spain to restore the situation and then immediately left to handle other fronts.
