They did a lot worse than just that… Duke of Wellington himself called the men the “scum of the earth”. The most violent and dangerous armies are always the most successful, look at the Mongol Horde in Asia for example Personally I’m convinced it was a result of Britain never resorting to conscription. They were constantly employing men who either had no choice (aka prisoners) or men who needed money to survive. Don’t get me wrong, this was a small minority, but it only takes a minority to cause mayhem, look at French colonial soldiers in Italy during WW2, or Spanish explorers in the Americas

reminder that Wellington had to send 25,000 spanish troops home in disgrace from the invasion of france because of their looting... every side involved in the war had soldiers that looted, at least the british commanders took measures to try and stop it - unlike the French, whose occupation actively relied on looting. There were very bad cases of British looting, but people were regularly hung for it - the French outright instructed their troops to murder, raid and pillage - that's a pretty crucial difference.

@billder Reminder that quite some brothers of arms of those alleged 25000 spanish troops of the 4 Ejercito, "send home in disgrace from the invasion of France because of their looting" were, a few weeks before, the The Saint Martial Heights Battle casualties (1658 between dead and wounded, more precisely), by not only holding the Irún line that separated Wellington's flank and Graham's besieging of Saint Sebastian from the 9 french divisions march against them that Soult had regrouped in the French Basque Country border, after his previous defeat at the bask city capital of Vitoria by this same spanish fourth army, but overcoming them with fixed bayonet charges that ended up dispersing and annulling the enemy force. "18000 enemies with a great amount of artillery disolved like smoke that never will cause offence again" (sic), according to the Allied headquarters official post-battle statement. Reminder that all of this blood was shed so that the anglo portuguese allied force that ended up entering Saint Sebastian with minimal casualties on the same Saint Martial battle’ 31st August 1813 day, ended burning and pillaging up the city for days. Agreed. Looters exist in all invasion or occupation forces. And it is one of the darker realities of war. This was Wellington's main argument in response for war reparations request of the city comission of main representatives (without any success), due to the huge damage and human and material losses caused by the theoretically allied forces. Whose almost complete reconstruction over decades, incidentally, led to its very beautiful urban present configuration (“no hay mal que por bien no venga”).

Between 1807 and 1810, Napoleon ordered three invasions of Portugal, a country that refused to apply the Continental Blockade, but all of them were defeated. The first was the only one that had any success as it occupied the entire country with French general Junot installing himself in Lisbon, the occupation did not last a year and the French troops were defeated and expelled from the country by a Portuguese and English army. The other two invasions were defeated before they managed to occupy any part of the territory. The Portuguese army helped in the fight against the French already in Spain, contributing together with the Spanish and English to the defeat of Napoleon's troops in the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal's important action in the Peninsular War is poorly described in this video.

Really is kinda tragic how the Spanish were left out of the important post war discussions by the great powers, especially given how pivotal their part was in the war.
@billder2655Ай бұрын
yeah but its also pretty tragic how the Spanish regular army stopped loads of its regiments fighting with Britain and Portugal for large sections of the conflict - the Guerrillas gave the British lots of crucial help with scouting and pathfinding, but the Regular Army and the Spanish government were very distrustful of Britain and the coalition, hence there aren't nearly as many Spanish troops at critical battles like Salamanca and Vitoria. Relations got a bit better after those victories (the Spanish government proclaim Wellington their saviour), but they sour again after Wellington sends 25,000 spanish troops home during the invasion of France for poor conduct towards civilians. Important to remember that Britain and Spain were at war just a few years prior, with the Spanish fleet getting trounced at Trafalgar - Britain were hardly going to turn around and embrace the nation that still remained one of their primary geopolitical threats, especially given the tensions between the two nations' commanders.

Funny how historians simply say he "ran away" when in order to move the entirety of the court and church and bank and literally the entire government structure it took many many months. Ofc we, the ones who stayed didn't like it one bit. But it was the right choice. Napoleon could have the territory, but would never claim victory because Portugal still had it's armies and navies. The Peninsular War (1807-1814) was a military conflict between the First French Empire and the alliance of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Spanish Empire and the Kingdom of Portugal and Algarves for dominance of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars. The conflict began when the French and Spanish armies invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807, and began in 1808 after France turned against Spain, its ally until then. The war lasted until Napoleon's defeat by the Sixth Coalition in 1814, being seen as one of the first wars of national liberation and significantly in the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare.
