British troops did not come to help but to fight frenchs. All textile, shipyards and associated industries were burnt and totally destroyed by british during this war. One of their orders was to "To do what needed to prevent Spain from recovering again". As we say ... "With such allies .. what do we want enemies for?"

Fun fact: The term "Guerrilla" originated in Spain, in which remnants of an army and civilians fight against much larger invading armies and use the local terrain to their advantage, such as mountains, jungles or urban areas, hiding and making surprise and rapid attacks, which was widely used in the Peninsular War.

Between 1807 and 1810, Napoleon ordered three invasions of Portugal, a country that refused to apply the Continental Blockade, but all of them were defeated. The first was the only one that had any success as it occupied the entire country with French general Junot installing himself in Lisbon, the occupation did not last a year and the French troops were defeated and expelled from the country by a Portuguese and English army. The other two invasions were defeated before they managed to occupy any part of the territory. The Portuguese army helped in the fight against the French already in Spain, contributing together with the Spanish and English to the defeat of Napoleon's troops in the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal's important action in the Peninsular War is poorly described in this video.

Spain was the first country to defeat an army of Napoleon, at Bailén, June 1808. A Spanish offensive followed, forcing the French to retreat 300-800 km across the peninsula (behind the Ebro river). King Joseph Napoleon fled Madrid as quickly as he could. Spain sent an army at that time to Portugal to help Portugal. We also beat the French at the naval battle of Poza de Santa Isabel, June 1808. That same month we beat the French at Gerona (behind the Ebro) and Valencia. This was a milestone throughout Europe.

@@Gloriaimperial1 Almost simultaneously, the Battle of Vimeiro was fought on August 21, 1808, as part of the First French Invasion of Portugal. On one side, there was the Napoleonic French army commanded by Jean Andoche Junot, made up of around 13,000 men and, on the other hand, the Anglo-Portuguese army made up of approximately 19,000 men, commanded by Sir Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington. The Battle of Vimeiro was an undeniable victory for the Anglo-Portuguese army over the forces of Imperial France, putting an end to the First French Invasion of Portugal.

@@josemaia9051 Of course, the Portuguese, the Spanish, and the British allies who came later, collaborated. Even with all this effort, I think Napoleon complicated the French situation by attacking Russia. And it was still necessary for the Austrian and German allies to rebel against Napoleon in his rear. Together we defeated Napoleon, but perhaps the victory began with the Iberian rebellion.

They did a lot worse than just that… Duke of Wellington himself called the men the “scum of the earth”. The most violent and dangerous armies are always the most successful, look at the Mongol Horde in Asia for example Personally I’m convinced it was a result of Britain never resorting to conscription. They were constantly employing men who either had no choice (aka prisoners) or men who needed money to survive. Don’t get me wrong, this was a small minority, but it only takes a minority to cause mayhem, look at French colonial soldiers in Italy during WW2, or Spanish explorers in the Americas

reminder that Wellington had to send 25,000 spanish troops home in disgrace from the invasion of france because of their looting... every side involved in the war had soldiers that looted, at least the british commanders took measures to try and stop it - unlike the French, whose occupation actively relied on looting. There were very bad cases of British looting, but people were regularly hung for it - the French outright instructed their troops to murder, raid and pillage - that's a pretty crucial difference.

@billder Reminder that quite some brothers of arms of those alleged 25000 spanish troops of the 4 Ejercito, "send home in disgrace from the invasion of France because of their looting" were, a few weeks before, the The Saint Martial Heights Battle casualties (1658 between dead and wounded, more precisely), by not only holding the Irún line that separated Wellington's flank and Graham's besieging of Saint Sebastian from the 9 french divisions march against them that Soult had regrouped in the French Basque Country border, after his previous defeat at the bask city capital of Vitoria by this same spanish fourth army, but overcoming them with fixed bayonet charges that ended up dispersing and annulling the enemy force. "18000 enemies with a great amount of artillery disolved like smoke that never will cause offence again" (sic), according to the Allied headquarters official post-battle statement. Reminder that all of this blood was shed so that the anglo portuguese allied force that ended up entering Saint Sebastian with minimal casualties on the same Saint Martial battle’ 31st August 1813 day, ended burning and pillaging up the city for days. Agreed. Looters exist in all invasion or occupation forces. And it is one of the darker realities of war. This was Wellington's main argument in response for war reparations request of the city comission of main representatives (without any success), due to the huge damage and human and material losses caused by the theoretically allied forces. Whose almost complete reconstruction over decades, incidentally, led to its very beautiful urban present configuration (“no hay mal que por bien no venga”).

@billder2655
@billder2655 3 ай бұрын
yeah but its also pretty tragic how the Spanish regular army stopped loads of its regiments fighting with Britain and Portugal for large sections of the conflict - the Guerrillas gave the British lots of crucial help with scouting and pathfinding, but the Regular Army and the Spanish government were very distrustful of Britain and the coalition, hence there aren't nearly as many Spanish troops at critical battles like Salamanca and Vitoria. Relations got a bit better after those victories (the Spanish government proclaim Wellington their saviour), but they sour again after Wellington sends 25,000 spanish troops home during the invasion of France for poor conduct towards civilians. Important to remember that Britain and Spain were at war just a few years prior, with the Spanish fleet getting trounced at Trafalgar - Britain were hardly going to turn around and embrace the nation that still remained one of their primary geopolitical threats, especially given the tensions between the two nations' commanders.

It was France and Russia that first attacked and invaded Germany in 1914. In Alsace-Lorraine and east Prussia, respectively. The Germans were stuck in the middle, as usual, and had to counter attack to break their encirclement, but failed in the French front because of the British involvement and, mainly, the incompetence of their armies supreme commander, Von Moltke (nephew).

That was the smartest thing to do, they were actually adviced from the British to do so. If the king stayed and got captured, Portugal would have surrendered, and probably the Spaniards wouldnt have revolted against the French later. The peninsular war would have been over in days. There are also some theories that the Portuguse Court had plans to Elevate Rio de Janeiro to the status of Capital decades before

It's called strategic withdrawal, even Napoleon himself praised the Portuguese king as the only one who managed to fool him. Funny how historians simply say he "ran away" when in order to move the entirety of the court and church and bank and literally the entire government structure it took many many months. Ofc we, the ones who stayed didn't like it one bit. But it was the right choice. Napoleon could have the territory, but would never claim victory because Portugal still had it's armies and navies. Which with the help of our allies the Brits, we could simply invade and reconquer. Not easy but it worked. I can respect that.

@@henriquefaustino8526 True, rumor is that the royal family thought the future was in the paradisaical place called Brazil. And it's independence was also a way of keeping Brasil out of Portugal's problems afterwards. Same royal lineage, 2 countries. But yeah the original idea was to maintain Brasil as part of the kingdom, rule the empire from Rio de Janeiro and eventually incorporate the other territories into it. Unfortunatelly the same people who did the french revolution started spreading their "new religion" and the rest is history.

As a Portuguese being from the area whose defence lines (look for "Linhas de Torres Vedras") defended by the Portuguese and the British (Wellington) stood up and defeated Junot, this is a far cry from accurate and deeply disrespectful towards every dead man and raped women (not even a counter for Portuguese casualties exist). To this day, the French cruelty is reminded from grandparents to grandsons in the most affected areas; every year, there are reenactments of the battles so no one forgets. Portugal, with Brits aid, had a big role in how the Napoleonic wars played out. Don't you forget that from 1807 to 1808, we were invaded by both Spanish and French in coalition. As Portugal and England have the longest alliance in the world still in place to this day we did not accept the embargo on British ships as demanded by Napoleon and decided to move the court, government and banking to Brazil, making Rio de Janeiro the Portuguese Empire capital, some say the king fled, but if you're smart enough you know you don't flee a whole government overnight, even Napoleon said King D. João VI was the only one who fooled him. On the other hand, the Brits would join Portugal and fight on Portuguese soil as was advantageous for them to take on the French. To me, Napoleon must be in hell, red hot impaled, right next to Hitler, Stalin and Mao...another spike waiting for Put-in.

At first the plan was to carve up Portugal for the benefit of the French and Spanish. But things turned sour between the Spanish and the French. By the way: the Portuguese got heavily involved in this war, 3 French generals (Junot, Masséna, Soult) failed to conquer the country (the 3 invasion attempts, which caused a lot of damage in the country), an entire division disappeared in the mountains, trapped by the local population. Lisbon was never taken. The regular Portuguese troops then participated in the fighting in Spain and even in French territory.

Portugal lost 10% of the inhabitants, and in this video the role of the Portuguese is shamefully underrated.

Some of the first major French military defeats were inflicted on the French army in Portugal. Spain was at that time an ally of France and participated militarily in the invasions of Portugal.

spain literally let france invade portugal and invaded with them, we helped retake madrid from the french, and you ask why we hate you? multiple attacks and it was almost always you invading us, portuguese want to stay in their corner of the world where we formed a country almost 1000 years ago, 400 before you did, and still you feel the greedy need to take advantage and attack us every chance you get. But portuguese people are not easily broken, and we wont ever submit to fools from a few broken kingdoms banded together. 1143 sempre caralho

My god… Napoleon may have been tough, but he clearly could not break the will of the Spaniards. They whooped his intellectually-gifted ass real good. Even entered France proper towards the end of it. I would vastly prefer to live under Napoleon if I was in Europe at the time, though. So I think it’s up for debate if rebelling, a pretty extreme move usually seen as a last resort, was actually in Spain’s best interest. Like, what would it take to get Napoleon to accept an offer to prevent such an uprising or stop it on the condition that a French-sympathizing ethnic Spanish ruler be put in charge of governance instead of a purely French ruler? Could he conceivably be reasoned with?

PORTUGAL NO CASUALTIES...That is the eternal problem of the "history" mainstream...Portugal who had first empire of Europe is every time forgot, Portugal is invisible to this people, so we did not lose a soldier lucky US NO? Portugal is many times included in Spain, all talked about Spain, but a small country like us only lost is empire as a all in 1974, and thank God we did lost at last, i almost was obliged to fight there in Africa, 4 more years of dictatorship and i was there fighting , to bad not sooner we lost all. But what i want to say is Portugal is for ever the forgotten one in the World history, so why our casualties must be included?? we are Spain to them. But other than this ( its big mistake) i find this work interesting, just.

So All the thousands of Portuguese forces that fought and died in this war are just a foot note? No matter turning the tide of the war in Portugal or helping to liberate Madrid. Oh I get it, Portugal is only almost 1000 years old, almost 400 years older than Spain, but they don't really exist, it's just fiction.

When france was pushing and almost looked like it was winning. That was when napoleon was there. When he left it's when it stalemated. That was a big flaw of france it was too dependent on napoleon to make decisions and thuse no one could do thing by themselves without constant approval or supervision
