Got a bit excited there, Jules-I thought you said ‘Penthouse’ for a second! Anyway, fascinating books. I’ve signed up as a Patreon member; it felt only fair to contribute, knowing how much time goes into these videos. Keep up the amazing work! Loving my books, though I’m still a long way off from having that bookshelf sorted

These are gorgeous 😍😍 I love the Coronation year book. All the colourful adverts are amazing how bright they still are

Indeed, these are time capsules of the very best that the worlf of printing had to offer each year. The Coronation one is spectacular.

These are the best, Jules! If Taschen and Chronicle Books had existed back then these are books they would have published! ❤

What wonderful books! I've never seen these, I don't blame you for wanting to collect them and keep them, despite the lack of space. We are also collectors so we know what you mean!

They are beautiful books, however just the six I have take up half a shelf!

13:51 what we are seeing here, I think, are four-color process versions of 19th century chromoliths. The point being that supposedly contemporary four-color printing can match the brilliance of the old chromoliths, which used a full color palette. In truth, the modern does not match the old in color, but they are still remarkable for using just four colors.

Absolutely, when you consider the time these were printed it's quite incredible.

Hi Jules, great video! I just purchased my first Penrose Annual 1907-08. I spent 26 years of my life in the printing industry, working within the pre-press process and have a qualification in Graphic Reproduction. I'm also an avid book lover and collector, so these Annuals are of great interest to me. Strangely I had never heard of them until seeing your videos - or maybe I paid them little attention at the time. I'm sure my employers would have had a collection of them in the day. Thanks again for the video.

Thanks my friend, I'm sure you will get even more out of them then I do. Thankfully, they do seem quite plentiful online but finding them in condition and at a decent price is the hard bit👍

@@JulesBurt Hi again, Jules. Today I really dived in to starting my collection of Penrose Annuals. Apart from buying 1907 and 1964 the other day, Today I discovered a local bookseller who is literally 30 mins away from me. He was offering "buy one, get one free" so I bought 14 editions, which pretty much cleaned him out. I ended up paying a very similar price to you at the book fair. I now have the entire 50's decade (1949-1960) and quite a few from the 60's. It brings my collection up to 16 in total. Oops, now I need to find self space.

I'm jealous! Well done, get ready for the space devouring monster that collecting these books are!

@@JulesBurt I have set up a bookshelf for these books on their own. Btw, I just picked up 1981 and 1982 (final edition)

The English Catalogue of Books has the 1912 annual as issued at 5/- which seems remarkable value for the content. Thanks for sharing. 😊

Thanks Simon! These are really great. Surprised at just how much content is in the earlier two volumes I have.

With the earliest editions is there any worry about toxic pigments like the arsenic in green and lead white?
@JulesBurtАй бұрын
Not that I'm aware of👍

You're a bad influence Jules. While in the process of watching this video I purchased two annuals including the 1954 annual

Oh no! Well at least you now know what's going to be inside them, filled with fascinating items, you'll love them🙂
