The judges were the late Joseph Wapner, the late Ed Koch, Jerry Sheindlin (Judge Judy's husband), and Marilyn Milian. The bailiffs were the late Rusty Burrell (Wapner), Josephine Ann Longobardi (Koch and Sheindlin), Davey Jones (was Milian's bailiff until 2001), and currently Douglas McIntosh.

I think Ireland started broadcasting The Peoples Court before Britain did (Around March or April). It was shown on RTE 2, usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday at 7.00pm. I think The Peoples Court only went to Britain in November 1982, when Channel 4 started, unless it was on ITV before this.

0:42 - Ralph Edwards and Lorimar-Telepictures put the amount of the case into a big pot then added some more money to that. If the plaintiff wins his case, he gets what he sued for and then goes halfsies on the rest with the defendant. If the defendant wins and doesn't have a counterclaim, then they both split the fund.

Hey, there! I'm actually looking for this particular episode! I was in the audience with a bunch of my friends in '87. You can see me in one of the stills during the end credits. I can be seen sitting behind the defendant. Any way of getting a copy of the full episode? This is blowing my mind. One of the friends with me is actually a very famous film maker now and he'd be blown away by this, too.

They sign an arbitration agreement to abide by the “judge” (arbiter’s) decision. Thus it is legally binding. But since both parties receive a fee and the penalty is deducted from the pot of money awarded by the producers, it’s a win-win situation for both parties, but especially for defendants who stand to lose several hundred dollars otherwise.
