What a wonderful way to start my week. Tony's control and melodic performance is riveting in this piece. I have not heard this recording before, thanks for bringing this up and your reactions. EDIT: One of the keyboard players on this looked familiar and I reran the video where you mentioned other players: it's Tom Grant! Tom grew up here in Portland, he is 7-8 years older than I am and was touring by the time I hit high school. Tom played all the jazz clubs here along with Ron Stein, Jeff Lorber, Leroy Vinegar, Mel Brown, and many more. So cool to see a local musician on this video playing a form so different than what he's known for. Thanks for making this connection for me.

Great video, can never get enough Tony! He really had an amazing combination of sophistication, power, precision., and creativity. Miles Smiles was the first album that got me into him and just blew my mind. His playing on Dolphy's Out to Lunch was another. Brian Blade has a great singing voice, and another incredible, inspiring drummer with seemingly limitless creativity. His combination of power and dynamics is really fantastic and he plays with so much joy.

Below is a list I've compiled based on that thought of drummers that sing or sung. I wanted to stay within the Jazz genre, but just couldn't. Not mentioning others seemed to make me feel as though to leave out the bigger picture. There are some real multi-talented musicians out there that needed to be named. The list is certainly not comprehensive. I'm sure you may think of more to add to the list. Check it out! 1 - Phil Collins kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3q5hnath7uIeLs 2 - Sammy Davis Jr. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4Tbp318m7CLqKc 3 - Karen Carpenter kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZWrqq19jaZ9hsk 4 - Maurice White: Maurice White was the drummer on upwards of nine Ramsey Lewis albums as a part of his band and trio. He was also one of the studio drummers at the famed Chess Records. 5 - Teddy Pendergrass 6 - Marvin Gaye: Gaye was actually playing drums with the Funk Brothers on sessions for Martha and the Vandellas, the Spinners, the Miracles, the Marvelettes, and even Stevie Wonder . Marvin was the drummer on Motown’s first No. 1 single on the pop charts, “Please Mr. Postman,” among others, though he remains uncredited on many. 7 - Bing Crosby: In The early 1920’s he studied law at Gonzaga University in Spokane but was more interested in playing the drums and singing with a local band. 8 - Jeffery Osborne 9 - Jason Derullo 10 - Justin Beiber 11 - Stevie Wonder (Spinners ;It’s A Shame, and others), see KZbin. 12 - Morris Day (The Time) 13 - Bruno Mars 14 - H.E.R. (Gabriella Wilson) 15 - Omar Hakim 16 - Chaka Khan 17 - Terry Lyne Carrington 18 - Buddy Miles 19 - Mel Torme 20 - Walter “Clyde” Orange (Commodores) 21 - Brandon Paak Anderson (Silk Sonic)

I can hear some ideas that Terry was inspired by from 3:50 to about 5:00. Especially, the part at 4:50, which he did on his chime cymbals, as an interlude, between ostinatos, in his first instructional video. I believe Tony is Terry's favorite drummer.

Beautiful. Never heard this full song. I’ve actually played parts of this solo for my grade school after school program. Particularly love that floor Tom kick combo. Drummers who sing -more in the rock world but: Levon Helm, Don Henley, Phill Collins, Ringo, and of course Karen Carpenter. I had the incredible, unbelievable privilege to play double drums with Tony Williams on stage at the Supper Club in NYC with my band Groove Collective. It was filmed for the Red Hot + Cool event. That night I played with Lester Bowie, Ramsey Lewis, Digable Planets, Last Poets, Don Cherry, Pharaoh Sanders, Carleen Anderson…too many others what a night. One of, if not the best night of my professional life (this was 1994). Unfortunately, Tony, was the only person who would not sign the video release so that part was never released. I was terrified and don’t think I even said two words to him. He came to rehearsal where he was in the same room with Ron Carter for the first time apparently in many years. And they didn’t acknowledge each other at all!!!! Me and my buddies wore out my vinyl of Believe It! When we were teens. It was one of those “be careful meeting your heroes” moments. In hindsight I just wished I had been the open uber fan I was. I was kind of at a peak moment in my life then and between thinking I was hot shit and being terrified and full of imposter syndrome. I blew it. He was a presence. He came into rehearsal in a fur coat smoking a big cigar with a ton of makeup on. The people setting it up only had one kit in the room. So I just watched (if I remember correctly) at the show he brought his like 20 piece bright yellow huge kit that was like half the stage. Anyway that’s my Tony story. My girlfriend at that time was supposed to be videoing for me and got about 15 seconds of really blurry footage that you could convince yourself was me and Tony Williams on stage playing together if you really use your imagination!! I have to find that. It actually sounds pretty good - probably better than hearing the whole thing!

Hey Quincy ! This definitely an extension of his previous work with John McLaughlin and Larry Young on the album Emergency back in 1969. That album was some sort of response to bands like The Soft Machine, stylistically, lyrically even, and he actually sang on that album too, in a way that was very reminiscent of Robert Wyatt (then DRUMMER and SINGER of the band). Allan Holdsworth was part of Soft Machine at some point, and around the same time he made the album Believe It with Tony Williams. Soft Machine themselves quoted a tune from Joe Farrell on which John McLaughlin played too which further proves it's actually a small circle of mutually influenced musicians. Anyway that's my little story.

Hey Dr Q, Ned from Spain back for more inspiration information. Tony was such an amazing force of music , a master of rhythm but I did not know he could sing too. Thanks for the spotlighting of his hand technique which, besides an insane amount of creativity and hard work, was the key to his playing so cleanly as if everything was a single stroke. Most of the singing drummers I know are in the rock world, but how about Kenwood Dennard ? I also wanted to mention my own experience being a singing drummer in a cover band for many years of how it improves independence and feel. Stay healthy and thanks for all the beautiful work.

His singing is improved a lot here compared to what he did on the albums Emergency and Turn It Over, even compared with the original recording of this tune on Ego. He's more confident and more on pitch. There's a video on KZbin of Johnny Vidacovich singing along while playing a second line rhythm. He also would recite some of his poetry while playing drums. Jack DeJohnette recites some lyrics while playing drums on the song "I Know". And when I saw him perform a few years ago he sang the Hendrix song "Castles Made of Sand" while drumming.

Wow this is very reminiscent of the George Duke, Billy Cobham Band from the mid-late 70's (with John Scofield and Alphonso Johnson). Tony sang with a lot of soul here. He reminds me of Alphonso only better actually. 😁 Tony would have fit right in with George. Too bad there was never that kind of collaboration. I've been singing behind the kit since before junior high school when I showed up to a gig with my brother one night (we did an organ duo for a few years) and he had a mic set up for me. I had been learning guitar and singing my favorite late 60s-early 70s songs to the radio. I set up my kit and moved the mic out of the way and my brother goes, "oh no, you're gonna back me up." I was quite freaked out since I had never sung harmony vocals before. He just said, "sing higher than me." LOL that's a very simplistic way to put it but I stumbled through and eventually learned how to sing the "third" part and later, in my professional career, I learned how to grab the "fifth" part either below the lead or above the third (in falsetto). I did sing lead in a few bands but I was never happy with the sound of my voice and over the last several decades I've stuck to singing high harmony. It's challenging since not only do you sometimes have to sing stuff that's rhythmically different from what you're playing but you have to be in sync with the lead singer's phrasing and melodic nuance. All the while you need to keep your ears open for blend not to mention, react musically on the kit at the same time. But when that stuff is on it's an incredible feeling! Keep doing these and please, don't stop commenting because of a few dolts. If they want to see the video without commentary they can search for it. It's not rocket science. There are a lot of reaction vids out there lately and they're great since they can sometimes point out things that might otherwise slip past. The Rick Beato "What Makes This Song Great" series was probably the beginning of these vids. You can get pretty deep inside a performance by looking through another's viewpoint.

By the way, the best version of There Comes A Time in my opinion is on the "Play or Die" album from 1980 with Tom Grant and Patrick O'Hearn. I picked up a perfect vinyl copy for £20 back in 2014. Recently it was going for £75 but has since been re-issued I believe. That album is interesting because it was recorded in Germany and has a new wave feel to it, unusual for Tony but it works. It was a small label, they called the song Lawra by mistake. Its on KZbin if you want to check it out.

Great video. However, heads up, back in 2007,I had to go to an acupuncturist for months to get rid of the trigger finger I got in my ring and pinky fingers (they stayed in the bent position unless serious work was done)..from trying the grip or fulcrum that Tony exemplifies here. There's a good chance there was a glitch in my mechanics and I wasn't doing something right, but that could happen to someone else as well, so I thought I would mention that.

Don’t listen to the haters buddy. You keep reacting over these videos. Keep doing what you’re doing! One thing I talk about is Tony’s heads! How did he not only get a good sound, but he made it part of his signature sound during this era. I don’t know anyone that could make black dots sound so sweet! Anyway, drummers that sing…I’ve heard QD sing a bunch. But let’s flip it, I’ve heard Mel Tormé play drums. And, if I flip it further I’ve heard Michael Brecker play drums too. 👍🏼FP

I know that Miles Davis HATED when Chet Baker sang, in addition to his Great Trumpet sound, but I think it really cinched the Melancholy Bluesy Vibe,in that Spectrum of Jazz. Love Tony's whole package of Percussion, and I think the Singing is Refreshing.....it fills in Space in the Vibe of the set or Session. Any way to experience more of a World Class Talent,I'm all for.

Hello Quincy, would like to impart vital information to you regarding who taught Tony Williams. My relationship with Tony spanned 67 to February 97. Met with Tony in Denver, Feburary 97 at the Bluebird Theater to give him my practice pad and reminisce and relate a message from his teacher Mr Chuck Brown in the bay area. Alan Dawson was not responsible for Tony's hand technique, The Tension Release Technique. My knowledge of this is first hand and can be verified by several of my constituents. Please let me know how you and i can speak regarding this . Best Regards Malcolm

as a drummer and lrycist myself his lryics make me feel that he is saying that he loves this person ( or humankind maybe ? ) more than what the latest trends were and more than what most people define as love , more than what was going on in the world and deeper still he could've been talking about the Lord our God .

First heard TW on Miles In The Sky…later Lifetime , Ego, then I heard Bums Rush and thought it was someone else. He abandoned the small 4 piece kit and used low dead pop tuning. I always though his post miles experience was something he couldn’t get a handle on. Billy Cobham became popular, You can see those Tony groups on some of those gigs….,his singing, group with Tequila, Larry Young, I think the record labels couldn’t give him anything. I think he gave up to soon with his original efforts. Then he went with the traditional quartet, which he had success with…..but, his Holdsworth 4/4 rock grooves, Etc…was totally unique…..hence, I think he became tired of trying to commercial with it……he was great, I also think he abandoned the 4 piece kit to soon…..but then again, he reinvented his sound on the big Gretsch-black dots…….

Karen Carpenter and Don Henley are the only ones I know who play drums and sing, but now Tony is at a higher level because it's Jazz. my drink is a slices of ginger a clove of garlic boiled together and then a squeeze of lemon while I bath in the morning sun naked, and it keeps me in good mood the whole day.

@@mikekelly9851 There are certainly no jazz laws but I guess I was more comparing the tunings in this video to his drums on his early recordings. Listen to anything from the early to mid 60s. Here's a link to Nefertiti where you can clearly hear his drums are tuned much higher, with coated heads.
