Sandow was definitely a great athlete, but lacked integrity, foreshadowing some figures in modern day. His claim to be the "Strongest Man in the World" was so important to him either emotionally or for marketing purposes that he sued Arthur Saxon for claiming (truthfully) that he beat him at the Bent Press. He was already well established at the time and could have congratulated the newer strongman on surpassing him, but he chose to surpress his defeat. Very unsportsmanlike. And of course he never answered Louis Cyr's challenges, which is a real shame because that would have been a legendary contest! Cyr was undoubtedly much stronger in a more limited sense, but Sandow was much more athletic and versatile, so either way it went, it would have been an awesome show! But Sandow was unwilling to compete with a man he might not be able to beat, which shows he didn't really love the iron game itself, just the personal glory and wealth it could bring him. His contemporaries all mocked the light dumbell system, saying the reason for the light dumbells was that he would sell more programs that way than if his program required more serious weights not that it actually worked. Again, foreshadowing the use of a shredded physique to sell ineffective programs for tons of cash. But he legitimately inspired a lot of people and proved that a lean healthy physique could be very strong, helping to diminish the trend of obese strongmen, a very positive thing. All in all a complicated legacy

@@anysimmers8702 I think in terms of natural strength Cyr was beaten overall by Goerner. He was probably better at pure pressing power, but Goerner was so very versatile, and had a ton of brute strength as well.

The best thing about Sandow is he proves that hard work is all that’s needed to build a good physique. There is this trend today about everything being “optimal”. Eugene was able to build a phenomenal physique with only a set of light dumbbells and very little knowledge of training or nutrition.

To be fair though, Sandow’s training was probably still better than most Steroid user’s way of training.

I'm not a homophobe (i don't care what people do in their bedroom) but bisexual rumours from the 1950s don't mean much... Especially if they are about a guy who had "nice biceps bro!" as part of his vocabulary. Probably just a misunderstanding by some gym guys who thought he was hitting on them. Just a thought lol.

My physique goals are actually shifting to be more like Sandows. I'm not a huge fan of having a big chest , and his quad size to me is perfectly fine. His delts , arms, and back are awesome, and he has a really balanced core (albeit I would focus on obliques more than his look). In a couple photos of him it also shows he is posterior dominant in the lower body too (which is my preference). He's also almost the same exact height!

These Legends of The Past episodes are great! A few years ago, I became borderline obsessed with researching these old time strongmen and their methods. I even tried the light dumbbell system but couldn't stick to it. That particular training method is steeped in it's own lore and is just as fascinating as the strongmen who would use it. There are so many awesome characters from the bronze era of bodybuilding. It's a shame that some of them become forgotten or never got the publicity when they were alive. Maxick and Bobby Pandour are two of the most interesting names in my opinion.

I would like to add something to the lion story. I don’t know if what happened is truth or a myth; but it remarkably resembles an episode from Don Quixote. Don Quixote also challenged the lion to prove that he is a good knight and the lion was too lazy to fight him and didn’t engage. When I read it as a kid I thought the scene was comical. When I read it last year I realized that this is how author showed us that Don Quixote obtained supernatural power when challenged the beast and his spirit was strong and brave enough to peace the lion.
