I’ve been painting for 36 years and gotta say bottom to top is the way to go. When you go bottom to top you see your overlap way better than top to bottom cause top to bottom you will lose your pattern by the cup somewhat . Meaning less likely to run and get a better even pattern overlap

Bottom to top has helped me so much on doors when painting in my at home booth. I lack lighting and it has been a task trying to find my wet edge from top to bottom. This is the truth.

I've been painting on cars ..and industrial stuff for over 30 years..I was aviation certified for Bell helicopter ..Boeing and Bombardier..I also done powder coating for about 4 years ..I mostly used Devilbiss guns and for the past 8 been using a teknaprolite ..don't like it ..but couldn't afford better until recently when I bought a Sata x5500..but im restoring a 67 plymouth gtx and saving the new gun for it . I have been following you for a while now and you seem to have the same style as o do paint from bottom ..heavy on clear ..high pressures ..but man you can paint ..im having troubles with paint match and cloudiness in silvers ..but our v.o.c crap is different here in Canada ..that coupled with my old gun and getting older ..now 51..eye sight diminishing and painting in an old garage are not helping ..keep your videos coming ..im learning a lot ..you are awesome 👌 👏

Im in Canada aswell...I use a Tekna Prolite every day! What do you mean by cloudiness? Try tightening up your overlap and drop coat/orientation coat is important. This will get your metallics to layout properly. On the Prolite i spray coverage coats at 20psi and about 17psi for drop coat. Thats with a 1.3 tip and i believe im running the TE20 air cap.

I think spraying bottom to top is easier to see the dry line because you're eyes are looking down on the spray. If I'm painting the whole car on the last coat I would finish on top to minimize the overspray from the sides. I thinking of doing an extra last coat just on top because I like to start from the top and there is less chance of a run on the horizontal surfaces.

I love my Bellaria, had it for about 8 years. I just painted Mazda Soul Red Crystal 46V on my sons Subaru GC8, it did the black wet on wet primer, ground, mid coat and HS clear all through a 1.3 tip absolutely perfectly. I think the newer gun you are using is a bit lighter and saves a little bit of materials and uses a bit more air. I'll probably keep using what I've got but might get another Iwata if I need a second gun. Love the Bellaria though..

I was lucky to pick up two Bellarias second hand from two different pawn shops. One clean and the other caked in candy and glitter, but cleaned up perfectly. I also picked up a Kiwami but it's a siphon feed gun. I couldn't find much info on it but assumed as it was physically smaller that it was going to be a smaller fan and a slower gun. Perhaps better for stuff like motor cycles, bikes and odd jobs where you don't want to smash on the paint. Haven't used it yet as I'm not up to that point in the project but might have to find something else to paint just to have a play with it!

Hey Brian, awesome video. I think you really explained and showed the vital points very well. I have to agree with you, I've been doing this job since sep 2010, and I love it. When I paint, I like to start from the top, simply because I'm already standing up most of the time. But to be honest, I never saw any difference in starting positions. What does make sense, and I know you mentioned it before, but I think you could emphasise even more, is starting from away of your filters, moving towards them. Even if you are doing some DIY, without any filters, or real ventilation. Open a door or window, move from furthest to closest. You have to let some ventilation in though, let the fumes get out. Having the biggest fan is really worth it, so be wise, follow Brians advise. Invest in your tools. Paying "a lot" once is usually cheaper than paying "less over and over". A question back at you Brian: In Germany, we are really car crazy. We like our rides to look good. So painting ANY edges is vital. Colour and clear. I paint edges from 3 sides basically - front, edge, back. I never really see you emphasise that too much, how do you handle that with like a dismounted front bumper, or a round fender edge ?

Actually, there's quite a bit of FLG5 videos from various users. It's probably a more versatile gun than others in its class, but I can tell you now that its best application tip size is 1.4 vs 1.3. The fan is wider with the 1.4 and lower pressure is needed to wet the panel.

I would be way more interested in the air supply side of things.. the gun at the end is just the tail of the big dog that is upfront, especially for DIY'ers. Dry+clean air at high volume for a pro/amateur gun in the HVHP/HVLP range is hard to achieve for someone who doesn't have a professional booth to spray in.. Personally I live in the Tropics, so dry air at high volume is especially hard to come by for me here.

The Kiwami4 chews through more paint than the FLG5. Atomization is very close with the Iwata nudging it slightly. Keep in mind the FLG5 was designed to run at 35 psi, though most don't use it at that pressure.

@@PaintSociety Thank you for the clarification. I'm having trouble to adapt to the technique I mentioned. I do see it possibly being beneficial spraying primer or blending within a panel for small repairs and save on material and to keep it as small as possible. I'm glad you mention it's more of a preference thing rather than right or wrong. 🙌
@MrDuLukes
@MrDuLukes 2 жыл бұрын
@@fvalle90 Basically there's 3 techniques: Carefully let go of the trigger, as you described, so you get: paint, air, paint, air... Turn your wrist out. So you never let go of the trigger, just turn your wrist to the right or left. Do a combination of the above. In my opinion, I have to agree with Brian, it's pure preference. Try out the techniques if you like, see what feels best, and what gives you the best results. Try out with "easier colours" like black or white, and work towards silver and 3-coats.

Depends if your garage is cold or if humidity levels are high... Im assuming your using solvent base coat? I spray in both conditions, except at work we use waterborne paint. I wouldnt recomend that outside of a booth... Give yourself 10-12 mins flash time between coats. If you think your garage is a bit on the cool side, do a 15 min flash. The booth is just a more controlled environment compared to a garage.

Hi Brian, I noticed you didn't mix any clear base with the black before the orientation coat? so all you do for the orientation coat is what? drop the pressure a bit and be further away? doesn't that mean it will land dry? Thank you. Bob

how come I can't get a good spray pattern with my basecoat? It's split unless I really lower the pressure. The manual says that 29 psi is best. I think my clear coat spray patterns were okay. Maybe I'll use my finishline for base and kiwami4 for clear. Manual says either the pressure is too high or the paint is to viscous. It's cheap restoration shop brand paint that's mixed 2:1 with reducer

Where do you purchase guns and the cups and adapter from? After watching your vids I believe I can do this.

I have really been considering a kiwami4 1.8mm or a wider4 1.8mm for a primer gun. I have the dv1 clear and dv1 base as well as dv1s for cerakote and was using a devilbiss flg 1.8mm for primer but i simply do not like how it sprays high build. I feel the kiwami or wider will do much better for me

I would get the wider4. The wider4 has a different air cap for the 1.8. The kiwami4 has the same air cap as the smaller nozzles and its not great for spraying high build primer
